hard to create in schools?
Schools change
from the inside out
The TYRANNY of
the urgent makes
CHANGE incredibly
difficult in schools.

“Responsible to the element, accountable to the
mission.”
• Responsibility is about trust, reliability, and dependability.
• Accountability is about loyalty, commitment, and not
letting each other down.
• For true teamwork to take place, be responsible to
yourself and accountable to others.
As to why we ignore the merits
of those who disagree with us,
we do it because it’s easy to
distance ourselves from “the
other.” It takes enormous
courage to consider different
different views to our own, but
it’s from here that real progress
and growth can begin to turn
everyone’s fortunes around
around for the better and greater
good.

BCD Behavior is the single most destructive behavior in
schools
Personal accountability fuels teams and fuels success
EXAMPLE
• BLAME – I did not pass because nobody else on my team can shoot the
ball
• COMPLAIN – It is unfair that I get blamed (for shooting too much) when
they never take the time to work on their game
• DEFEND – Besides, their smallest defender was on me and I had a great
look.
EXAMPLE
• BLAME – The kids do not take the test seriously.
• COMPLAIN – I wish the state would realize how ridiculous it is to mandate
HS students take a standardized assessment
• DEFEND – And I know what I did for those kids this year and that test just
does not measure it

  • 9. MISSION 2029 What should school look like in 2029 to best serve kids?
  • 10. So, if we know it should look different why is change so hard to create in schools?

  • 14. The TYRANNY of the urgent makes CHANGE incredibly difficult in schools.

  • 16. What is the best team you have ever been a part of? Why was it so effective?
  • 17. “Responsible to the element, accountable to the mission.” • Responsibility is about trust, reliability, and dependability. • Accountability is about loyalty, commitment, and not letting each other down. • For true teamwork to take place, be responsible to yourself and accountable to others.

As to why we ignore the merits of those who disagree with us, we do it because it’s easy to distance ourselves from “the other.” It takes enormous courage to consider different different views to our own, but it’s from here that real progress and growth can begin to turn everyone’s fortunes around around for the better and greater good.

  • 28. EXAMPLE • BLAME – I did not pass because nobody else on my team can shoot the ball • COMPLAIN – It is unfair that I get blamed (for shooting too much) when they never take the time to work on their game • DEFEND – Besides, their smallest defender was on me and I had a great look.
  • 29. EXAMPLE • BLAME – The kids do not take the test seriously. • COMPLAIN – I wish the state would realize how ridiculous it is to mandate HS students take a standardized assessment • DEFEND – And I know what I did for those kids this year and that test just does not measure it
  • 30. TRUTH #2 The key to most everything in school’s is a deep understanding of Maslow Empathy drives everything
  • 31. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs PHYSIOLOGICAL OR SURVIVAL NEEDS SAFETY NEEDS LOVE, AFFECTION, AND BELONGINGNESS NEEDS ESTEEM NEEDS SELF- ACTUALIZATION

  • 33. TRUTH #3 We would never, ever invent school to look this way Progress is dependent upon EVERYONE realizing their realizing their brilliance and taking the chance to lead chance to lead change

I once ate the exact same dinner for 21 straight days I prefer to brush my teeth in the shower I use the same hair gel I used in high school despite being able to afford and realizing that other products are clearly superior I change up my work out routines but always find myself returning to one that my HS basketball coach wrote for me twenty years ago I like to sleep on the left side of the bed I like to park on the right side of the garage I have to sit facing the exit in restaurants I once totaled a car and could afford a much nicer car and I bought the EXACT same car again . . . that was three months ago

I have come to this realization after attending just about every conference in the world, reading an intense amount of books, visiting lots of schools, and hearing the very best speakers in the world. Schools change from the inside out. Students, teachers, and principals change schools. District offices, state agencies, and the Feds can ONLY create conditions for change if they are really going to take root. And – the most important driver of change in schools is undoubtedly the teachers. That is a lot of pressure. But really, it is the only way this tide is going to turn . . . . Disrupting the status quo is about micro-decision after micro-decision finding problems and finding solutions to problems.
  4. So – Mr. Motivational Speaker – where do we start? I am glad you asked. I think that in order to move forward we must be very intentional about what our truths are. And when I talk about truths – I mean facts PLUS. I am thinking about the things that inarguably or disproportionately impact our school systems in the current state. And how we either BATTLE that or LEVERAGE that in order to create a better holistic product.
