This document outlines a presentation about supporting farmers and farmer organizations through agritourism in Papua New Guinea. It discusses how agritourism can benefit farmers by providing new market opportunities and improving the local economy. It identifies the key actors in the agricultural supply chain, including smallholder farmers, farmer organizations, traders, hotels and restaurants. It stresses that farmers lack production skills and the ability to meet market demands consistently. Reaching a $billion in 2013 in the US, agritourism offers farmers a revenue stream that helps them stay on the farm and grow their customers base. Since 2014, CTA, PIPSO and key partners in the Pacific region have been highlighting the potential of tourism markets for local farmers and other value chain actors. A special focus is put into strengthening agritourism at the 1st Pacific Week of Agriculture organised by Vanuatu on 16-20th October 2017. A focused agritourism workshop to share lessons learned and take stock on progress made in serving tourism markets in selected countries to be held on 18th October (14:00-17:30).
A chefs training session. As part of joint SPTO/PIPSO/CTA efforts to promote food tourism in the Pacific region, support Pacific cuisine branding and enhance local chef’s skills in sourcing locally, we will also organise a two day chefs training on 19-20th October 2017.

Country Status Reports on Underutilized Crops, by Kailash Pradhan, Bhutan - Regional Expert Consultation on Underutilized Crops for Food and Nutritional Security in Asia and the Pacific November 13-15, 2017, Bangkok
While small scale family farmers grow food, and produce 70% of the food in this region, we remain to be poorest, hungriest, mostmalnourished? Why ? First because many of us do not have adequate access , control or ownership of the basic natural resources needed to do farming: land, waters, forests, seeds. Without land rights, we cannot decide what to plant, when to plant, where to market the produce, and in many cases, get only a 30% share of the produce of the farm. Without water rights, the fishes we could have captured in our seas and waters are first captured by big commercial trawlers, leaving so little for the many of us who would like to fish. Without forestry rights, we lose our forests to big mining and logging companies. Without rights to breed, conserve, save and exchange seeds, we will be dependent on the seeds of big and multi-national seed companies..
Second, our yields are low, of inferior quality, and we do not have the money to buy necessary inputs such as seeds, fertilizers or even farm tools or put up needed services such as irrigation, electricity.

3. CONTEXT AND BENEFITS
• Agriculture is the economic backbone of PNG, supporting over 85% of the
population and accounting for 25% of PNG’s GDP.
• Most of these farmers are smallholders and live in the rural settings. How do
we get them to become active players in the development of this country?
• Agritourism is a vehicle that has the potential to provide a number of
benefits to the farmers and many other players in the tourism industry.
4. AGRITOURISM BENEFITS FARMERS
• Increased market opportunities for local farmers. Hotels and restaurants
have a constant demand for a wide variety of fresh produce.
• Easier access to fresh, locally grown products for local hotels and
restaurants.
• Improved local economy as a result of tourist expenditures on farm/food
activities
• Promotion of our traditional culture, particularly in its culinary dimension
• Decreased in the import bill for foreign commodities
5. UNDERSTANDINGTHE KEY ACTORS…. SUPPLY AND

Demand-side actors
• There are different types of actors to consider on the demand side:
• Hotels and restaurants: Their biggest challenge is suppliers’ ability to meet their
requirements.
• Chefs: In most hotels and restaurant, chefs are responsible for designing menus.Their
biggest challenges is around:
• The knowledge of locally produced fruits and vegetables and how to innovate with
them
• The knowledge of local traditional dishes and how to prepare them
• Tourism sector in general:The tourism sector in general focuses its marketing on
accommodation and activities, but rarely on food.
6. Supply-side actors
• The supply side is mostly smallholder farmers, traders, wholesalers and
agriculture organisations (FPDA).
• Smallholder Farmers: Farmers’ main challenge is to produce consistently quantity and
quality products. Most farmers are unable to meet market requirements.
• Farmer Organisations: Farmer organisations key challenge is engaging with
smallholders who have the “art of farming” but lack the “science and economics of
farming”.
• Traders and wholesalers:These are actors that are closest to the demand-side
actors, providing/supplying food crops..
