OBJECTIVE:
Learn how to form plural nouns in a
simple way using the basic rules.
To make regular nouns plural just need to add –S to
the end of the Word.
Example:
Car cars
Singular Plural
Car Cars
Cat Cats
House Houses
When the noun ends in S, SH, CH, X or Z, we add -ES to the
noun.
*Sometimes with words that end in –S or –Z require that you double the -s or -z prior to adding the
-es for pluralization.
Example:
Watch watches
Singular Plural
Watch Watches
Box Boxes
Quiz Quizzes
If the noun ends in F or FE, we remove the F/FE and add -VES to the
noun.
Some exceptions: roof - roofs, cliff - cliffs, chief - chiefs, belief - beliefs, chef -
chefs
Example:
Singular Plural
Wolf Wolves
Leaf Leaves
Life Lives
leaf leaves
When the noun ends in a CONSONANT + O, we normally add -
ES to the noun.
Example:
Singular Plural
Tomato tomatoes
Echo Echoes
Hero Heroes
Potato potatoes
Tomato Tomatoes
When the noun ends in a VOWEL + Y, we add -S to the noun.
Examples:
Singular Plural
Boy Boys
Holiday Holidays
Key Keys
Guy Guys
key keys
There are many nouns that don't follow these rules. They are called
irregular nouns and you need to learn them individually because they don't
normally have an S on the end.
Example:
Singular Plural
man men
woman women
child children
foot feet
tooth teeth
goose geese
mouse mice
mouse mice
Some other nouns in English are the same in the singular and the
pluralform.
Example:
Singular Plural
Fish Fish
Sheep Sheep
Deer Deer
Moose Moose
Aircraft Aircraf
Fihs Fish
