O.I.S.T
An Operating System(O.S.) is Software that manages
computer hardware and software resources and
provides common services for computer programs.
The Operating System is an essential component of
system software .
Application programs usually require an operating system
to function.
For hardware functions such as input and output and
memory allocation, it act as intermediate between
program and computer hardware.
The codes are executed directly by hardware and
will frequently make a SYSTEM CALL to an
operating system to be interrupted by it.
Operating systems can be found in almost every
devices form- Cellular phones to Video games
consoles to super computers and many more.
There’s nothing wrong in saying that no device can
work without an operating system.
Examples :- Microsoft Windows, MacOS , Android,
iOS , Linux , UNIX , etc.
 The operating system (OS) is the program which starts
up when you turn on your computer and runs
underneath all other programs - without it nothing would
happen at all.
 In simple terms, an operating system is a manager. It
manages all the available resources on a computer, from
the CPU, to memory, to hard disk accesses.
 Tasks the operating system must perform:
◦ Control Hardware
◦ Run Applications
◦ Manage Data and Files
◦ Security
Real Time:- It is a MULTITASKING operating System that
aims execution of real-time applications. They use
scheduling algorithm to achieve deterministic behavior.
They provide quick and predictable response to events.
A event-driven system switches between tasks based on
PRIORITIES.
MULTI-USER:-- A Operating system allow multiple
users to access a computer system at same time.
TIME SHARING system and internet servers can be
classified as Multi-user access to a computer
through the sharing of time.
Time Sharing: Time sharing operating system
schedule tasks for efficient use of the system and
may also include accounting software for cost
allocation of processor time, mass storage,
printing, and other resources.
MULTI-Tasking:- A operating system allows more
than one program to run at same time. A single –
tasking system has only one running program
Multi-tasking can be of two types
i) Pre-emptive
ii) Co-operative
 The PlayStation 3 system software is the
updatable firmware and operating system of the PlayStation 3.
 The process of updating is almost identical to that of
the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation 4.
The software may be updated by downloading the update
directly on the PlayStation 3, downloading it from the user's
local Official PlayStation website to a PC and using a USB
storage device to transfer it to the PlayStation 3, or installing
the update from game discs containing update data.
 The native operating system of the PlayStation 3 is CellOS,
which is a branch from the FreeBSD project. The 3D computer
graphics API software used in the PlayStation 3
is LibGCM and PSGL, based on OpenGL ES and Nvidia's
Cg. The PlayStation 3 uses the XrossMediaBar (XMB) as
its graphical user interface.
 The initial slim PS3s SKU shipped with a unique firmware with
new features, also seen in software 3.00.
 The current version of the software, 4.60, was made available
on June 24, 2014.
 Company/Developers :- Sony Computer
Entertainment

Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs)
 When you logon locally, you are presented with graphical
environment.
 You start at a graphical login screen. You must enter your
username and password. You also the have the option to
choose from a couple session types. Mainly you have the
choice between Gnome and KDE.
 Once you enter in your username and password, you are then
presented with a graphical environment that looks like one of
the following...
×-This command is directly linked to the hardware
to execute operations.
∆ - This command is another hardware command
to reverse the action or used as an “UNDO”
 - This command is use to save an on going
operation related to hardware.
