Mission-Critical Connectivity for Svitzer’s Global FleetWestbase.io
With 4000 employees, a fleet of 430 vessels and
operations all over the world, Svitzer is recognised as the global market leader within towage and emergency response.
Managing a fleet of 430 vessels that are distributed globally and exposed to extreme weather conditions and challenging operations is no mean feat. Communications with these vessels is not straightforward either, as every country has a different implementation of 4G LTE / 3G networks and ship-to-shore WiFi.
Find out how a solution from Westbase.io enabled Svitzer to standardise communications across the fleet, equipping personnel with the technology needed to operate effectively and safely.
The Importance of Cloud Management for NetworksWestbase.io
Westbase Technology has long championed the benefits of cloud management for networking solutions. From helping organisations to streamline their operational costs to speeding time to deployment, the positives are many and varied. In this help guide we will explore these, as well as negate some of the arguments against cloud management.
The expansion and adoption of new business technologies has brought enterprise networking to a tipping point. The network edge is becoming more distributed than ever before, and application requirements are becoming more complicated.
Growth of WiFi in enterprises has been driven by an increased use of mobile devices and BYOD trends, as well as a surge in technological advancements such as the Internet of Things which demand more flexible connectivity than wired alone can offer. This, combined with consumer pressure for public WiFi hotspots, means that wireless LAN connectivity has become a standard expectation on across the board.
Infographic: Innovating Energy and UtilitiesWestbase.io
The energy and utilities landscape is constantly changing and creating new challenges as a result. Adapting to these changes, as well as an overarching need to drive greater efficiencies, means that companies are employing new and improved technology to assist their transformation. The Internet of Things is sitting at the forefront of this, and is growing rapidly in the industry. This new infographic from Westbase Technology looks at these utility and energy industry challenges, and the resultant growth of the Internet of Things.
68% of utility executives said that they would invest in IT services, with 58% saying they would specifically invest in the Internet of Things (Itron Resourcefulness Index).
IDC predicts that there will be a $201 Billion worldwide revenue opportunity presented by the Internet of Things (IoT) for the utilities industry by 2018.
Vodafone M2M Barometer reported that M2M technology adoption is higher in the energy and utilities sector than any other.
Networking Technology 101: A Glossary of TermsWestbase.io
We know that networking technology acronyms and industry terms can be a headache, so Westbase Technology has put together this guide to help you work your way around them.
In order to improve employee safety and better protect assets, security solutions are becoming more intelligent and expanding beyond traditional static applications. With this, connectivity has become an essential requirement which demands more flexibility than fixed line alone can deliver. A 3G/4G networking solution however, can connect security applications in any location with ease.
Solutions Overview for Public TransportWestbase.io
Public transport organisations are rapidly expanding their on-the-road technology in order to deliver improved efficiencies and to expand customer service capabilities. From passenger WiFi, to improved scheduling notifications, connectivity is a key enabler of this. Offering simple installation and integration with existing network infrastructure, 3G/4G solutions can deliver superfast, reliable and secure connectivity anywhere – a perfect solution for mobile applications.
To drive customer service excellence, while ensuring high levels of security and compliance, banking organisations are investing in new technologies such as extended ATM networks and in-branch digital banking. With this, the edge of the network is becoming more highly distributed and therefore requires more flexible connectivity – for which 3G/4G mobile networking solutions provide a solution.
The expansion of technologies helping retailers to be more efficient and sales effective – from the warehouse to the shop floor – is exponentially increasing the need for a secure and highly available network. Connectivity to the retail outlet is also crucial to omni-channel strategies being fully embraced by the retail industry. 3G/4G networking solutions deliver highly flexible connectivity to power these applications and relieve the reliance on fixed lines.
INFOGRAPHIC: The Importance of Retail Failover and OOBMWestbase.io
Retail IT teams are under increasing pressure to build and maintain a flexible, scalable network which can support the latest retail technologies – at the core of which is a reliable, secure and superfast connectivity solution. In this infographic, Westbase takes a look at the real cost of downtime and the importance of retail failover and Out-Of-Band Management to minimising this.
By 2020 M2M is projected to become a global industry worth almost $950 billion, its clear from this projection and the explosion of the IoT that more and more businesses are talking advantage of the opportunities from fixed and mobile network connected solutions – ‘The Rise of the Internet of Things’. http://bit.ly/1h2VnAW

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
