This document defines plant tissues and describes the two main types: meristematic and permanent tissues. Meristematic tissues are undifferentiated and actively divide through mitosis in roots and stems to produce new cells. Permanent tissues arise from cell differentiation and include epidermis, collenchyma, parenchyma, chlorenchyma, sclerenchyma, xylem and phloem, each with a distinct structure and function like protection, support, food storage, photosynthesis, and transport of water, minerals and food throughout the plant.
