2. Joseph Pitton de Tournefort
(1656 -1708)
• Known as father of genus concept.
• He studied under Pierre Magnol in
the University of Montpellier later
became the professor of botany at
Jardin du Roy in Paris and later ,
Director of Jardin des Plantes in
Paris.
3. MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS
• He published Elements de botanique in 1694 ,
including 698 genera and 10,146 species.
• He was the first to give names and description of
genra.
• His system of classification was useful for
identification , recognizing petaliferous and
apetalous flowers , free and fused petals , and
regular and irregular flowers.
4. Carlous Linnaeus
(1707-1778)
• Known as father of
taxonomy.
• Born in Rashult, Sweden on
23 May 1707 .
• He enter the university of
Lund in 1727 to learn
medicine
5. CONTRIBUTIONS
• Three universally known works of Linnaeus are;
Systema Naturae published in 1735 which contains
the outline of his system of classification.
Genera Plantarum published in 1737 that contains
the description of seven genera.
Species Plantarum published in 1735 in 2 volumes
which contains his detailed view on plant
identification and description of species.
6. • In recognition of his contributions , Linnaeus
was made knight of the polar star in 1753.
• He gave the first sexual system of classification
in his Species Plantaraum , on the basis of no.
of stamen .
• In 1761 he was granted the patent of nobility.
