Pathogens can be classified into three categories: biotic pathogens which are living organisms like fungi, nematodes and protists that infect plants; abiotic pathogens which are non-living factors like drought or frost; and mesobiotic pathogens which are non-cellular infectious entities like viruses and viroids.
