2. What approaches can teachers take when they find a
wide range of levels in their classes?
One approach: “teach to the middle”.
Another one: plan different activities for different levels.
BEST OPTION: to adapt activities so that all learners are
included. Examples: Dictations, Reading, Dialogues..

3. Dictations: listening,
understanding, spelling,
punctuation all come into
play.
Weaker learners can write
either the complete text or
just the key vocabulary.

4. Reading

answer questions
◦ Weaker learners: write
possible answers on the
board or True or False
statements
◦ Before reading:
◦ Prepare students before
any reading activity.
◦ Discuss title,
illustrations, and pre-
teach unfamiliar
vocabulary.

5. Dialogues
• Write a dialogue on
the board.
• Read one part and ask
the whole class to say
the other.
• Ask the class to
practice the dialogues
in pairs, and write their
own version of it.
• Make a role-play.

6. Plan open-ended tasks
• They have several or many right answers (they allow for
creativity and imagination).
Some open-ended tasks:
• Read the first half of a story and then write the ending.
• Imagine a place and write about the people and animals that
live there.
• Think of a famous person and write a report.

7. Games and Competitions
• Can be motivating for Young learners
of all levels.
Example:
Students work in pairs and write as
many present continuous or there
is/there are sentences about a picture
within a time limit (learners are
motivated to write the most sentences).

8. Variety of
activities and
pace
• “Heads up” and “heads down”
activities.
• Short, fast activities as well as
longer tasks.
• Group and pair work as well as
individual work.

9. Make the most
of visuals
All learners can
benefit from visual
input, but especially
the weaker ones.
• Introduce new vocabulary with
flashcards, posters or images.
• Watch clips to introduce new topics.
• Picture dictionaries available in class.
• Provide learners with visual models of
activities.

10. Conclusion
• All classes are almost mixed-level.
• Planning of activities is always part of a teacher’s job.
• Many course books have ideas, worksheets and
reinforcement activities for weaker learners.
• It is important to observe and talk to our students
• Finding out about student’s interests, preferences for
activities…etc. help us plan classes that cater for
different needs.
