You are world renown anthropologist, Gabriella Matachia. You have beeen given an enormous grant to study popular culture and fandom culture
in depth. Unfortunately, you spent all of you money on buying up special coins to complete your coin collection. Now you only have a week and
must prepare introductory remarks to the Antiquarian Society about contemporary American fan culture. You've found two articles to read (your
self-selected articles this week) and some other materials, but you really feel you should focus on something you have directly examined.
For this report, you should (if possible) witness a fandom and report on what you have found. You can do this in several ways:
Attend a fan-based event (go to a sports games, go to a bar on a night of a major game, go to a convention, visit a comic book store, observe
teens at the mall, etc)
Visit a portal online that is focused on a particular fandom and examine the interactions and ways people present their identity in that arena
(Portals in this sense mean: websites, discussions, spaces in virtual environments such as Second Life, gaming environments, etc).
Watch videos of conventions, sporting events, or other fan-based culture that have been captured and posted on places like Youtube.
In your report explain a bit about what fandom you explored, where you explored it, and how the readings you did relate or help you make sense
of what you witnessed. Remember as an anthropologist, you are studying meaning and connection. You want to examine how and why people
make these connections with their popular culture but avoid negatively judging the participants.
Replies: Though you can provide substantial replies in whatever format you choose, I would encourage the following approach:
· Reply as something that is a fandom that the original post describes and further elaborate or repectfully challenge the assumes and
representations made.
· Reply as someone in the Antiquarian Society who would like clarification or ask additional meaningful questions (based upon the articles
that you read).
· Reply as Gabriella Matachi 's with some last minute additional commentary that she forgot to bring to the meeting.

  • 12. You are world renown anthropologist, Gabriella Matachia. You have beeen given an enormous grant to study popular culture and fandom culture in depth. Unfortunately, you spent all of you money on buying up special coins to complete your coin collection. Now you only have a week and must prepare introductory remarks to the Antiquarian Society about contemporary American fan culture. You've found two articles to read (your self-selected articles this week) and some other materials, but you really feel you should focus on something you have directly examined. For this report, you should (if possible) witness a fandom and report on what you have found. You can do this in several ways: Attend a fan-based event (go to a sports games, go to a bar on a night of a major game, go to a convention, visit a comic book store, observe teens at the mall, etc) Visit a portal online that is focused on a particular fandom and examine the interactions and ways people present their identity in that arena (Portals in this sense mean: websites, discussions, spaces in virtual environments such as Second Life, gaming environments, etc). Watch videos of conventions, sporting events, or other fan-based culture that have been captured and posted on places like Youtube. In your report explain a bit about what fandom you explored, where you explored it, and how the readings you did relate or help you make sense of what you witnessed. Remember as an anthropologist, you are studying meaning and connection. You want to examine how and why people make these connections with their popular culture but avoid negatively judging the participants. Replies: Though you can provide substantial replies in whatever format you choose, I would encourage the following approach: · Reply as something that is a fandom that the original post describes and further elaborate or repectfully challenge the assumes and representations made. · Reply as someone in the Antiquarian Society who would like clarification or ask additional meaningful questions (based upon the articles that you read). · Reply as Gabriella Matachi 's with some last minute additional commentary that she forgot to bring to the meeting.
