This document discusses placental implantation abnormalities (PIAs) such as placenta previa, placenta accreta, vasa previa, and velamentous cord insertion. It covers the incidence, risk factors, ultrasound findings, diagnosis, complications, and recent advances in managing these conditions. PIAs can cause significant maternal, fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Recent studies have identified additional risk factors such as a history of prelabor cesarean delivery and prior postpartum hemorrhage. Ultrasound is useful for diagnosing PIAs based on criteria like the presence of lacunae, bridging vessels, and thinning of the uterine wall. The Placenta Accreta Index provides a scoring system
