effect with the low/high reliefs in order to signify that the young girl was fading away into death.
A peplos, which is a typical garment seen on specifically women in Greek art, hangs over her
shoulders and seems to create a dragging down feeling to the sculpture since peplos is heavy fabric.
The peplos also accentuates her body without actually revealing much of anything, which was
appropriate considering the time period, the age of the girl depicted, and the purpose that the

seem to be a subtle vertical line running through the young girl s contropossto stature.

Culture is not just about race, family background, and inheritance. It is bigger than that.
Characters and actor s choice are significant to present this. Characters used in the book and
movie relates. When I was reading the book, I had an idea of how Ashima, Gogol, Ashoke looks.
Most of those ideas were true. I thought Gogol would be better looking and darker shade skin.
Ashima is exactly what I thought she would look like. Ashoke is shown as this perfect husband,
dad a provider. A lot of Gogol s character is understood as it foreshadows when Gogol was six
months old and during his Rice Ceremony, Gogol had to choose between a dollar, a pen, and dirt.

Niyama is considered as the duties to the self; culturing oneself. Like yama, there are also five
Niyamas. The first of these Niyamas is shauca or purity. Purity or cleanliness is to be observed
both in the outer (physical) and inner (spiritual) aspects. In the outer and physical aspect, one has to
take care of his/her body and environment. Purity of the body entails one to take proper care of one
s health and condition. Eating healthy foods and not abusing the body are examples of proper care
for the body. A clean surrounding also contributes to the purity of the body. The other aspect is the
inner and spiritual aspect. Shauca in this aspect requires one to acquire pure thoughts and words.
Next is santosha or contentment. This means the acceptance of things as they are. Throughout life s
