3. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
We established the plot using a conversation between the characters at the beginning of the
film where they explain the plan of the heist. We used an omniscient narrative (the
characters finding out about events at the same time as the audience). This shows how they
are rushing the plan which could suggest faults in it. We have used a linear plot as the story
is quite confusing and wouldn’t be easy to understand if we didn’t.
4. During the montage, it shows our genre of crime thriller as there are various shots of a lot of
weapons paired with fast paced music. The weapons could be classed as iconography as they
show our genre and theme of the film. We also used the conversation scene to convey this. We
used a range of shots during the montage including panning shots to show the range of
weapons. This was highly effective in showing the audience our genre as well as showing the
potential danger and helping to show the story line. We used fast paced editing to show how
everything is being rushed which helps portray our film as a thriller.
5. The characters are wearing
predominantly black as it fits with the
theme of crime. This shows how the
characters are related to the events. We
used a flowing conversation to show
the intelligence of the characters as
teenagers are usually portrayed in a
negative light, however the teenagers in
our film are considered to be incredibly
intelligent as they plan something so
quickly that could have taken years.
7. How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
Our film shows how young people can get wrapped up in crime
from really young ages. This, according to statistics is a true
thing. We have portrayed the young criminals as having no real
adult influence which could easily be the cause of a life of crime.
8. The characters wore mainly black even in scenes where no criminal
activity was taking place suggesting that they are accustomed to
wear clothing that is similar. However, the conversation between
the characters suggests intelligence as they are planning something
which usually takes years to plan. This subverts from usual
stereotypes of teenagers as they are usually seen as unintelligent
and lazy. I believe that this would make more young people enjoy
the film as they aren’t being portrayed in a negative light.
9. We also used an equal number of male and female
characters which isn’t usual as there are usually less
women than men. This will show the audience that
there are powerful women which will appeal to a
female audience. However, it will also appeal to a
male audience as there are also strong male
characters in the script. We used shots such as
medium shots that show all the characters as
equal. I also believe that if we used more high or
low angle shots it would have changed this
perspective as they angles shots show power and
fear.
10. My character was dressed in bright colours
as well as a black dress suggesting that she is
a happy person however, she doesn’t say
much in the script which portrays her as
being quiet and shy. This could make most
people believe that she wouldn’t be good in
a life of crime. The character sat down was
shown to be the leader as she informs
others on what they are to do. The male
characters are both wearing black clothing
to show that they are the characters that are
performing the heist.
12. What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
We decided that we would use an independent distributer if we were to distribute the film as we feel
our film easily fits the criteria that most independent films follow. We have little to no special effects,
we used a storyline that may not be popular with a lot of people. However, films with similar topics
have become successful and popular such as Legend which grossed $86,836 in its opening weekend.
I believe that our film is targeting a limited audience as the themes in it are quite strong and the
storyline follows two men through prison after being caught for the robbery. This is one of the many
reasons that our film would have an independent distributer. I believe that Warp Films could be a good
distributer as they are a local company which would reflect the culture in our film as well as being quite
a well-known company in England. However, Icon films would be the second choice to distribute our
film as they have won awards for products that they have released such as the Certificate of Merit
Cinematography from the Chicago International Film Festival which would give our film some extra
publicity. However, Icon films tend to produce and distribute documentaries or factual content which
doesn’t fit the description of our film. Vertigo film is also a British company which would be our third
choice as it is local and they distribute a range of genres as well as popular films including
Streetdance 3D. Vertigo also owns a successful post production company in Berlin, which may give
our film more recognition in other countries.
14. Who would be the audience for your
media product?
We decided that we would give our film a 15 certificate due to
violence and weapons. However, there are other factors to be taken
into account. I believe that we would target a British audience as we
all have British accents and our film would most likely be distributed
by a British independent company. I also believe we would be
targeting a male audience mainly as our themes are more likely to
attract a male audience based on research done. We also decided
to give our film a 15 certificate due to the results that we got from
the survey as most people agreed that, due to strong violence, the
film would only be appropriate for people aged 15 or above. When
looking through the surveys, it showed that a lot of people have the
same view suggesting that it is a good certificate to use as many
people including the audience and ourselves agreed on it.
15. Due to our film being shot in a town, I believe that people from
towns and cities are more likely to watch our film as they will be able
to relate to the crime that happens in largely populated areas where
as people who live in less populated areas may find it unrealistic. I
also believe that an influence from the media would help our film as
their have been many articles on crime recently which would make
the film seem even more realistic to people who have been exposed
to this kind of media.
17. How did you attract/address your
audience?
We attracted our audience using positive connotations of things that are linked to them
such as age and gender. Because we used positive connotations of a broad aspect of
life, it could attract many people as almost everybody can relate to the film. We
portrayed teenagers as being highly intelligent as well as having leading male and
female roles. This shows how people are equal. None of the characters are seen as
being different which isn’t usually portrayed in films. As we have done this, our film will
stand out as being new and different compared to the many films who don’t take the
same approach that we did. I believe that we would have reached more people than
our target audience as we have used many themes and messages in our film. During
our planning, we believed that the use of weapons is most likely to appeal to a male
audience which was evident when speaking to people who would be considered our
target audience. However, the intelligence and how thought through the heist is will
attract both a male and female audience as people enjoy detailed plots. I believe our
work could be improved if we had used a higher range of shots.
19. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
Throughout the process of making this film, we have had to take
many things into consideration. During our pre-production stage,
we used different technologies in order to do our research. We
used I.M.D.B as well as different review websites in order to
research other films with similar storylines. This was helpful as is
gave us ideas as well as what an audience would like and who
our audience would be.
20. We also used the BBFC
website in order to give our
film an accurate age rating
which was easy to do using
the website and reading
about what makes a film
appropriate for a certain
rating.
21. We also used Celtx in order to create a script for our
production. During the production of the film we used a
GoPro camera for our montage sequence as well as a
Panasonic HCV 550 camera and IPhone footage to film our
production. To edit, we used Adobe Premier Pro as well as
the YouTube audio library for music as to avoid any
copyright issues. Throughout the different processes, we
used blogger in order to record the work that we had done.
This was helpful as it gave us a record of what work we had
done and what work we needed to do. For our blogger
work, we used word and power point in order to record our
work.
23. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in
the progression from it to the full product?
Our preliminary task was to create a short film
of walking down a corridor, opening a door
and having a conversation. We had to use a
shot reverse shot, match on action and follow
the 180 degree line.
24. During the filming process of ‘’The Inside Job’’ we used match on
action of the door opening, we used a conversation and we used
shot- reverse- shots.
Aspects of our film were really similar to our preliminary task.
However, we only used it as inspiration and worked on aspects of it
to improve our storyline. Doing the preliminary task helped us out by
giving us the basic knowledge we needed and allowed us to build on
what we had learnt.
Without the preliminary exercise, I believe we would have really
struggled to create our film. Without it, we wouldn’t have been able
to use basic techniques that made our film look professional.
