Agriculture has been supplying food, fibre and fuel as provisioning services, but is under severe distress due to low incomes. The farms also regulate climate, surface water flows, ground water levels, and waste assimilation and breakdown besides offering water purification. But there’s currently no mechanism to compensate the farmers for these services. However, modern agriculture with its excessive groundwater extraction, over use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and straw burning is also causing a number of disservices.
In this scenario, a mechanism to pay the farmers for ecological services they offer can work on two levels: it will ensure a guaranteed income to the farmers and it will prompt them to adopt sustainable farming practices like organic farming which will fetch higher incentives.
At the Little Rann of Kutch, salt production generates much higher economic value (Rs 694 million) than tourism (Rs 276 million) or biodiversity (Rs 136 million) but it’s also more damaging to the ecology. Tourism will help conserve biodiversity because most tourists come for the birds but they have less economic values and hence lesser attention.

Weekly and Monthly Groundwater Recharge Estimation in A Rural Piedmont Enviro...Agriculture Journal IJOEAR
Abstract— La Colacha basin (Córdoba province, Argentina) is a typical piedmont rural area where the unconfined aquifer is used for agricultural activities. The objective of this work is to show the estimation of the recharge (R) rate in the unconfined aquifer, using the water table fluctuation method (WTF). Furthermore, considerations in relation to monthly and weekly recharge rhythms and to the aquifer discharge (D) were performed. The aquifer shows a typical behavior of groundwater recharge areas with an important and quick answer of water table to the arrival of precipitations (P). After that, a recession curve is observed, representing the groundwater discharge to the local base level (the main stream of the basin). The monthly estimation resulted in an annual average R value of 14.3 % of total P. Although the major amounts of recharge occur in full summer, according to the major total amounts of P, the correlation between monthly R and P was low (r2 < 0.2) as a result of the high quantities of rainfall water that are converted into runoff. The regression coefficient is higher (r2 = 0.6) for the end of summer and autumn when rainfalls diminish and have low intensities. This situation provides less water to the aquifer, but the recharge process is more efficient. The ratio R/D for the 3 year series was positive, which means that the aquifer recharge was dominant. In the weekly recharge analysis, the annual average R is slightly lower than in the monthly one, that is, 12.4 % of the total P. Thus, it may be concluded that, in this case, the change from monthly to a weekly time step, did not much improve the final value. However, the information obtained with the weekly estimation is much more useful to interpret the aquifer detailed behavior.
The World Wide Fund for Nature, Australian Nation University, and the Luc Hoffman Institute gave this presentation on the water, food and energy projections for the lower Mekong Basin.
There is an intrinsic connection between biodiversity conservation, water and sanitation. With appropriate technologies, wastewater can be treated to produce fit-for-purpose water with recovery of nutrients to enhance biodiversity conservation in terms of flora and fauna. This project highlights a pilot subsurface flow Constructed Wetland unit in order to identify its performance in treating domestic wastewater and in recovering nutrients.
The project won the 1st Prize in National Quarry Life Award in 2012 in Tanzania.

Different Govt. Initiatives Taken for abatement of pollution : National Affo...SejalWasule
There have been several government initiatives taken for abatement of pollution in India. Here are three key examples:
National Afforestation Program and Act-2016: The National Afforestation Program was launched in 2016 with the aim of increasing forest cover in the country. The program aims to bring 33% of the country's land under forest and tree cover. The National Afforestation Act, which was also introduced in 2016, provides for the conservation, development, and sustainable management of forests. National River Conservation Plan: The National River Conservation Plan was launched in 1985 with the objective of cleaning up and conserving India's rivers. The plan covers 31 rivers in 14 states and aims to improve the water quality of these rivers. Under this plan, various measures are taken to control pollution, including setting up of sewage treatment plants, effluent treatment plants, and solid waste management facilities. Formation of National Green Tribunal: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) was formed in 2010 as a specialized court to handle environmental disputes and cases related to the enforcement of environmental laws. The NGT has jurisdiction over all civil cases related to environmental issues and has the power to issue orders and judgments related to the protection and conservation of the environment. The formation of the NGT has helped to improve the enforcement of environmental laws and has led to more effective management of environmental issues. The National Afforestation Program (NAP) was launched in 2002 to increase the forest cover of the country and to improve the ecological balance. In 2016, the government of India enacted the National Afforestation Program and Fund Act, 2016 to provide a legal framework for the implementation of the program.
The main objectives of the National Afforestation Program and Fund Act, 2016 are: To increase the forest cover of the country and improve the quality of forests. To enhance the capacity of the forest-dependent communities and to promote sustainable forest management practices.
To encourage private sector participation in afforestation and reforestation activities.
Under the Act, the National Afforestation Program Fund is established to provide financial support for afforestation and reforestation activities. The Fund is managed by a National Afforestation and Eco-Development Board, which is responsible for the implementation and monitoring of the program. The National Afforestation Program and Fund Act, 2016 is a significant step towards the protection and conservation of forests in India. It provides a legal framework for the implementation of the.he National River Conservation Plan (NRCP) is a comprehensive program launched by the Government of India to conserve and rejuvenate the polluted and degraded rivers in the country. The program was launched in 1985 with the objective of improving the water quality of rivers and their ecological health.

UNDERSTANDING WHAT GREEN WASHING IS!.pdfJulietMogola
Many companies today use green washing to lure the public into thinking they are conserving the environment but in real sense they are doing more harm. There have been such several cases from very big companies here in Kenya and also globally. This ranges from various sectors from manufacturing and goes to consumer products. Educating people on greenwashing will enable people to make better choices based on their analysis and not on what they see on marketing sites.

"Understanding the Carbon Cycle: Processes, Human Impacts, and Strategies for...MMariSelvam4
The carbon cycle is a critical component of Earth's environmental system, governing the movement and transformation of carbon through various reservoirs, including the atmosphere, oceans, soil, and living organisms. This complex cycle involves several key processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, and carbon sequestration, each contributing to the regulation of carbon levels on the planet.
Human activities, particularly fossil fuel combustion and deforestation, have significantly altered the natural carbon cycle, leading to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and driving climate change. Understanding the intricacies of the carbon cycle is essential for assessing the impacts of these changes and developing effective mitigation strategies.
By studying the carbon cycle, scientists can identify carbon sources and sinks, measure carbon fluxes, and predict future trends. This knowledge is crucial for crafting policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions, enhancing carbon storage, and promoting sustainable practices. The carbon cycle's interplay with climate systems, ecosystems, and human activities underscores its importance in maintaining a stable and healthy planet.
In-depth exploration of the carbon cycle reveals the delicate balance required to sustain life and the urgent need to address anthropogenic influences. Through research, education, and policy, we can work towards restoring equilibrium in the carbon cycle and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.

The Land Cover account points to the major deforestation that took place in the period 2003 – 2010, when the closed forest cover decreased from some 130,000 ha to around 28,000 ha.
The loss of closed forest cover seems to have halted in the period 2010-2014, when there was an increase from 28,000 to 33,000 ha.
The Land cover account also show the large growth in plantation crops, in particular coconut and oil palm plantations.
