Phytosomes are novel drug delivery systems containing hydrophilic plant constituents bound to phospholipids. This improves the absorption of the plant constituents, which are typically poorly absorbed due to their water-solubility and large molecule size. Phytosomes increase the bioavailability of plant extracts by forming complexes with phospholipids that are lipid-compatible and can be absorbed in the intestinal tract. They also show improved stability compared to plant extracts alone due to chemical bonds formed between the phospholipids and phytoconstituents. Phytosomes have applications for enhancing delivery of plant extracts, as well as for transdermal and dermal delivery in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
