Unit : Static Electricity
Topic : Lightning Conductor
School : St. Thomas HSS
Curricular approach : Role play model
Term: Discharge lightning conductor
Facts: . Lightning is dangerous flow of intense light .
. Lightning is the result of a neutralization process of static
electric charges taking place in nature.
. In tall buildings and Hospitals sharp pointed metal rods are used
to protect to the building from lightning.
.In our houses a metal rod with a pin pointed is used to protect
the light form lightning.
.A metal rod with sharp tip can protect the building with more
efficiency than metal road with broad tip.
.A lightning conductor which is not properly earthened causes
more harm than good.
Concept . Elimination of net electric charge from a charged body is
Discharging.
. Lightening conductor is a device used to protect tall buildings,
Towers, chimneys of factories etc from the damages due to lightning.
Learning
out comes
. The pupils acquire the ability to analyse personal values and
behaviour .
. Utilizes various strategies for solving interpersonal problems.
. Develop feeling of empathy towards others.
. Understand the facts about social problems and values.
. Acquire the ability to express their opinion .
Syntax
Phases
I- Warming up
II-Select participants
III-Set the stage
1V-Prepare observers
V-Enact
VI-Discuss and evaluate
VII-Share experiences and generalize
Social The model is moderately structured. The teacher is responsible for
system initiating the phases and guiding students through the activities in
each phases .
Principle . Accept all students response in non evaluate measures. Helps
Of reaction students explore various sides of problems situation and compare
alternative views .
. Increase student awareness of their own views and feelings by
reflection phrasing and summarizing their responses .
.Use the concept of role and emphasise that there are different ways
to play a role.
. Emphasise that there are alternative ways to resolve a problem.
Support - A well sequenced play script .
system -Minimum costume and decorative materials.
- Script leaves observation chart, activity sheet.
Stages Teacher Activity Pupil Activity
Phase I
Warming Teacher enters the class room and
Up greats students. Teachers narrates an
in incident that was written on news Students listen
paper. Teacher told that during carefully
yesterday’s lightening a tall building near
to city has been damaged or totally
affected. But it is interesting that the other
buildings nearer to it are safe. How this
happened? Why only one building Students looked
was affected? puzzled
What about the nearest building?
Teacher then says that it is because
during lightning discharging occurs Students listen
between building and the clouds. carefully
Today we are going to discuss the device
used to protect the tall building from
lightning.
Teacher then told the students that today
they are going to see a new method in
which the concept will be explained through Students seem
a play. They should properly observe the to be interested
play and fill answers in an activity sheet.
Today we are going to see how buildings
can be protected from lightning
Phase II
Select Teacher now selects 6 students for the
participants play.1st student is given the roll of a tall
building, 2nd the role of short building, 3rd Students
building with lightning conductor actively
properly earthened, 4th building without participate in
lightning conductor, 5th building with discussion
lightening conductor not properly
earthened and the last one is cloud.
Phase III
Set the stage Teacher selects one student among the
observer as leader and asks him to students actively
manage the class. She then takes the participate.
players outside and made the play clear
to them .
Phase IV Teacher now asks the other students
Prepare the to observe the play carefully and
Observer while observing special attention has students are
to be given to each situation. Then ready with
only you can find out how the device activity sheet.
correctly helps the buildings form
lightning .
Teacher then divides the students
into groups and gives an observation
sheet to the students.
Activity Sheet
1. If there is a chance to occur a discharge
between the cloud and the earth, it occurs
through the ………….. path .
2. To avoid the damage due to lightening ………
are used.
3. Lightning conductor consider of a metal rod
with …….. pointed metal rod fixed at the ….
Part of building.
4. A lightning conductor which is not properly
………..causes more harm than good.
The play begins
Phase V Scene 1
Enacting of
the play A tall building and short building Tall - hey… you
enter the stages. The tall building small building.
is very pride as he is tall compared keep distance from
to the other. me I feel shame to
see you beside me.
Small- Don’t hurt me so… after all we all are buildings.
Tall - you? Building ? … (Laugh) . Everyone first sees
me, then only you. So priority is always for me.
(Cloud with charge enters)
Cloud- yes, you are right. For me you are the right choice to
occur a discharge. As I prefer shortest path for me discharge
to occur.
Tall- Oh, No. Don’t do their and kind to me
Cloud -Sorry. As you are not protected, so I am helpless
(Cloud discharges through tall building and it gets damaged)
Scene 2
Now a building with lightening conductor properly
earthened and a building with out lightning conductor
enters the stage .
Building without lightening conductor -Hey…friend
what is on you top part? I have no such connection. Why is it
connected? It looks interesting .
Building with lightning conductor-Hey… it is Lightning
conductor which helps me form the effect of lightning.
Building without lightning conductor -can you tell how
it works?
Building with lightning conductor - As cloud induces an
opposite charge on these earth, plenty of damage is accumulated
at the sharp pointed ends of lightning conductor. Hence the air
surrounding lightning conductor gets ionized. The charges in the
air particles similar to that develop at the pointed ends of the
lightening conductor are repelled. These charges reach the cloud
and neutralize the charge on the clouds. Thus the charge formed
on the earth escapes through lightning conductor ,as it is properly
earthed thus I will be safe.
(cloud enters)
Building without lightning conductor -Oh no cloud is here for
discharging.Oh what can I do?
Building with lightning conductor -don’t worry; as I am large
and protected ,discharge will occur on me. It will be safe for
you this time.
Building without lightning conductor- yes I will also this time
connect lightening conductor properly to me for my safety .
(Cloud discharge occur through building with a safe mode)
Scene 3
Two buildings enter to the screen. One with lightning conductor
properly earthened and other not property earthened.
Lightning conductor properly earthened- Hey why are you not
earthened properly? It’s more harm for you than good .
Lightning conductor not properly earthened - Hey don’t advice
me ok. There is no importance in proper earthening .
Lightning conductor properly earthened - No my friend you are
wrong. If proper earthening is not done, then discharge may take
place through . Because due to induction, charge will be more
accumulated around you. It will cause danger to you.
(Cloud enters with charge)
Cloud- yes you are right. I feel much comfort to discharge through
you (not properly earthened) . Also you and me have the shortest
distance.. so, sorry I cannot help you.
(Cloud discharges through the not properly eartherned me
and more forward)
Play ends
Phase VI
Discuss Teacher congratulate the actors
And and asked the opinion of students.
Evaluate Did you all understand the play? yes
What was the play about? Working of
lightning
conductor.
Phase VII Then teacher discuss the activity sheet
Share and correlates Lightning conductor and its
experiences working.
And generalize
Teacher then shows a chart to text how
much they understand the concept of
Find out the correct one
1. Lightning conductor is
placed above tall building.
2. It has broad tip.
3. It has sharp tip.
4. Earthening of lightning
conductor should be proper.
5. Discharge occurs through
shortest path.
6. Discharge occurs through
longest path.
Formative Evaluation
Review
1. Define lightning conductor?
2. Explain the working of a lightning conductor?
Follow Up Activity
. List down the precautions to be adopted when there is lightning

Self designed innovative lesson plan

  • 1. Name of teacher : Divya K G Subject : Physics Unit : Static Electricity Topic : Lightning Conductor School : St. Thomas HSS Curricular approach : Role play model Term: Discharge lightning conductor Facts: . Lightning is dangerous flow of intense light . . Lightning is the result of a neutralization process of static electric charges taking place in nature. . In tall buildings and Hospitals sharp pointed metal rods are used to protect to the building from lightning. .In our houses a metal rod with a pin pointed is used to protect the light form lightning. .A metal rod with sharp tip can protect the building with more efficiency than metal road with broad tip. .A lightning conductor which is not properly earthened causes more harm than good. Concept . Elimination of net electric charge from a charged body is
  • 2. Discharging. . Lightening conductor is a device used to protect tall buildings, Towers, chimneys of factories etc from the damages due to lightning. Learning out comes . The pupils acquire the ability to analyse personal values and behaviour . . Utilizes various strategies for solving interpersonal problems. . Develop feeling of empathy towards others. . Understand the facts about social problems and values. . Acquire the ability to express their opinion . Syntax Phases I- Warming up II-Select participants III-Set the stage 1V-Prepare observers V-Enact VI-Discuss and evaluate VII-Share experiences and generalize Social The model is moderately structured. The teacher is responsible for system initiating the phases and guiding students through the activities in each phases .
  • 3. Principle . Accept all students response in non evaluate measures. Helps Of reaction students explore various sides of problems situation and compare alternative views . . Increase student awareness of their own views and feelings by reflection phrasing and summarizing their responses . .Use the concept of role and emphasise that there are different ways to play a role. . Emphasise that there are alternative ways to resolve a problem. Support - A well sequenced play script . system -Minimum costume and decorative materials. - Script leaves observation chart, activity sheet. Stages Teacher Activity Pupil Activity Phase I Warming Teacher enters the class room and Up greats students. Teachers narrates an in incident that was written on news Students listen paper. Teacher told that during carefully yesterday’s lightening a tall building near to city has been damaged or totally affected. But it is interesting that the other buildings nearer to it are safe. How this happened? Why only one building Students looked
  • 4. was affected? puzzled What about the nearest building? Teacher then says that it is because during lightning discharging occurs Students listen between building and the clouds. carefully Today we are going to discuss the device used to protect the tall building from lightning. Teacher then told the students that today they are going to see a new method in which the concept will be explained through Students seem a play. They should properly observe the to be interested play and fill answers in an activity sheet. Today we are going to see how buildings can be protected from lightning Phase II Select Teacher now selects 6 students for the participants play.1st student is given the roll of a tall building, 2nd the role of short building, 3rd Students building with lightning conductor actively properly earthened, 4th building without participate in lightning conductor, 5th building with discussion lightening conductor not properly earthened and the last one is cloud. Phase III
  • 5. Set the stage Teacher selects one student among the observer as leader and asks him to students actively manage the class. She then takes the participate. players outside and made the play clear to them . Phase IV Teacher now asks the other students Prepare the to observe the play carefully and Observer while observing special attention has students are to be given to each situation. Then ready with only you can find out how the device activity sheet. correctly helps the buildings form lightning . Teacher then divides the students into groups and gives an observation sheet to the students. Activity Sheet 1. If there is a chance to occur a discharge between the cloud and the earth, it occurs through the ………….. path . 2. To avoid the damage due to lightening ……… are used. 3. Lightning conductor consider of a metal rod with …….. pointed metal rod fixed at the …. Part of building. 4. A lightning conductor which is not properly ………..causes more harm than good.
  • 6. The play begins Phase V Scene 1 Enacting of the play A tall building and short building Tall - hey… you enter the stages. The tall building small building. is very pride as he is tall compared keep distance from to the other. me I feel shame to see you beside me. Small- Don’t hurt me so… after all we all are buildings. Tall - you? Building ? … (Laugh) . Everyone first sees me, then only you. So priority is always for me. (Cloud with charge enters) Cloud- yes, you are right. For me you are the right choice to occur a discharge. As I prefer shortest path for me discharge to occur. Tall- Oh, No. Don’t do their and kind to me Cloud -Sorry. As you are not protected, so I am helpless (Cloud discharges through tall building and it gets damaged) Scene 2 Now a building with lightening conductor properly earthened and a building with out lightning conductor enters the stage . Building without lightening conductor -Hey…friend what is on you top part? I have no such connection. Why is it
  • 7. connected? It looks interesting . Building with lightning conductor-Hey… it is Lightning conductor which helps me form the effect of lightning. Building without lightning conductor -can you tell how it works? Building with lightning conductor - As cloud induces an opposite charge on these earth, plenty of damage is accumulated at the sharp pointed ends of lightning conductor. Hence the air surrounding lightning conductor gets ionized. The charges in the air particles similar to that develop at the pointed ends of the lightening conductor are repelled. These charges reach the cloud and neutralize the charge on the clouds. Thus the charge formed on the earth escapes through lightning conductor ,as it is properly earthed thus I will be safe. (cloud enters) Building without lightning conductor -Oh no cloud is here for discharging.Oh what can I do? Building with lightning conductor -don’t worry; as I am large and protected ,discharge will occur on me. It will be safe for you this time. Building without lightning conductor- yes I will also this time connect lightening conductor properly to me for my safety . (Cloud discharge occur through building with a safe mode) Scene 3 Two buildings enter to the screen. One with lightning conductor properly earthened and other not property earthened.
  • 8. Lightning conductor properly earthened- Hey why are you not earthened properly? It’s more harm for you than good . Lightning conductor not properly earthened - Hey don’t advice me ok. There is no importance in proper earthening . Lightning conductor properly earthened - No my friend you are wrong. If proper earthening is not done, then discharge may take place through . Because due to induction, charge will be more accumulated around you. It will cause danger to you. (Cloud enters with charge) Cloud- yes you are right. I feel much comfort to discharge through you (not properly earthened) . Also you and me have the shortest distance.. so, sorry I cannot help you. (Cloud discharges through the not properly eartherned me and more forward) Play ends Phase VI Discuss Teacher congratulate the actors And and asked the opinion of students. Evaluate Did you all understand the play? yes What was the play about? Working of lightning conductor. Phase VII Then teacher discuss the activity sheet Share and correlates Lightning conductor and its experiences working.
  • 9. And generalize Teacher then shows a chart to text how much they understand the concept of Find out the correct one 1. Lightning conductor is placed above tall building. 2. It has broad tip. 3. It has sharp tip. 4. Earthening of lightning conductor should be proper. 5. Discharge occurs through shortest path. 6. Discharge occurs through longest path.
  • 10. Formative Evaluation Review 1. Define lightning conductor? 2. Explain the working of a lightning conductor? Follow Up Activity . List down the precautions to be adopted when there is lightning
