2. What is Puberty?
• This presentation is intended for girls in their early teens (Ages 9+)
• Puberty is simply nature's way of converting a girl into a women, for
reproductive purposes
• Girls reach puberty and sexual maturity earlier than boys
• The female hormone estrogen activates all the changes in the body’s
development into a women

3. Increased Height & Weight
• Begin to gain about 17% to 18% of their adult height, around age 9
• Girls hit their growth spurt about six months before they begin their first
period
• Weight gain is typically normal
• Body fat builds along the upper arms, thighs, and upper back
• Hips become wider, while your waist becomes narrower

4. Changing Body Shape
• While entering puberty it is common for girls to develop anxiety about their
body image
• From a young age girls envy models and are told by society that being thin is
attractive
• While a girl is entering puberty she tends to gain most of her body fat around
the belly area
• This body fat is called adipose tissue and is completely normal
• Adipose tissue is simply connective tissue where fat is stored
• The body then redistributes the fat from the stomach and waist to the breast
and hips in order to mold a womanly figure

5. Breast Development
• Earliest sign in girls experiencing puberty
• The first visible stage of puberty for girls is a nickel-sized lump under one or
both nipples, also known as breast buds
• Breast buds occur around the age of 9 or 10, sometimes earlier or later on in
life
• Development may feel tender or sore

6. Pubic Hair
• Pubic hair is the second sign of puberty in the pubic area
• 10 to 15% develop pubic hair before breast buds
• First hair is sparse, straight, and soft
• Then hair grows in it becomes darker, curlier, and course
• As development begins over the next few years hair grows up the lower
abdomen eventually forming a triangular shape; which spreads to inner
thighs
• After two years of the start of pubic hair, hair begins to grow under the
arm pits

8. Menstruation (Mensus/Menarche)
• Menstruation begins in most cases one and a half years to three years after
breast buds develop
• Monthly bleeding
• During menstruation, your body sheds the lining of the uterus wall
• Menstrual blood flows from the uterus through a small opening in the cervix
and then passes out the vagina
• Pads and tampons are used to absorb the bleeding
• Menstruation cycles last 3 to 5 days (everyone is different)

9. Why is Menstruation Important?
• It’s a sign that important parts of the body are working properly
• Menstruation cycle provides important body chemicals, called hormones
• Hormones keep you healthy
• A menstruation cycle is counted from the first day of one period to the first
day of the next period
• An average cycle is about 28 days

10. Reproduction
• Each month one of your two ovaries will release a ripe egg inside of you
• A women becomes pregnant when a mans sperm unites with the egg, this is
called fertilization
• A fertilized egg attaches itself to the inner lining of the uterus, which is also
called the womb
• The womb is where the baby lives while it’s growing and awaiting birth
• As a result the uterus prepares for this possibility by forming a thick layer of
tissue and importing extra blood just in case

• During puberty your hormones go into overdrive
• The body starts to produce more oils, more sweat, you begin to grow hair under your arms, on your
legs and around the pubic area
• As a result your body can become very smelly
• During puberty sweat glands in groin and armpits, and our feet become more active, producing more
sweat
To eliminate body odor you should:
• Wash once a day with warm water and soap
• Always wear clean clothes
• Constantly wash sports clothing
• Change the linens on your bed (once a week)
