PUBERTY
PUBERTY
• A normal part of human development when a child’s body starts to develop adult-
like features and when his/her reproductive organs are already capable of
reproduction
• HORMONES a chemical substances secreted by organs called the glands. It controls
many activities: growth, absorption of nutrients, development of body parts, and
reproduction, and also regulate the activities of some organs like kidneys and
reproductive organs.
• During this stage, the glands produces large amounts of hormones.
PHYSICAL CHANGES IN BOYS
1. GROWTH SPURT – rapid increase of height. First experience at the age of 1 to 3
years old (toddler years), and then again during puberty (ages 10 to 14). Muscles
and bones grow bigger, shoulders broaden, and muscles gain more strength.
2. Development of Adam’s apple – the larynx enlarged and noticeable lump in the
throat. It causes the boy’s voice to deepen.
3. Growth of body hair – face, armpits, arms, legs, ad pubic area. More hairs more
area to trap dirt, therefore keeping the body neat and clean. Hair that left
unwashed and unclean does not smell good and produces unpleasant odor.
4. Active oil secretion – increase secretion of oil in the skin. Oil sometimes clogs the
pores on the skin thus causing pimples. Oil in the armpits makes it susceptible to
odor-causing bacteria.
5. Wet dreams – boys experiences wet dreams or the release of semen during
nighttime while he is asleep. (reproductive organs develop during puberty)
PHYSICAL CHANGES IN GIRLS
1. Growth spurt – increase in height during puberty period from 10-14 yrs. Old.
2. Development of breasts – breasts develop in preparation of mother hood. It has
glands that produce and secretes milk when female gives birth.
3. Growth of body hair – armpits and pubic area (unlike boys, girls do not have
much body hair on the face, chest, arms, and legs)
4. Active oil secretion - secretion of oil during this stage is increasing, thus, girls
should be more conscious in overall cleanliness, and hygiene to avoid body odor
and acne. Some recommends to use deodorants for underarm areas.
5. Widening of hips – females store more fats than male. Widening of hips is due to
fat deposits. Which in turn enable them to develop the physique necessary for them
to have better balance during pregnancy.
6. Onset of menstruation – reproductive organs develop and active for preparation
of childbearing.
MENSTRUAL CYCLE
MENSTRUAL CYCLE is the monthly shedding of uterine tissues through
menstruation.
Menstruation (3-5 days) – uterine lining thins out and shreds causes outflow of
blood.
 after menstruation, uterine lining begins to thicken in preparation for fertilized egg
(5 days)
Ovulation (10 day after the starts of period) – ovaries produce egg cell that could be
fertilized and could be develop into a fetus.
If fertilization happens, the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine wall.
If NOT, the thickened uterine wall starts to disintegrates, and MENSTRUATION
WILL OCCUR.
• MENSTRUAL CYCLE OF EVERY GIRL DIFFERS
• It could be short as 28 days or as long as 36 days. Doctors count the menstrual cycle
includes the days of periods.
• 28 days cycle – starts her period every four weeks
• 22 days cycle – starts her period every three week
• Average period lasts three to four days (can be shorter or longer/ranging from 1 to
7 days)
• Most females ovulates between 12 and 14 days before their period.
• 28 days cycle – ovulate in the middle of the cycle
• 22 days cycle – ovulate just a few days after her period.
PSYCHOLOGICAL CHANGES DURING
PUBERTY
Adolescence – period that follows puberty when a child acts and behaves like an adult.
An adolescent, changes the way they think, fell, and interact.
They became responsible and independent.
Discover new beliefs from your friends and classmates and from adults as you begin
to develop your own belief, ideals, and personality.
Start to form friendships with those opposite sex.
Value close relationships with your peers and you treasure the feeling of being
accepted in a peer group.
Conscious about the appearance and even interests.
Adolescents tends to be moodier.
Vulnerable to influences
