3. Who is Tom Jenkins?
Tom Jenkins is a successful and very popular sports photographer, who has travelled around
the world for 25 years taking photographs for sports events and personalities for The Guardian
and Observer newspapers. Jenkins has taken photographs for the six football world cups and
four summer Olympic Games and claims that that is the highlight of his career.
Tom Jenkins claims that if he had the talent he would be in front of the camera rather than
behind the camera. As a young boy Jenkins was obsessed with sports but his love for sports
didn’t not match his ability. Tom Jenkins then went on to study photography and fell in love the
concept and found then found that he could combine his two loves for sports and photography
with career in sports photography. He studied a photography course run by Magnum member
David Hurn Newport in South Wales. Leaving from the institution in 1989 he began to freelance
for Allsport. Progressively he began to get more consistent work for The Guardian and when
The Observer was acquire 1993 he began to also work for them.
His book for sports photography named ‘In The Moment’ was published in 2012 at the same
time as the London Olympics and was aided my an exhibition in Kings Place, London and
Newcastle.

photo this suggests the idea of fatigue as from the posture of the
player also he looks tired. The photographer uses shallow focus as the
player is in focus whilst the people towards the top of the photo are out
of focus this shows that the player as a sense of significance.
Subject and positioning:
The main subject of the photograph is central to the photo with fans
grabbing his arm this suggests the facts that he is respect.
Framing:
From the photo the audience can figure out why the player is
significant by the date in the background of 2003, this a significant day
for the English Rugby team and fans would be able to identify this. The
main focal point in this photo is the number on the players shirt and
the colour of the players shirt as it tells audience the significance of the
player. The photographer has used a fast shutter speed to reduce the
motion blur, as in the photo the main subject is moving away from the
camera as well as the crowd constantly moving.
Angle:
The angle is which it is taken from is from eye level, this is
so that they can capture the number on the players shirt
whilst also capturing the date in the background which adds
the overall message of the photograph, and for fans of
rugby being able to see that date will be significant to them
as it was a special moment. Also for people that are not
fans they can identify that it is important from the angle as it
also captures the people and there reactions around.

5. Rule of third:
The rule of third in this photograph is the player in the centre of the
photo as it suggest that he should be the first subject that the audience
look at when they see the photo, and then the photo opens up to the
ball which makes the audience question what he is doing and why it is
significant that specific moment. The aspect in the photo which
captures peoples attention in this photo is the shirt that the players
wearing and also the number on goalies T-shirt as for footballs fans this
will mean something significant or be a memory of an iconic moment
for football fans especially for either of them teams that are playing.
Framing:
The way the photo is framed is with the main focal point slightly right of
the photo, with a shallow focus as the player on the right is the only
subject in the photo that is in focus signifying that he should be the one
that the audience are focused as he is significant to the photo and the
meaning to football fans. The photographer has used a fast shutter
speed to reduce the motion blur, as in the photo the goalies is diving
and the players are still running as well as the crowd in the background.
Subject and positioning:
The positioning of the focal point is slightly off to the right attracting the
attention to all subjects on the right, as the ball in the photo is on the
right also which helps the meaning of the photo and the purpose.
Angle:
The angle in which the photo is taken from is a low angle, long shot
angle this creates the affects of capturing the moment as a whole and
illustrating to the audience how many people and fans went to see that
iconic moment.

suggest the idea of an iconic moment as the importance of the photo
being natural is important to fans. The shadow that is toward the top of

is no light it could also suggest the idea of tension and anticipation as

he is central to the photo the focus of the photo then opens
up to the runners leg as it he has a prosthetic leg this
suggests the idea of inspiration as the runner is a successful
runner and has achieved great things in the Olympics.
Framing:
The focal point in the photograph is the long shot of the
runner running as it create the idea of power and him being
a role model to those who suffer from the same problems.
In the photo there is a deep focus on the subject and the
location of the runner the most important aspects of the
photo. The photographer has used a fast shutter speed to
reduce the motion blur, as in the photo the runner is
sprinting and therefore capturing the cation as it happens.
Angle:
The angle which the photograph is taken from is a low angle
this is to make the subject look bigger than he actually is as
the stadium is a big place. Rather than a low angle which
would make him look very small. The use of a low angle also
makes the runner look powerful and shows his significance
to the Paralympic world.

The darkness in the lighting causes a sense of action and
tension as the runner runs.
Meaning:
The meaning of this photograph is to make Oscar Pistorius
look powerful and promote him as a athlete.
Subject and positioning:
The way the photo has been taken it is a full body shot capturing the action of the
subject and the every feature of him as he runs to so that fans of the runner can
identify who he is. The full body shot also tells the audience of the photo the
significance in the photo and why it was taken and that was to capture
Paralympian runner Oscar Pistorius as he runs.
