This photograph captures the perfect moment of Jonny Wilkinson winning the Rugby World Cup. It is striking because if the photo was taken even a second later, the moment would have been lost. The photo has a narrow depth of field focused on Wilkinson with the audience out of focus in the back. It also has high contrast lighting from the stadium that makes Wilkinson stand out.

The photo wouldn’t of been nearly as striking or perfect for the moment of glory. The fact that
Jonny is in the center of the photo is very crucial and obvious due to all the audience putting
their hands out to shake his. This photo didn’t need to rule of thirds or direct address to be eye
catching, because of that. The photo shows a narrow depth of field due to the audience at the
very back being more out of focus. This makes the photograph even more focused on Jonny
himself. This photo shows a high contrast lighting due to all the bright colors and artificial
lighting from the stadium. Another thing about this photograph which I find striking are it’s
religious connotations. By this I mean the way his arms are stretched out makes him look like
Jesus on the cross. Which again, shows how in the moment, he was a god.

2. What I find most striking about this photo again is, how well the moment was captured. If it had
been just a second later the framing wouldn’t have been nearly as perfect. What’s also striking
to me is how I caught the Goaly and the ball in mid air. This photo fits really well with the rule of
thirds due to it’s framing and how Ronaldo is perfectly in the middle of the Goaly and the net.
Also, Rooney is in perfect framing with the net. This photograph has a narrow depth of field due
to the fact the net and the audience are both not in focus to great effect and make two of the
biggest footballers of the time stand out even more. There is obviously no direct address used in
this photo due to it not being staged and it capturing a moment. This photo is high contrast
lighting due to the bright colors formed from the ambient light of the stadium. This photo would
have been taking a very high shutter speed from behind the net to ensure that the moment was
captured. Ronaldo is also in focus point due to the perfect framing of the photograph.

3. Unlike the other photographs before this one, this one is not a photo of a moment being
captured, it’s staged as it was used for a BT advert as you can tell from the clearly labeled
sports wear he is wearing. Also, unlike the other photos this photo has been taken in a broad
depth of field. This is to Show the Olympic stadium as well as him as it was very important at
the time. This photo has a high contrast lighting as the sky has been made to look very bright
up against his black clothing. Even though this photo is staged there is no direct address to
show that he is focused on running. The angle of this photograph is a low one due to help
give the connotation that at the time he was looked up to as one of the highest profile
disabled athlete in the world. Artificial light is also used on his face to make him stand out
and the angle that he’s at makes him look a lot bigger than the stadium which connotes him
looking like a god.

4. This is a photo of Andrew Strauss lifting the Ashes, as team mates spray champagne after
England’s win over Australia in the fifth test match, London 2009. I consider this photo to be
striking due to the fact of how well the moment and emotion was photographed. I’d say the
photo Is taken in a narrow depth of field due to Andrew and the Ashes standing out the most
and it being the main focus point. It’s been edited well. This is due to that fact that the way
the champagne is spraying out into small dots almost makes it look like confetti which
connotes that it’s some sort of celebration. It has a very high contrast lighting due to the
colors used thought out it. The photo also has good framing in the way that he is stood in a
sort of pyramid of champagne.

5. This is a photo taken by Tom Jenkins of the French team pursuit cyclists compete in the track
world cup, Manchester, 2011. This again is a photograph which proves how good he is at
capturing and really showing the emotion behind a photograph. It’s a broad depth of field as
it is important that the audience are aware they are on bikes. The waves over the photo
connotes the energy within the game and the waves of thought of what could be going on in
that persons head within that exact moment. It’s also high contrast lighting due to the bright
intense colour that capture the audience’s eyes and shows a plain but effective background
to not get rid of the fact that the focus is the players.
