Philosophy Essay
Writing an essay on the topic of "Philosophy Essay" can be quite challenging. This subject
matter delves into complex theories, abstract concepts, and deep philosophical inquiries that
require a nuanced understanding and critical analysis. Crafting an essay on philosophy demands
more than just regurgitating information; it necessitates profound contemplation, logical
reasoning, and the ability to communicate intricate ideas effectively.
The difficulty arises from the need to navigate through a myriad of philosophical perspectives,
from ancient thinkers like Plato and Aristotle to modern philosophers such as Kant and
Nietzsche. Each philosopher presents unique ideas and arguments, often challenging
conventional wisdom and pushing the boundaries of human comprehension. As an essay writer,
one must grapple with these diverse viewpoints, evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, and
construct a coherent narrative that reflects a deep engagement with the subject matter.
Moreover, philosophy is not confined to abstract theorizing but extends into various branches
such as metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy, each posing its own set of
questions and debates. Addressing these diverse branches requires a broad interdisciplinary
approach, drawing insights from psychology, sociology, history, and other disciplines to enrich
the analysis.
Additionally, philosophical writing demands precision in language and clarity in expression.
Given the abstract nature of philosophical concepts, conveying ideas in a concise and
comprehensible manner is paramount. This requires careful consideration of terminology, logical
structure, and rhetorical devices to ensure that the essay communicates complex ideas effectively
to the reader.
In summary, writing an essay on the topic of "Philosophy Essay" presents a formidable
challenge, requiring a deep understanding of philosophical concepts, critical thinking skills,
interdisciplinary knowledge, and effective communication abilities.

Canadian Law Personal Statement
As a child, I was asked the famous question, what would you like to be when you
grow up? and I would always reply A Lawyer! Ten years later, I gradually began to
understand what the word meant and the responsibilities behind it. Over the past
decade, I have developed a desire to fight for the rights of the less privileged. I
recall my dad reiterating a story from my childhood; my family and I were in
traffic when a beggar approached our car to ask for alms. As a concerned girl, I
asked my father to please give him some. Growing up in West Africa, this became
an accepted phenomenon, seeing beggars on the road, impoverished families, and
other disadvantaged individuals. Unfortunately, some of these people are in this
situation because the society and the legal system failed them. The law tends to
recognize those in power and the wealthy, and often disregards those in the lower
class; although they are the most vulnerable and deserve to be protected by the law
also. Life in Canadagave me a different perspective on the law. In Canada, the law is
upheld, and the legal system does its best to protect the rights of Canadian citizens. I

I have broken out of my reserved shell and matured into this confident and
forthright young woman. I have faced challenges that I felt I was not qualified for,
nevertheless I have realized with enough effort, determination and support, you can
achieve anything. I believe I would benefit substantially from your Labour,
Employment, and Social Justice stream. As mentioned earlier, I want to be a voice
to those that are ignored by the legal system, and as a migrant woman who is also a
racialized minority, I would be a distinct representation of those voices. I do
anticipate the education and different skills I would acquire at Western Law, which
would lead me closer to achieving my childhood dream of being an integral part of

quickly determine the root cause and extent of the problem minimizing the amount

to the mixers that will alert operations when a mixer did not get all of its chemicals.
This alarm has helped us detect failing valves. Additionally, the OH model was
modified so that turbo temperatures are reduced when a turbo reaches OH set point.
This has prevented small production upsets from getting worse due to over

that can be changed with different stabilization or new bags.

tank costs approximately $3 million to replace. I investigated the potential of going

alternate service and would reduce the number of yard tanks that need to be rebuilt. It
was determined through dynamic modeling with the Advanced Controls Group that

Aggreeing with a tour company may get a lot of visitors to hotel. Also, there is always
one another hotel around one known hotel. This lucky one could gain recognition by
partnering with a neighboring attraction. In today s technology, consumers are able to
book their hotels by reading feedbacks and evaluating prices online. The success of a
hotel often depends on how it uses key factors like customer service, advertising, cost
control and product differentiation. Customer service is an significant part of the
hotel experience for customers. Hotel service starts from the front desk worker
serves, as the gatekeeper of the hotel. This employee provides the customer s first and
last impression. They should create a warm and welcoming atmosphere while they
meet their customers. There may be problematic situations during their stay. In that
case, from gatekeeper to hotel manager, who is responsible with their comfort will
need to listen carefully and understand what the problem is and then handle the
situation. Thus, hotels achieve a critical success factor by ensuring the staff is
knowledgeable, polite and capable of solving any conflicts that may arise at that
point. Providing quality service also includes remembering the names with

to chapter 7, 3 facts about the connection between delinquency and abuse for girls
are one that girls are more traumatized by child abuse. According to the text, studies
have showed that girls who were victims of child abuse are at a high risk of
participating in antisocial behaviors (258). Another fact is that girls that are victims
of child abuse often suffer from bad childhoods. In addition, some girls are forced
to leave their homes and are left on the streets to protect, defend, and shelter
themselves (258). Many girls who are forced to leave their homes often participate in
sexual altercations in order to support themselves as well because they have no...

Power In Ancient Rome
Ancient Rome was made up of 3 different classes of people. The plebeians,
patricians, and the slaves. I will be talking about each one of these groups of people,
how the government worked, the different positions in the government, how much
power each class had, and how they got power. Also, The 2 types of government I
will be talking about are the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire.
Patricians:
The patricians were very wealthy. They owned land, had nice houses, and they had
slaves work for them. The patricians also had the most power in the Roman Republic
and Roman Empire. If you wanted to be a patrician as a plebeian, it would be very
hard unless you changed your family affiliation. If you wanted to be a patrician, you
had to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a very well known government because many countries use this type of
Government too even today like the United States. The way this government was
formed was in 509 BCE, the Romans took the Etruscans power. Before this, the
Etruscans had ruled over the Romans. The Etruscans were another civilization in
Ancient Italy at the time. Once they were free, they made a republic called The
Roman Republic. Keep in mind, you should know that the government changed a
lot in its time. The patricians pretty much had all the power early on in the
Republic. The highest position in the Republic was held by the consuls, who were
the rulers of the Roman Republic. A senate made up of patricians and the
assemblies elected these people to become consuls. Plebeians pretty much had no
say in the government at the time. Something that was common at the time was
that only men could vote. This was true for the Roman Republic too. After a little
while, the plebeians eventually got to vote for their representatives, called tribunes
who got the power to change laws or ideas passed by the senate. While individual
plebeians or roman citizens outside the patrician, and senatorial positions were able
to get power by becoming wealthy and joining the equestrian class, their chances of
joining the senatorial class were pretty low. If a plebeian has enough money, they
could get into the equestrian class. As a group though, the plebeians were able to
effect political and social change by forming a group and going against the people
more powerful than them. For example, since there were so many plebeians, they
could riot against the higher
Andrew Carnegie s Life During The Progressive Era
During the Progressive Era there was a lot of horrible things happening. There
were people that didn t try to make it easier to live at this time. Those people didn t

Andrew Carnegie is a robber baron and that means he will do whatever is
necessary to be on top. He was born November 25, 1835 in Dunfermline United
Kingdom. when he was 16 he had a friend in scotland and they wrote letter to each
other. Carnegie wrote to him a lot about different things. They discuss how their two
countries were so different in the way that it handles different issues. at that time he
was so good at writing letters that he wrote for the newspaper. When Carnegie was
younger he had to
The Maze Reflected In The Maze Runner By James Dashner
Although some things in life can sound devastating and illogical, to consider that
everything happens for a reason might change ones viewpoint on a problem. In
The Maze Runner by James Dashner, some people have not considered that.
Dashner writes about a boy named Thomas who finds himself in strange, vast maze
that shifts its position everyday. He is accompanied by others (who call themselves
Gladers) who, just like him, have no recollection of their past. After Thomas had
spent one day in the maze, a girl is sent into the maze with a message that she is the
last one ever. She is the only girl in the maze and things had started changing ever
since she had been sent into the maze. Thomas struggles to solve the maze and finds
out that the maze is some kind of experiment. Although the maze may seem like a
cruel and terrible experiment, it might the best way for a brighter future with the
context of a horrific disaster.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the Gladers had finally escaped the maze and were in the chamber along
with The Creators of the maze they were still furious and had been truly scarred
from the maze. A woman walks in along with a Glader who, as a final test, throws a
knife at Thomas but Chuck (Thomas best friend) gets in the way of the knife and
sacrifices himself for Thomas. Thomas is devastated and the woman explained to
Thomas, All things happen for a purpose. You must understand this. Pg.360. The
woman was trying to calm Thomas by saying that his friend s death happened for a
reason. Thomas had been heartbroken having promised Chuck that he would find is
family for him. But the woman knew that it was for the best somehow, although it
may sound merciless and evil. She knew that one day, Thomas, along with all of the
Gladers, would understand the purpose of all of

The critical issue is that Ernst Ernst, who were First Securities auditors for more than

led to Ernst Ernst failure to discover poor internal practices of the firm. Thereby, this
prevented Ernst Ernst from completing an effective and efficient audit of the

Nay. Also, if proper procedures were taken into effect, the unveiling of the escrow
syndicate fund would have led auditors, Ernst Ernst to take initiative action in
investigating this fund. However, this was left undetected and gave Mr. Nay the
opportunity to act fraudulently toward others. In addition the defrauded investors
argue that if this mail rule was discovered then this would have led to the
investigation of the escrow fund by the Midwest Stock Exchange and SEC, directing
us to critical factor #4.
Critical Factor #4
Investors alleged that the Midwest Stock Exchange failed to adequately investigate
Nay s background before admitting his firm into membership; that Nay s past
unethical conduct would have forced the exchange to deny his firm a membership
application. Possibly putting a stop to the engaging in an escrow syndicate fraud.
This is relevant because if the Midwest Stock Exchange had investigated Nay s
background before allowing him membership in their firm, then Nay would not have
been able to use the Stock Exchange as a back up in helping him get this fraudulent
fund up and running. Also Ernst Ernst should have known through financial
statements that Nay was in membership with a stock exchange firm.

Cardiac muscle tissue is a specialised muscle tissue that is only found in the heart. It
is an involuntary muscle as it doesn t response to the needs of your body, even though

Character Analysis Of Sketchy
The journey of a lifetime starts with the turning of a page (Anders). This means
that as a book is read new adventures come along as well as relationships with
characters. The book Sketchy written by Olivia Samms has a very interesting and
unique plot. The main character, Beatrice Washington, has just come out of rehab
and is trying to stay drug free. She has also just moved to a new high school and is
trying to get settled there. Although a setback to her goal occurs when Willa
Prescott, a girl from the high school, is raped and left to die. Bea meets Willa in
her art class and soon finds out she had a rare and strange ability. Bea has the
power to draw what people are thinking. She had read Willa s mind and drawn the
rapist, although Willa refused to admit that she remembered anything from the
night she was raped. Bea has a new goal in mind; bring justice to Willa and the
families of the other girls who had been murdered/raped. Only if she can convince
the police to believe her, and have Willa agree to who the rapist was. When Charlie
reviewed the book Sketchy on goodreads.com, she was very enthusiastic and rated
the book very positively, focusing on characterdevelopment. Charlie is accurate in
her assessment of the book because Beatrice is a very relatable character but is not
the typical teenager which is portrayed in most books; she is more down to earth.
Charlie left a positive review of the book, making many comments favoring the
setup of character development. She makes a remark saying nothing is so over the
top to make it unbelievable and by doing so, I believe a wide audience will be able
to easily connect with the character . This helps support the idea that the build up of
character development can help increase the overall plot. It does this because it states
how Beatrice is a character portrayed as a rebellious teenager but it is not
extremely stereotypical and this helps the reader be more related to the story and
feel as if he/she could imagine themselves in this position. Charlie also notes that It
adds a dimension that elevates a good story to a great story . This is referring to the
way the characters and supporting characters help add another side to the story to

Kennedy was assassinated while riding in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas where he
was campaigning for the next presidential election. John F. Kennedy, born on May

his goal was a world of law and free choice, banishing the world of war and
coercion. His administration thus saw the beginning of new hope for both the equal
rights of Americans and the peace of the world. Some would say that he was one of
the most loved presidents in the history of the United State of America, which raises

The Importance Of Nonfiction
Reading is something you do every day. In fact, you are reading right now.
Reading is very important in everyday life, so we also stress the importance of it in
the classroom. Whether you are in English, History, Science or Math class there is
always something for you to read. Books, articles, short stories, and many more fill
the agendas in our classes. There is no doubt that we are reading, but the question is
are we reading the material we need to be reading. The article The Importance of
Reading in Earnest stresses the importance of nonfiction. Nonfiction can be very
different from fiction, and how you read and comprehend nonfiction is different too.
The style that nonfiction tends to be written in is something that you have to... Show

By reading less and easier books these teenagers stopped challenging themselves,
and this lead to the decrease in comprehension. Reading is not like riding a bike.
We must continue to practice if we wish to remain good at it. Topping also points
out in his article how it seems that children do somewhat like nonfiction, but they
are not choosing to read as nonfiction books as fiction books. He then speculates
that the answer lies in the preferences of the teachers. An earlier study has shown
that girls have a preference works of fiction. This fact pared with the fact that the
majority of our teachers are women leads Topping to the conclusion that by
accident teachers have slowly moved away from nonfiction. Coleman and Job has
also marked the lack of nonfiction in the classroom. In fact, Coleman and Job claim
that out of what children read ninety percent is fiction. This figure may seem too
large to be true, but in the library of my school there are nineteen different sections
of the stacks that are available to be checked out. Only one section of those nineteen
consists of nonfiction literature. This is a real life example of how our schools are
placing more and more fiction into the hands of children. Works of fiction are great. I
love them and read them almost every day. There is nothing wrong with reading
fiction, but we must also read nonfiction. Reading nonfiction is important. It

Theodore Dreiser is an outstanding writer in American literary history .Writing in
naturalist style; he created a new era of American literature and influenced a good
many contemporary writers as well as his followers. Sister Carrie is regarded as the
masterpiece of Theodore Dreiser s writing skills in naturalist style. And this thesis

2. Naturalistic Environmental Factor for Carrie One outstanding feature of
naturalism is its stress on the influence of environment upon man s fate. According to
naturalism, man is a helpless pawn, at the mercy of the surrounding. For instance, in

Lawson Bates Research Paper
Fans of Bringing Up Bates know that Lawson has been working on his music
career. It turns out that Lawson is now working to start a country music career on
his own without the family. Lawson has relied on the family a lot, but he is
stepping out of his comfort zone. Fox News got the chance to talk to Lawson Bates
and find out what is going on with him. Lawson already has some music out there
and has been on reality television for four seasons now.

It s not me with the Bates family. It s make it or break it based off of my music

a lot of your heart. When I started singing country music I had to set my boundaries
and decide what I wanted to sing about. I won t sing something...that is contrary to
what I think is morally right.
This means that Lawson Bates won t be singing the typical country music. You are
used to hearing songs about drinking, cheating and other things that are not morally
right to him, and Lawson will be avoiding this music. There are a lot of country
songs that don t have to do with this stuff either, but it does make some people
wonder why he didn t decide to go into the gospel genre instead. Another thing that
Lawson Bates wants to do is use his music to inspire others. He shared his thoughts.

The Strong Character and Unavoidable Destiny of Oedipus...
The Strong Character and Unavoidable Destiny of Oedipus Rex
Oedipus the King, by Sophocles is about Oedipus, a man doomed by his fate. Like
most tragedies, Oedipus the King contains a tragic hero, a heroic figure unable to
escape his own doom. This tragic hero usually has a hamartia, a tragic flaw, which
causes his downfall. The tragic flaw that Sophocles gives Oedipus is hubris
(exaggerated pride or self confidence), which is what caused Oedipus to walk right
into the fate he sought to escape. Oedipus pride pushes him toward his tragic end in
the initial journey, when he kills his father, in the episode of the sphinx, and in his
adamant search for truth.
Pride like that of Oedipus has been the downfall of many great ... Show more content

This shows that he was so zealous that he thought he could avoid destiny. Also, in
trying to avoid his destiny, he got into an argument over a small right of way
incident. Had he just swallowed his pride and let the carriage have the right of way,
he could have avoided everything.
He showed his arrogance in the beginning of the story when he spoke to Teiresias.
He said:
When the dark singer, the sphinx, was in your country, did you speak word of
deliverance to its citizens? And yet the riddle s answer was no the province of a
chance comer. It was a prophet s task and plainly you had no such gift of prophecy
from birds nor otherwise from any Fod to glean a word of Knowledge. But I came,
Oedipus, who knew nothing, and I stopped her. I solved the riddle by my wit alone.
Mine was no knowledge got from birds (Pg. 27, 1.391 9).
Oedipus knew that even the most intelligent men of Thebes had been killed
attempting to answer the riddle. When he answered the riddle, he proved his
intelligence was superior to theirs. When Oedipus solved the riddle it was fuel for
his arrogance. He just became completely cavalier and even more self confident then
before. It was because of this that he was brought to a tragic end.
Even as the pieces of the puzzle were coming together and Oedipus was beginning to
learn of what had happened to him his inner colors were shining. When Jocasta, his
wife, knew that he
What Is Frightful Fields Essay
A gloomy, dark, broken, isolated, boring place was known as Frightful Fields.
There stood a land of no happiness where crickets chirp, owls hoot, cries, and
screams were heard. This place was a run down, rough, and dry city which no one
ever strolled on the grounds of. Rats ran on the streets and trash was thrown all
over the roads. The night glared at whoever was outside at anytime. The air always
had a smell of blood in it. Never was there any sun or color. In fact, the city was more
like a slaughterhouse. There were dead bodies in every alley. Scared people all
over the city prayed they would not get killed. People disappearing was quite
common in Frightful Fields. Most of the food here tasted tremendously like a sock.

Last Man Standing Feminist Theory
The show Last Man Standing is an American show about the Baxter family. Mike
Baxter and his wife, Vanessa, have three daughters, all of whom are living at
home. Mike, living with four females, is trying to maintain his masculinity. Within
episode nine of season one, a new couple moves into Mike and Vanessa s
neighbourhood. Vanessa meets Rebecca while out for a walk and invites her and
Charlie over for dinner. When Mike answers the door to see that Charlie is actually
a female, he is initially put off by the couple being lesbians. During the course of
dinner and conversation, Mike hits it off with Charlie and is impressed by the
similar interests they share. Mike and Charlie become pals and make plans to go
riding, while Vanessa and Rebecca go antiquing. After riding, the two come back to
Mike s to drink beer and watch the Broncos game. The two of them were throwing
jokes back and forth at one another, when Mike accidentally insults Charlie and she
goes home. Throughout this paper, I will be critically evaluating the show Last Man
Standing using queer theoryand feminist theory to illustrate how the themes of
heteronormativity and genderroles are evident in this particular episode.
Queer theory is based on the idea that heterosexuality is the norm, when in reality it
is just what some people believe is normal. It suggests that an individual s identity
does not determine who the individual is as a human being. Some people in society

Giant Sequoia trees, at ground level, are about 20 30 ft in diameter. Most trees in
the groves are about 1000 3000 years old. Giant Sequoias are felled by wind or

The Process Of Becoming A Veterinarian
Veterinarians do everything in their power to help animals and keep them healthy.
When becoming a veterinarian, one of the most important steps is to take appropriate
courses in high school. Mathematics, biology, physics, social sciences, chemistry and
at least one computer class will come in handy with future studies.
Communication is a very important tool in the veterinary world. It allows the Vet to
convey what is going on with a patient to the owner, and allows the owner to make
an informed decision on what steps to take next regarding the health of their pet.
Another important tool is workplace skills. In this field, observation is the first
sense used to asses an animals health, if there is anything visibly wrong, their mood,
and where the pain (if any) is located as well as being sensitive and careful not to
agitate the animal further. Terminology is a device used for communication as well
as classifying illnesses and injuries from the symptoms, and to let employees know

Impact Of The Gold Rush
Gold is the catalyst for numerous events that develop the American economy just
before the Civil War. Mankind appears to have a passionate, enduring, and daresay
destined obsession with gold and mineral wealth. A gold rush is a force of nature
that seems to shake up a culture just as much as an economy. This is evident
particularly in early to middle 1800 s America where there is already this grand ideal
that divine providence wills for a massive expansion of American territory. The
introduction of gold into this equation contributes exponentially to what is by this
time a borderline American Revolution in its own right. The American gold rush(or
rather the gold rushes) spawn an enormous migration movement that leads to several
lasting communities; many of which will eventually become states. The subsequent
surge in the country s economy stirs political and economic discussions nationwide,
and an American Middle Class continues to emerge in the rapidly changing
antebellum United States. Gold is the facilitator for all of these events (and more) as
the American economy grows just before the Civil War. The earliest noteworthy
gold discovery of the U.S. occurs in 1799 at what is today Reed s Gold Mine in
Cabarrus County, North Carolina. However, this rush is quickly overshadowed by
the Georgia gold rush of 1829. This rush stimulates a lot more national interest in the
prospecting of gold, and several people from all over the United States flock to the

Dramatic Ironry In O. Henry s Lamb To The Slaughter
Short stories are an exeptional use of literary elements to an audience of all ages.
Lamb to the Slaugher, by O. Henry, expresses many literary elements such as
imagery and dramatic irony. Gift of the Magi is also an amazing use with
foreshadowing and diction. Lamb to the Slaughter uses the elements better than Gift
of the Magi in many different ways, starting with it s precise characters. Lamb to the
slaughter expresses many literary elements, creating a story about Mary Maloney s
experience with her husband. Dramatic ironyis a very critical part of the story,
especially while evaluating the situation. Personally, I think it s right here on the
premises. Probably right under our very noses. What you think Jack? (Roald Dahl9).
She killed her husband with a frozen lamb leg after discussing troubling news that
was never revealed. Mary called the police, who were also her husband s coworkers.
The police never figured out what the weapon was or who killed him. Mary asked
them of a favor to eat the lambleg cooking in the oven, and the weapon was right
under their noses when they were eating. Additionally, the imagery really helps the
most crucial part of the story come alive. Mary walked up behind him and without
any pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down
as hard as she could on the back of his head(Roald Dahl 4). The text could have just
said she hit him with a lamb leg, but instead it elaborates and explains how it
happened.

their Lands End division which was in competition with L.L. Bean and Eddie Bauer
did little in the
way of resolving the problems. Also they have sold off their Sears Hometown as
well as Sears Outlet stores. One thing that I think could have been done to prevent the
problem
was that Sears should have never merged with K Mart. K Mart had declared
bankruptcy three years before and ended up closing a large number of stores.
Secondly, I think
that K marts problem lied with the way they tried to be competitive with the number
of stores they had over anything else. By this I mean that the company should have
followed
the strategy of Wal Mart and Target. Like I mentioned previously, Wal Mart focused
on small town stores and had distribution centers regionally located to those areas.
That
is one way they were able to offer such low prices since they did not have to spend
large sums of money to ship goods from one end of the country to the other. Target
Case Report of Swap Spreads, 2010 Essay example
The article Swap Spreads:2010 talks about a financial abnormity that the 30 year
swap spread has kept negative since late 2008 for a long time, and an arbitrage
opportunity based on the bet that LIBOR would never fall below equivalent
government bond interest rates.
Question1: Would you recommend that GIC do the bond/swap trade discussed in the
case? Why or why not?
The arbitrage portfolio is to enter into a 30 year LIBOR swap to pay fixed and
receive floating interest payment, to long a 30 year government bond, and to take
rolling short positions in 3 month T bills. In practice, the 3 month T bills are
replaced by taking a rolling short position of repos daily and entering into a 3 month

Finally, although the article says that the LIBOR OIS spread is little changed, it
cannot guarantee that the spread won t be volatile in the 30 year time.
To sum up, the trade is feasible, but there are still some things that need to be
concerned.
Question2: What would be the internal rate of return on the trade over 30 years?
Suppose there are no transaction cost, the value of government bonds does not
change very much, the notional amount is 1 billion US dollars.
The payment is delivered every 3 months, there are 120 deliveries in total. N=120.
Payment at time 0 is 1.5%*1,000,000,000= 15,000,000
Payment at each delivery time =[(3.875% 3.445%)+0.0025]*(1
/4)*1,000,000,000=1,700,000
Thus, the IRR=11.33%*4=45.32%
Question3: Why do you think the 30 year swap spreads are negative? What type of
financial institution would want to receive fixed versus paying LIBOR at these rates?
There are two reasons why the swap spread is negative. First of all, people are
more risky. The swap spread is the difference between LIBOR swap rate and
governmental bonds rate of the same horizon. So it can also been seen as the
premium at which large financial institutions can borrow. Investors now think
sovereign credits as riskier than highly rated corporates. Second, liquidity is very
low in the long end of swaps. The low liquidity is mainly driven by hedging of exotic
derivatives.

Essay About Pegasus
Pegasus is the winged horse of Greek mythology. The horse is usually white in
color, beautiful and is the symbol of strength, inspiration and flight. It was born
from the blood of Medusa (a lovely young maiden), when she was slain by Perseus
with his magical sword. The God of earth, Poseidon was Pegasus father.
Poseidon became infatuated with Medusa, he seduced her into the temple of Athena
(goddess of wisdom). Because of this, Athena became infuriated and took her anger
out on Medusa. She was so angry that she turned the maiden into a Gorgon, a
terrifying female creature with hairs of venomous snakes and whose glance will turn
a person to stone.
One day, the King Polydetes fell in love with Danae, a woman who had a young son

However, knowing that they were unbeatable, Bellerophon became proud and wanted

Olympus. Zeus was not happy with this and sent a gadfly to bite Pegasus which
caused him to fall to the ground. His attempt failed, and instead of becoming a god,
he became blind and crippled.
Pegasus, however, was honored by Zeus. The horse was given a special stable and
was allowed to fetch thunderbolts and lightning for Zeus. Pegasus later found a mate,
Euippe, and they had two offspring, Melanippe and Celeris. From this family came a
new race of winged horse. Although Pegasus was not immortal, Zeus transformed
him into a constellation on the last day where we can still see him today.

Tennessee Williams Masculinity
Tennessee Williams life and A Street Car Named Desire Tennessee Williams was

he was able to make the key inspiration of his plays. In A Street Car Named Desire

dependence on drugs, alcohol, and the kindness as well as the perceived cruelties
of friends and lovers (Eisen 861). Williams s problems can be traced back to one
thing, death. Williams lost his sister, father, grandfather, and lover during his life
time and did not take any of them very well. There is no worse pain in William s
world than that felt when looking back on life and feeling only emptiness (Skloot

Like Williams, Blanche has a similar journey. Blanche, like many of Williams s
protagonists, suffers from guilt over the disgust she expressed when she
discovered her young husband with another man. Her husband subsequently
committed suicide (Adler 7). Blanche is haunted by the death of her husband and
struggles with losing him. Blanche also lost more than just her husband. I took the
blows in my face and my body! All of those deaths! The long parade to the
graveyard! Father, Mother! Margaret (Mays 1785). Blanche obviously was
devastated with all the deaths she had to endure while her sister had left her and
moved away. Like Williams, Blanche starts increasing her use of alcohol. She is
seen many times in A Street Car Named Desire with heavy alcohol. Just water, baby,
to chase (whiskey)!

The representation of youths in A Clockwork Orange and If....
I will be investigating how youth is represented in the films A clockwork orange
(1972) and If.... (1968) and how the films affected the views of the time and how the
films influenced youths.
I have chosen to investigate these films because of how both films were released at
the time of the relaxation of violence in cinema.
I also chose these films because the similar themes in both films, as both films focus
on youths in society and there place in society, And also how Malcolm McDowells

One of the main things I that is important in both films are the costume, in both

Heart Of Darkness Damned Lies
Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics
In Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness, he explores the hypocritical and false nature of
colonialism. Throughout the novel, almost everyone but Marlow continually
describes colonialism as a noble endeavor, yet Marlow s experience while in the
Congo constantly and thoroughly disproves such claims.
The argument for colonialism centers on civilizing the natives and providing them
with a better, more human like life. The Company describes their endeavors as trade,
rather than outright theft, and civilizing the natives, rather than enslaving and killing
them. Marlow s aunt describes Belgian colonization of the Congo as weaning those
ignorant millions from their horrid ways, prompting Marlow to hint that the Company

Kurtz seems to be a great man before going to the Congo. He was a great musician
(Conrad, 71), a powerful orator, a potentially splendid leader of an extreme party ,
a great painter, or a universal genius (Conrad, 72). Everyone who did not know him
in the Congo or knew of what he did loved him and marveled at him. However,
after his time in the Congo, Kurtz fundamentally changes. He becomes the
embodiment of the Id: an aggressive, brutal figure expressing his most fundamental
desires. He decapitates natives and sticks their heads on spikes, facing them
towards him, almost in worship. He employs the natives in his quest for ivory,
turning them against their own kin. He becomes a god like leader of a native tribe,
acquires a native mistress, and even orders the attack on Marlow s riverboat to
prevent their arrival at the Inner Station, when he would have to leave his tribe and
the Congo. Through his methods, Kurtz represents an honest and true form of
colonialism. He is the most successful ivory trader the Company has, having
collected, bartered, swindled, or stolen more ivory than all the other agents together
(Conrad, 47). He does not claim to be civilizing the natives; in fact, he himself is
barbaric and uncivilized. He represents the pure, core version of colonialism and one
where brutality and inhumanity yield magnitudes more profit. Even the language
Conrad uses to describe Kurtz s craft is significant. He describes it first as collection
and bartering, but then as theft. Twice. Through Kurtz, who earns the Company
massive profits in ivory, Conrad depicts, essentially, the Id of
How Coffee Is Becoming Increasingly Popular And Trendy

Having worked in independent coffee establishments I recognised how the coffee
culture is becoming increasingly popular and trendy, coffee has become a worldwide
commodity and the demand for good artisan coffee is increasing year on year.

that I would require in excess of ВЈ25K in order to secure premises buy equipment
and cover the rent deposit and legal fees.

The Business/ Structure
The company will be called Deli Junction Coffee and it will run initially as a sole
trader business. I have chosen this business model as it is much simpler and less
expensive than setting up a limited company which has its own separate legal identity
and has more legal obligations to adhere to.
The business will sell gourmet artisan coffee from Alchemy Coffee Roasters. The
coffee will be mainly for take away although I have secured the outside area to the
front of the premises which belongs to the deli owner who has agreed that I can set
out tables and chairs. Deli Junction Coffee will also sell a selection of speciality teas
from Prince and Sons, award winning hot chocolate from Kokoa as well as vegan and
gluten free cake alongside non specialised cakes and pastries from a local baker.
We have agreed on a rent of ВЈ400 per calendar month inclusive with 2 months
deposit to be reviewed in 12months.

Shakespeare
Who was Shakespeare? Was he a man from Stratford Upon Avon who started with
little and became the greatest English author to ever live; or was he a privileged
Earl who was a favorite at Queen Elizabeth s court? That is the great mystery. This
particular mystery is difficult to solve because of the lack of documentary evidence.
The Elizabethans did not believe in getting everything in writing as people do today.
Therefore, the truth may never be known with certainty. However, evidence does
exist to support at least two theories about the Shakespearean authorship: one that the
man from Stratford wrote the works, the other that Edward de Vere the Earlof Oxford
was the author. The question then becomes, which ... Show more content on

He then searched for a man of the same time period who met these criteria (Ogburn).
The characteristics that come up again and again in the debates include: the author s
education and knowledge of the Classics, law, and Italy; and the documents and
poems of the time that have survived.
The most controversial and subjective argument stems from the apparent wealth of
knowledge possessed by the Shakespearean author. Throughout the plays and sonnets,
he makes numerous classical allusions. Oxfordians claim that the Shakespeare from
Stratford (usually referred to as Shakspere in the debates) could not have
possessed the necessary knowledge to draw upon these sources. Tom Bethell,
another noted Oxfordian, writes that Shakspere is not known to have attended
Stratford grammar school ... [and] if he was a pupil, he probably was not one for
long (Bethell). However, respected Stratfordian Irvin Matus argues that no records
of anyone attending the school exist before the 1800 s (Matus). He also notes that
Ben Jonson, a contemporary of Shakespeare s and a revered playwright, did not
have much more than a few years of rudimentary schooling and that there are no
attendance records for Jonson s school before 1715 (Matus). On his comprehensive
Stratfordian website, David Kathman asserts that Shakespeare s classical knowledge,
while impressive by our standards, was
Wind Turbines Essay
A wind turbine is a machine for converting the kinetic energy in wind into
mechanical energy . (1) The inventor of the first electric wind turbine was
Clevelander Charles Brush, who ran his entire Euclid Avenue mansion off of one for
20 years, which later made the cover of Scientific American in 1888. (2) Although
the use of alternate energy didn t rise a great deal afterward, this event did open the
eyes for many environmentalists. Wind poweris only one of our several energy
source[s] whose fuel is free and will never be exhausted (3) with the pros and cons
not completely weighed out as to whether it will be truly beneficial or not. The two
main issues regarding wind turbines are the environmental effects that they have and
the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The constructions of the turbines alone are creating an effect on these mammals
because of the frequency of noise that is emitted into the water. These frequencies
disrupt mammal communication, location and location of other species around them.
One other environmental factor regarding wind turbines, especially the wind farms,
is that erecting and maintaining wind turbines can also necessitate clearing land:
ridgeline installations often require a fair amount of deforestation, and then there s
the associated clearing for access roads, maintenance facilities, and the like . (7)
Although we are trying to help the environment by creating a safer and cleaner
source of energy, the actions of clearing our forests, and whatever ecosystem that
lived in that forest, in order to save the environment appears to be an oxymoron. But
there are also now a great many turbines situated on farmland, where the fields
around their bases are still actively farmed . (8)
The long term effects of this issue could be devastating if precautions are not taken.
Small rodents are known to find shelter at the base of the large wind turbines, luring
different bird species to wind farms causing a higher death rate for the birds. The
wind farms are also unfortunately located in the migration
Contrast of “Gilgamesh” and “The Flood”
Not doing suitably what you are advised to do, are human downfalls having no
recompense; whereas, following the rules on timely basis will be the most
worthwhile outcome. Contrasting the Benjamin R. Foster s and Stephen Mitchell s
translation Gilgamesh, to the Robert Altar s translation The Flood, each story has a
very different emphasis and draws a different moral. The emphasis of Gilgamesh,
becoming eternal and what steps can be taken to receive it. However, the emphasis
of The Flood is true righteousness will give a prolonged life. The different emphasis
of each story causes the moral of each story to be different. For instance, Gilgamesh

Noah does all that the Lord request of him; likewise, Noah proves himself to be as
the Lord has stated, righteous and blameless by building the ark in timely

different morals. The moral of Gilgamesh is doing what is advised without

virtue causing unforeseen blessings from the Lord. The translation of The Flood

Christian/Jewish, and Iroquois Indian civilizations. How they characterized the

The Greek civilization suggest the Gender gap as being of a more strategic
implication rather than a gender viewpoint. The male having dominance over
woman is a theme in Greek mythology, from sons allying with mothers to defeat the
fathers, to the rape of Persephone. As Homer and Hesiod describe Hera as being
second and subservient to her husband, using trickery to overcome Zeus plans.
Although the feminine does play an important role it is one of creation and
nurturing. Likewise, in the Genesis story, woman is created from man and is made
to give him aid. After they had eaten of the fruit from the tree of good and evil, God
was as a parent and correcting, or punishing the children. God said to Eve in Genesis
3:16 your desire will be for your husband and he shall rule over you.

These accusations are far from the truth. In my research I found that there are many

Change in Population of the Bahamas 1775-1789
Between 1775 and 1789 the population of the Bahamas increased substantially.
During this period the Treaty of Versailles returned the Bahamas territory to British
rule and Florida to Spanish rule. These events created an exodus of loyalists, seeking
sanctuary in the Bahamas as they evacuated Florida. Thus the majority of immigrants
to the Bahamascame from Florida, however this reduced in March 1785. New York
also provided Bahamas with 1000 refuges. Which is reflected in the instance where,
Sir Guy Carleton (Commander in chief of British forces in America) was notified that
four hundred New York refugees wanted to settle on Abaco. Another reason for
immigrationwas Advertisements published in gazettes repeatedly to lure migrants
to the Bahamas As of June 1788 the population of the Bahamas had reached 9300.
It has been predicted that 5000 7000 loyalists and slave refugees came to the
Bahamas during this time. From 1784 to early 1785 refugees arrived to the Bahamas
in an overwhelming scale. As of June 1788 the population of the Bahamas had
reached 9300.
Within this population increase Negros made up nearly two thirds of the population,
representing a majority on the Bahamas. This is illustrated in population of 11,300 in
1798 where Negros accounted for 8,000 of that statistic. Along with the immigration
of loyalists migrating to Barbados there was a significant amount of Negro
immigrants, many of who were free . In once instance, out of eight eight blacks

Mercantilist ideas emphasized that nations should strive toward economic self
sufficiency and that the power of a nation should be measured by the amount of its
gold and silver reserves. Ultimately, a nation should arrange to produce everything
it needed for its own citizens and sell surpluses to for hard currency. This metal
reserve, in turn, could be used in emergency situations to pay for wars or solve
shortages. Colonies, like those England had in North America, played an important
part in this economic equation. They could help England become self sufficient by
producing things that could not be made or grown there such as tobacco, sugar, and
tall masts for ships. Colonists could also provide a market for British goods,
particularly manufactured products, such as woolen cloth or beaver hats. This meant
that the home economy in England could become more fully developed, while the
colonial economies were relegated to a role of supplying raw materials. To insure
that the American colonies would contribute to this overall sense of British wealth,
various Navigation Acts were passed beginning in 1650 to regulate trade between the
colonies, England, and the rest of the world. In many cases, ships carrying American
products to other European countries had to stop in England first to pay duties before
continuing onward. Also, goods traveling to and from America had to be

Philosophy Essay.pdf

  • 1. Philosophy Essay Writing an essay on the topic of "Philosophy Essay" can be quite challenging. This subject matter delves into complex theories, abstract concepts, and deep philosophical inquiries that require a nuanced understanding and critical analysis. Crafting an essay on philosophy demands more than just regurgitating information; it necessitates profound contemplation, logical reasoning, and the ability to communicate intricate ideas effectively. The difficulty arises from the need to navigate through a myriad of philosophical perspectives, from ancient thinkers like Plato and Aristotle to modern philosophers such as Kant and Nietzsche. Each philosopher presents unique ideas and arguments, often challenging conventional wisdom and pushing the boundaries of human comprehension. As an essay writer, one must grapple with these diverse viewpoints, evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, and construct a coherent narrative that reflects a deep engagement with the subject matter. Moreover, philosophy is not confined to abstract theorizing but extends into various branches such as metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy, each posing its own set of questions and debates. Addressing these diverse branches requires a broad interdisciplinary approach, drawing insights from psychology, sociology, history, and other disciplines to enrich the analysis. Additionally, philosophical writing demands precision in language and clarity in expression. Given the abstract nature of philosophical concepts, conveying ideas in a concise and comprehensible manner is paramount. This requires careful consideration of terminology, logical structure, and rhetorical devices to ensure that the essay communicates complex ideas effectively to the reader. In summary, writing an essay on the topic of "Philosophy Essay" presents a formidable challenge, requiring a deep understanding of philosophical concepts, critical thinking skills, interdisciplinary knowledge, and effective communication abilities. • 2. Canadian Law Personal Statement As a child, I was asked the famous question, what would you like to be when you grow up? and I would always reply A Lawyer! Ten years later, I gradually began to understand what the word meant and the responsibilities behind it. Over the past decade, I have developed a desire to fight for the rights of the less privileged. I recall my dad reiterating a story from my childhood; my family and I were in traffic when a beggar approached our car to ask for alms. As a concerned girl, I asked my father to please give him some. Growing up in West Africa, this became an accepted phenomenon, seeing beggars on the road, impoverished families, and other disadvantaged individuals. Unfortunately, some of these people are in this situation because the society and the legal system failed them. The law tends to recognize those in power and the wealthy, and often disregards those in the lower class; although they are the most vulnerable and deserve to be protected by the law also. Life in Canadagave me a different perspective on the law. In Canada, the law is upheld, and the legal system does its best to protect the rights of Canadian citizens. I am aware now... I have faced challenges that I felt I was not qualified for, nevertheless I have realized with enough effort, determination and support, you can achieve anything. I believe I would benefit substantially from your Labour, Employment, and Social Justice stream. As mentioned earlier, I want to be a voice to those that are ignored by the legal system, and as a migrant woman who is also a racialized minority, I would be a distinct representation of those voices. I do anticipate the education and different skills I would acquire at Western Law, which would lead me closer to achieving my childhood dream of being an integral part of the justice

Significant Events Red Circle The SAB1 system was one of the first systems that red circle was implemented on. I served as a process engineering resource for the implementation team and monitored the controls as they were implemented to ensure that the process continued to run well. Several times, when a new control was turned on, it would not behave as expected or would uncover a problem that was not anticipated, as the system engineer, I worked to prevent them before they could cause a process upset or recognize and mitigate these problems as they were encountered. Using Kepner Tregoe problem solving techniques, I was able to quickly determine the root cause and extent of the problem minimizing the amount of off class. Improve Mixer and Turbo Operation Alarms were developed and added to the mixers that will alert operations when a mixer did not get all of its chemicals. This alarm has helped us detect failing valves. Additionally, the OH model was modified so that turbo temperatures are reduced when a turbo reaches OH set point. This has prevented small production upsets from getting worse due to over hydrolyzed dope. Solus Free Acid Root Cause Determination Worked on a team to determine why Solus had elevated levels of free acid after only a short time in storage. It was determined that the root cause is inherent to low viscosity esters and is not something that can be changed with different stabilization or new bags. Online Flashed Acid Supply Determined it is not a cost effective project Many yard tanks in building 120 are in need of major repair or replacement. Each yard tank costs approximately $3 million to replace. I investigated the potential of going to an online supply of flashed acid. This would allow yard tank 16 to be used in an alternate service and would reduce the number of yard tanks that need to be rebuilt. It was determined through dynamic modeling with the Advanced Controls Group that

  • 11. Power In Ancient Rome Ancient Rome was made up of 3 different classes of people. The plebeians, patricians, and the slaves. I will be talking about each one of these groups of people, how the government worked, the different positions in the government, how much power each class had, and how they got power. Also, The 2 types of government I will be talking about are the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. Patricians: The patricians were very wealthy. They owned land, had nice houses, and they had slaves work for them. The patricians also had the most power in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire. If you wanted to be a patrician as a plebeian, it would be very hard unless you changed your family affiliation. If you wanted to be a patrician, you had to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a very well known government because many countries use this type of Government too even today like the United States. The way this government was formed was in 509 BCE, the Romans took the Etruscans power. Before this, the Etruscans had ruled over the Romans. The Etruscans were another civilization in Ancient Italy at the time. Once they were free, they made a republic called The Roman Republic. Keep in mind, you should know that the government changed a lot in its time. The patricians pretty much had all the power early on in the Republic. The highest position in the Republic was held by the consuls, who were the rulers of the Roman Republic. A senate made up of patricians and the assemblies elected these people to become consuls. Plebeians pretty much had no say in the government at the time. Something that was common at the time was that only men could vote. This was true for the Roman Republic too. After a little while, the plebeians eventually got to vote for their representatives, called tribunes who got the power to change laws or ideas passed by the senate. While individual plebeians or roman citizens outside the patrician, and senatorial positions were able to get power by becoming wealthy and joining the equestrian class, their chances of joining the senatorial class were pretty low. If a plebeian has enough money, they could get into the equestrian class. As a group though, the plebeians were able to effect political and social change by forming a group and going against the people more powerful than them. For example, since there were so many plebeians, they could riot against the higher

The Maze Reflected In The Maze Runner By James Dashner Although some things in life can sound devastating and illogical, to consider that everything happens for a reason might change ones viewpoint on a problem. In The Maze Runner by James Dashner, some people have not considered that. Dashner writes about a boy named Thomas who finds himself in strange, vast maze that shifts its position everyday. He is accompanied by others (who call themselves Gladers) who, just like him, have no recollection of their past. After Thomas had spent one day in the maze, a girl is sent into the maze with a message that she is the last one ever. She is the only girl in the maze and things had started changing ever since she had been sent into the maze. Thomas struggles to solve the maze and finds out that the maze is some kind of experiment. Also, if proper procedures were taken into effect, the unveiling of the escrow syndicate fund would have led auditors, Ernst Ernst to take initiative action in investigating this fund. In addition the defrauded investors argue that if this mail rule was discovered then this would have led to the investigation of the escrow fund by the Midwest Stock Exchange and SEC, directing us to critical factor #4. Critical Factor #4 Investors alleged that the Midwest Stock Exchange failed to adequately investigate Nay s background before admitting his firm into membership; that Nay s past unethical conduct would have forced the exchange to deny his firm a membership application. Possibly putting a stop to the engaging in an escrow syndicate fraud. This is relevant because if the Midwest Stock Exchange had investigated Nay s background before allowing him membership in their firm, then Nay would not have been able to use the Stock Exchange as a back up in helping him get this fraudulent fund up and running. Also Ernst Ernst should have known through financial statements that Nay was in membership with a stock exchange firm. Questions: 1. • 17. Character Analysis Of Sketchy The journey of a lifetime starts with the turning of a page (Anders). This means that as a book is read new adventures come along as well as relationships with characters. The book Sketchy written by Olivia Samms has a very interesting and unique plot. The main character, Beatrice Washington, has just come out of rehab and is trying to stay drug free. She has also just moved to a new high school and is trying to get settled there. Although a setback to her goal occurs when Willa Prescott, a girl from the high school, is raped and left to die. Bea meets Willa in her art class and soon finds out she had a rare and strange ability. Bea has the power to draw what people are thinking. She had read Willa s mind and drawn the rapist, although Willa refused to admit that she remembered anything from the night she was raped. Bea has a new goal in mind; bring justice to Willa and the families of the other girls who had been murdered/raped. Only if she can convince the police to believe her, and have Willa agree to who the rapist was. When Charlie reviewed the book Sketchy on goodreads.com, she was very enthusiastic and rated the book very positively, focusing on characterdevelopment. Charlie is accurate in her assessment of the book because Beatrice is a very relatable character but is not the typical teenager which is portrayed in most books; she is more down to earth. Charlie left a positive review of the book, making many comments favoring the setup of character development. She makes a remark saying nothing is so over the top to make it unbelievable and by doing so, I believe a wide audience will be able to easily connect with the character . This helps support the idea that the build up of character development can help increase the overall plot. It does this because it states how Beatrice is a character portrayed as a rebellious teenager but it is not extremely stereotypical and this helps the reader be more related to the story and feel as if he/she could imagine themselves in this position. Charlie also notes that It adds a dimension that elevates a good story to a great story . This is referring to the way the characters and supporting characters help add another side to the story to hook the

Henry, expresses many literary elements such as imagery and dramatic irony. Gift of the Magi is also an amazing use with foreshadowing and diction. Lamb to the Slaughter uses the elements better than Gift of the Magi in many different ways, starting with it s precise characters. Lamb to the slaughter expresses many literary elements, creating a story about Mary Maloney s experience with her husband. Dramatic ironyis a very critical part of the story, especially while evaluating the situation. Personally, I think it s right here on the premises. Probably right under our very noses. What you think Jack? (Roald Dahl9). She killed her husband with a frozen lamb leg after discussing troubling news that was never revealed. Mary called the police, who were also her husband s coworkers. The police never figured out what the weapon was or who killed him. Mary asked them of a favor to eat the lambleg cooking in the oven, and the weapon was right under their noses when they were eating. Additionally, the imagery really helps the most crucial part of the story come alive. Mary walked up behind him and without any pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head(Roald Dahl 4). The text could have just said she hit him with a lamb leg, but instead it elaborates and explains how it happened.

I will be discussing the successful union of Heinz Corporation, Berkshire Hathaway/3G and Kraft foods. In addition I will be writing about the unsuccessful merger of K mart Corporation and Sears. I feel that the success and failure of these mergers are important because they involve the future of products that consumers purchase every day and have related to for most of their lives. In fact, Sears has seen a consistent drop in revenue since 2011 and overall sales have be down since 2006. Even selling off their Lands End division which was in competition with L.L. One thing that I think could have been done to prevent the problem was that Sears should have never merged with K Mart. K Mart had declared bankruptcy three years before and ended up closing a large number of stores. Secondly, I think that K marts problem lied with the way they tried to be competitive with the number of stores they had over anything else. By this I mean that the company should have followed the strategy of Wal Mart and Target. Like I mentioned previously, Wal Mart focused on small town stores and had distribution centers regionally located to those areas. That is one way they were able to offer such low prices since they did not have to spend large sums of money to ship goods from one end of the country to the other. Target

Case Report of Swap Spreads, 2010 Essay example The article Swap Spreads:2010 talks about a financial abnormity that the 30 year swap spread has kept negative since late 2008 for a long time, and an arbitrage opportunity based on the bet that LIBOR would never fall below equivalent government bond interest rates. Question1: Would you recommend that GIC do the bond/swap trade discussed in the case? Why or why not? The arbitrage portfolio is to enter into a 30 year LIBOR swap to pay fixed and receive floating interest payment, to long a 30 year government bond, and to take rolling short positions in 3 month T bills. Suppose there are no transaction cost, the value of government bonds does not change very much, the notional amount is 1 billion US dollars. The payment is delivered every 3 months, there are 120 deliveries in total. N=120. What type of financial institution would want to receive fixed versus paying LIBOR at these rates? There are two reasons why the swap spread is negative. First of all, people are more risky. The swap spread is the difference between LIBOR swap rate and governmental bonds rate of the same horizon. So it can also been seen as the premium at which large financial institutions can borrow. Investors now think sovereign credits as riskier than highly rated corporates. Second, liquidity is very low in the long end of swaps. The low liquidity is mainly driven by hedging of exotic derivatives. Pension funds would be

Everyone who did not know him in the Congo or knew of what he did loved him and marveled at him. However, after his time in the Congo, Kurtz fundamentally changes. He becomes the embodiment of the Id: an aggressive, brutal figure expressing his most fundamental desires. He decapitates natives and sticks their heads on spikes, facing them towards him, almost in worship. He employs the natives in his quest for ivory, turning them against their own kin. He becomes a god like leader of a native tribe, acquires a native mistress, and even orders the attack on Marlow s riverboat to prevent their arrival at the Inner Station, when he would have to leave his tribe and the Congo. Through his methods, Kurtz represents an honest and true form of colonialism. He is the most successful ivory trader the Company has, having collected, bartered, swindled, or stolen more ivory than all the other agents together (Conrad, 47). He does not claim to be civilizing the natives; in fact, he himself is barbaric and uncivilized. He represents the pure, core version of colonialism and one where brutality and inhumanity yield magnitudes more profit. Even the language Conrad uses to describe Kurtz s craft is significant. He describes it first as collection and bartering, but then as theft. Twice. Through Kurtz, who earns the Company massive profits in ivory, Conrad depicts, essentially, the Id of

This metal reserve, in turn, could be used in emergency situations to pay for wars or solve shortages. Colonies, like those England had in North America, played an important part in this economic equation. They could help England become self sufficient by producing things that could not be made or grown there such as tobacco, sugar, and tall masts for ships. Colonists could also provide a market for British goods, particularly manufactured products, such as woolen cloth or beaver hats. This meant that the home economy in England could become more fully developed, while the colonial economies were relegated to a role of supplying raw materials. To insure that the American colonies would contribute to this overall sense of British wealth, various Navigation Acts were passed beginning in 1650 to regulate trade between the colonies, England, and the rest of the world.
