The Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) is a tool to measure and describe reading performance. It was developed to assess reading levels using graded passages and inform reading instruction. The revised version aligns with K-12 curriculum. Phil-IRI includes group screening tests, individual assessments, administration manuals, and forms to record results. Teachers can download the complete manual and administer screening tests in 30 minutes.

What is Phil-IRI?
Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) was created to
provide classroom teachers a tool for:
a. Measuring and describing reading performance.
b. Assessing and determining reading levels using graded passages.
c. Providing approximation of learner’s abilities correlated with other
reliable tools of assessment.

What’s new about it?
The Revised Phil-IRI is now designed to align all assessment
procedures with the K to 12 Curriculum.
With the constructivist approach of delivery in learning areas
both from English and Filipino between grades 1 and 2 during
introduction of reading competencies.

it?
The Phil-IRI Group Screening Test can tell whether students
are reading at, above, or below their grade levels.
The Phil-IRI Graded Passages for Individual Assessment can
be used to assess students’ Oral Reading, Silent Reading Comprehension
and/or Listening Comprehension Levels.
a. Oral Reading – describe decoding & word recognition along with
fluency & comprehension.
b. Silent Reading – describe reading speed & comprehension.

• Phil-IRI GST takes approximately 30 minutes
• Filipino and English subject teachers for grades 3 to 6 can administer
Phil-IRI GST, ELLN-trained teacher can administer Phil-IRI Graded
Passages to individual students who need further assessment.
• The Phil-IRI materials is available for download in the Learning
Resource Management & Development System (LRMDS) Portal.
Reproduction & distribution are under the School’s MOOE funds.

Phil-IRI Testing Kit
1. Manual of Administration
– Information regarding Phil-IRI, directions for administration of the test, instructions for
recording & reporting results.
2. Phil-IRI Group Screening Test
– Paper-pencil test for English & Filipino, composed of a 20-item comprehension test based on
leveled passages for each grade level.
3. Phil-IRI Graded Passages (Sets A, B, C, & D)
– Informal individualized assessment tool that measures student performance in oral reading,
silent reading and/or listening comprehension.
4. Phil-IRI Forms
– Phil-IRI Forms 1 to 4 will be used distinctively depending on the type of assessment is being
administered. Each stage in Phil-IRI has a specified Phil-IRI Form which will be the recording tool
for reporting the School Reading Profile, Class Reading Profile and Learner’s Reading Profile.
