4. GENRE
Autobiographical graphic novel is broadly used the term
graphic memoir which is relatively new and has not had
wide usage. Hearing the phrase ‘graphic memoir’ is
partially self- explanatory in that a memoir is an author’s
account of personal experiences. One of the easiest way
to describe a graphic memoir is to say it a memoir
written and illustrated using the same general format
found inb a graphic novel. In short, both the words and
the pictures are crucial to telling the story. Moreover, a
graphic memoir would be considered a subcategory of
graphic non-fiction.
5. TIME AND MILIEU
This graphic novel is the early
1990s in Moscow, and political
change is in the air and set amid
the disintegration of the Soviet
union.

has to deal with difficult situations and
making mature decisions while is away for

fascinating and heartfelt.

share her life with the readers. This is a
sentimental and bitter sweet graphic novel with
great descriptive illustrations. A lovely portrayal

engaging tween girl from the other side of the
world.
11. EMOTIONAL VALUE
Dasha’s illustrations are so conventionally
beautiful, and the way she construct a
conversation on the page is just so
charming it hurts. The story is fairly
straight-forward tale of coming –of-age,
loneliness and isolation are complicated
but very relatable.
12. PERMANENCE
Though the appearance of the novel itself
looks like childish, as it features several
simplistic drawings to accompany the

depth to the story about the struggles of a
young girl adjusting and adjusting again to
the changes in her life.
13. UNIVERSALITY
Young people all over the world have similar
issues and problems like those experienced by
ypoung Dasha. She also shows how relatable
her story is too, because she finds the right
balance of hers and ours. Furthermore, it is
fictional itself at times and there is a
universal experience of growing up.
