accepted and maintained
Heterosexual behaviour is not permitted
before marriage.
Divorce is not possible but queridas /
mistresses is widespread.

 Parental approval of the marriage partner.
 Filipinos attitude emphasize control rather than inhibitions.
(prohibiting being alone with the opposite sex)
 There is a considerable tolerance of individual differences, and an
attempt at enforcement of expectations by many forms…

 Filipino is found to be skilful as anyone
in devising ways to evade society’s
expectations and controls.
Uses finely developed skills to gain
exceptions; exceptions become linked
with status, it will then prove his status
by avoiding a procedure which others
are compelled to follow.

Advising is a powerful form of control.
Appreciates in a form of being helpful
Adviser should present the difference
between a criticism and an advice.

 Quarrels within the family are concealed,
because family conflicts are deemed a disgrace.
 This “protection” expresses a level of family
solidarity
 It is reminded that what he does reflects on his
family.
Changing Philippines, Changing Filipinos
 Change exists as a result of education (formal or informal).
 Filipinos are affected by different forms of media, influx of
different foreign influences.
 Split –level personality of Filipinos
Philippine Culture and the American Visitor
 Ningas Cogon; enthusiasm quickly fades.
 Poorly developed sense of public
responsibility (forests are destroyed,
dynamite fishing is rampant…)
 Bayanihan is no longer working due to
severe want and poverty; it no longer
produce cooperation but rather seem to
encourage indifference and greed.
Objectives
Predict reactions;
Infer the goals for which they are striving;
Able to achieve acceptance & understanding
of values in the midst of diversity.

Individual freedom and family control  Filipino is found to be skilful as anyone in devising ways to evade society’s expectations and controls. Uses finely developed skills to gain exceptions; exceptions become linked with status, it will then prove his status by avoiding a procedure which others are compelled to follow.

  2. In spite of Filipino values on humility and modesty… Filipinos value power/ positions in the society It is essential to determine the beginnings of a relationship.

A contributing factor is our being “Family Centeredness” where in an official cannot deny the demands of his / her kin for exceptions or privileges. Even working as a staff or secretary of a public servant seems to be so important for us to recognized such position…
  5. 3. Confrontations is controlled in an oblique fashion, fear of criticism is avoided. Misinterpretations of statements is experienced due to our sensitivity towards criticism. Just like from a certain novelist who mentioned Manila in his novel… Filipinos reacted Desperate housewives scenes about Filipino doctors.

Filipinos will not recognized success as a result to their effort or talents, success is seen commonly by most Filipinos as pure Luck or it is God’s will … Optimistic fatalism- Filipinos thinks that smiling and hoping for positive as the proper reaction to a situation which is beyond one’s control, just like the recent calamities we experienced. Success should be shared with those less fortunate- those received success or comfortable life will feel responsible on sharing these success to those less fortunate, we feel that these success will be taken away once greed exists. The rural family believes that misfortune will come to a selfish or thoughtless neighbour… Karma
  7. What exists in Filipino society is very intriguing as presented in the book.
  8. Advising is a powerful form of control in the Philippines, we appreciate is as a form of help. And as an adviser we present the difference between criticism and an advice, since Filipinos are not fond of criticism.
  9. As described in Zialcita’s book Authentic though not exotic that it answers the questions as to what is the true identity of Filipinos since most of what we expressed now seems to be a borrowed culture results from different influences. It expressed that although it may appear quite westernized there remains a core of Filipino values or identity which makes it different from that culture
