Welcome to thePharmacy Technician Program’s Online Orientation • This online orientation will take you through important information about the Pharmacy Technician Program. • How to use this orientation • The progress through the orientation is at your own pace. • There are references to materials found in the Orientation Section of the DCC Pharmacy Technician Program Blackboard site. • There are also references to your Policy and Procedure Manual you received at the in-person Orientation. - 4. Program Accreditation andStandards The Delgado Community College Pharmacy Technician Program is accredited by the American Society of Health- System Pharmacists (ASHP). The program was first accredited in 2003. At that time, there were less than 75 accredited programs, there are now more than 260. In the state of LA, DCC’s Pharm Tech program is one of 5 accredited programs. Accreditation is a process that ensures a minimum standard is being observed. ASHP accreditation provides the public, our students and our pharmacy partners the knowledge of our standards . This provides all interested parties a certain expectation of competency. *There is a list of program standards posted the DCC Pharmacy Technician Program site in Blackboard.
- 5. FACULTY Miss LaVance hasbeen a pharmacy technician for over 15 years. She has a BS from the University of Arizona and a Certificate of Pharmacy Technology from Pima Community College. Miss LaVance started her college education at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. She has experience in Retail, Compounding and Hospital Pharmacy. Miss LaVance was an IV technician at Northwest Medical Center. Her responsibilities included preparing TPN’s and Chemotherapy. While at NMC, Miss LaVance also worked as the “overnight” tech, where she was the only Technician working with 1 pharmacist to cover the entire hospital. Miss LaVance began teaching Pharmacy Technicians in Spring 2001. But she had already been involved in training in other inudstries for over 17 years. In 2003 Miss LaVance came to Delgado Community College as an Instructor - responsible for teaching Sterile Products and Labs for both Sterile Products and Pharmacy Practice. In 2004, she was promoted to Program Director. Currently Miss LaVance holds the rank of Assistant Professor at Delgado. She is active in many Pharmacy associations. In February 2014 she was named Chair to the Pharmacy Technician Committee for LSHP’s Executive Board; in April, she was invited to be a member of the newly formed Editorial Board for the Journal of Pharmacy Technology, and was recently voted as the President-Elect for the Pharmacy Technician Educators Council. - 6. FACULTY Miss LaRoche’ hasbeen a Pharmacy Technician for 9 years. She began her training here at Delgado in this program. Miss LaRoche’ has experience in hospital and retail. She continues to work in Retail in addition to teaching several courses both in-program and Allied Health courses. Miss LaRoche’ has a Certificate in Pharmacy Technician, an Associate of Science degree, and is a certified First Responder – all from Delgado. She continues to work toward her BS. Miss LaRoche’ joined the teaching staff in Spring 2008, and is considered the Primary Instructor for the course. She teaches PHAR 109, PHAR 116, PHAR 102, and PHAR 120. - 7. FACULTY – LabInstructors Jeannette Rodriguez, CPhT jrodri1@dcc.edu Miss Rodriguez has been a Pharmacy Technician for 10 years. Her area of specialty is Hospital Pharmacy, working as an IV and Chemo Tech. Miss Rodriguez completed the Delgado Pharmacy Technician program. Miss Rodriguez has been teaching lab for the program since 2007. She teaches the Sterile Products Laboratory and sections of Pharmacy Practice Laboratory. Mrs. Owens is also a graduate of the Delgado Pharmacy Technician Program. She has been a Technician for nearly 10 years. Mrs. Owens continues to work at the hospital where she completed her Clinical Training. Mrs. Owens has a BA from Southeastern. Mrs. Owens joined the staff at Delgado in 2009. She teaches Pharmacy Practice Laboratory and Introduction to Pharmacy. She has a certificate in Sterile Products from NPTA. Erin Owens, BA, CPhT eowens@dcc.edu

- 10. Uniform Standards Pg.23-24 Handbook Students are not allowed to attend classes or clinical rotation out of uniform. Student will wear DCC identification at all times. Student may wear nametag on a lanyard or attach to top with a clip. Jewelry: A watch may be worn. Small post earrings for pierced ears may be worn with the uniform. Students can wear no more than one earring per earlobe. Jewelry inserted in any other visible piercing will not be allowed. A wedding set may be worn. Excessive jewelry will not be allowed. No hanging necklaces or chains are allowed. Jackets Only dark green scrub jackets may be worn over the uniform for warmth. Tattoos All tattoos should be covered

Health Forms *Healthforms are posted to Blackboard • All Allied Health Program students are required to complete a Physical examination prior to the start of program. • In addition to the physical exam, the student is required to have verification of the following: • Negative TB test within the 1 year of program entry • Positive titers for MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) and Varicella (Chicken pox) – titers verify that there are active antibodies to these diseases. A vaccination record does not meet this requirement (unless the vaccine was received within the previous 2 years). • Proof of Hepatitis B vaccine series (complete, in-progress, or scheduled to begin within 2 weeks of program start date) – please complete the Hep B Verification Form in addition to your healthcare provider completing the immunization addendum • Current Tetanus vaccine • Influenza vaccine (Sept – April) Pg 49-50

Drug Testing • Allprogram students are required to submit to a Drug Screen as a condition to program acceptance. • You will need to provide a signature for 2 documents: • Student Consent to Drug Testing – This explains the College policy on drug and alcohol testing • HIPAA Authorization - this gives authorization for the results of PHI (protected health information); including but not limited to drug testing, vaccination and health screenings to the program administration and other related parties (clinical affiliate sites) These forms are located in the orientation section of the DCC Pharm Tech Site Drug Testing Location: ScreenNow 2714 Canal Street (near S Broad) New Orleans, LA (504) 309-2104 Cost $25 Form to bring to testing location is posted to Blackboard under “Drug Testing” Pg 48

- 19. Attendance • Attendance inyour program classes is VITAL to your success. • Please review the College Attendance Policy (posted in the Orientation section of the DCC Pharmacy Technician Site) and Complete the online Attendance Policy verification form. • Program Attendance policy will be reviewed in each class and be provided on each syllabus. • It is the students responsibility to their instructor(s) if they will miss class. Please provide a reason for the absence. One instructor will not “pass on” the information – contact all instructors. • Students should contact the instructor 1 hour prior to the start of class to be CONSIDERED an excused absence*. • Contact must be made no less than 15 minutes before class or the absence will automatically be counted as no call/no show. • It is the STUDENTS responsibility to get missed work. *ONLY in the case an excused absence - the instructor MIGHT provide the student with missed notes/worksheets (which may not be eligible for a grading). • There will be NO make up of tests or quizzes, or acceptance of late assignments due to an absence.

Introduction to thePolicy & Procedures Manual • The Policies and Procedures Manual is a reference for you to use throughout the program. • The information in the manual includes an Introduction, College Mission, Program Philosophy, Objectives of the Program, Program Goals • Also you will find the Pharmacy Technician Code of Ethics • Faculty contact information is provided on pg 13 • The following slides will cover the Manual starting with Academic Standards (pg. 18)

Academic Standards • Studentsaccepted to the Pharmacy Technician Program are required to have a 2.0 GPA • They are expected to maintain a 2.0 GPA in each course • Students must successfully complete ALL competencies • More information on competencies is provided on the next slide • Grading: • Traditional 10 point grading scale: PHAR 102, 104, 116, and 110 • 8 Point grading scale: PHAR 106, 112, 120, 151, and 152 • 8 point scale requires a course grade of 75 to pass the course • Final Exam Scores – ALL courses that have a Final Exam require a score of 70% or higher on the Final Exam to pass the course (no matter the course average grade) Pg 18

Definition and Explanationof Competencies • Competency is the ability to do a job properly. • In a traditional lecture based course, competencies are most often confirmed through testing. • In a lab based course, or on a clinical site, traditional testing methods are not an accurate assessment of the students ability to “DO” the “job” or a specific task. • Competencies in a lab course can be accomplished by the student successfully completing a task within a specific activity or during a lab practical. • Not all lab competencies can be tested during a practical exam; many are completed during lab activities. It is IMPERIATIVE that you attend all scheduled labs so that you do not miss a competency. • Any competency not completed satisfactorily will result in failure of the entire lab course. Passing is not solely dependent on the number or letter Grade.

Unsuccessful completion ofCourse Work • A Student who is not successful in completing 1 course (due to failure or withdrawal to prevent failure) will be given the opportunity to retake the course in the next semester it is offered. • Student is required to meet with the program director to discuss an action plan. • A Student not successful in 2 courses – Not within the same semester: • Student will be allowed to continue in program sequence and repeat the course. • Student is place on program probation pending successful completion of the course • Student is required to meet with the program director to discuss an action plan Pg 19-20

Unsuccessful completion ofCourse Work • A Student not successful in 2 or more courses in the same semester: • Student is placed on program probation. • Student is required to meet with the program director. • Student is required to present their case to the Probationary Review Committee to be allowed to continue in sequence. (This may be written or face-to-face) • One of three things will result from the student appeal 1. Student will be allowed to continue in sequence and remain on probation 2. Student will be suspended from program for 1 semester and advised to complete additional courses deemed by the Committee to be beneficial to aid the student in successful completion of courses on returning to program 3. Student will be Dismissed from program Pg 19-20

Withdrawal from Program •A student may find need to withdraw from program for many reasons • Financial • Personal • To prevent failure • If the student is in good standing (not on probation / passing all course work at time of withdrawal) • Student can re-enter the next semester courses are offered • Re-entry to second semester may depend on current enrollment and availability of clinical sites • Students who withdraw to prevent failure before the completion of the 1st semester would need to re-apply and they would be considered a new applicant. - 27. Re-entry • Students wishingto re-enter program, either after voluntarily withdrawing or after suspension, will be required to make their intention to return verbally to the program director. At that time, they may be instructed to submit a statement in writing requesting re- admission. • Re-entry will be dependent upon the previously mentioned criteria. Pg 19-20
- 28. Professional Ethics andConduct • While in program, students are expected to behave in a professional manner. We want to remind you that you will be in uniform and representing not only the Pharmacy Technician Program, but Delgado Community College. • Please review the content in the Policy and Procedure Manual on Professional Ethics and Conduct. - 29. Academic Calendar /Holidays/Closing The program begins each semester. You are starting Summer 2014 which means you will be attending for the Summer and Fall semesters (and it means you will graduate in December!). Please review the information in the Policy Procedure Manual. Pg 26-28
- 30. Louisiana Board ofPharmacy www.labp.com • The Louisiana Board of Pharmacy (LABP) has requirements for any person wishing to become a Pharmacy Technician in the state of Louisiana. 1. Obtain a Pharmacy Technician Candidate Registration 2. Complete 600 training hours 3. Apply for Pharmacy Technician Registration • During the first few weeks of your first semester, we will start the process for applying for the Candidate Permit. ($25) • For your application you will need: • Copy of birth certificate, passport, or naturalization papers • Copy of Social Security Card • Copy of High School Diploma, Education Equivalency Diploma, University Degree or High School/University transcript (official) • Miss LaVance will collect all student applications and mail them to the LABP at one time • The LABP will process your application and send you a packet which contains information and cards to process your fingerprints and background check. (approx. $45) • Miss LaVance will also collect all of the fingerprint cards/information and mail them to the LABP. *The background check is run through the LA State Police and the FBI Pg 29
- 31. Certification www.ptcb.org The LABPrequires all Candidates to obtain certification through an exam administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). The exam is known as the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE). PHAR 120 – Professional Practice is a course designed to prepare you to take the PTCE. You are required to take the exam before completion of program. Most students will register to take the exam during the traditional final exam week of their last semester. Once a student is successful in passing the PTCE, they earn the designation as a “Certified Pharmacy Technician” or a “CPhT” Pg 30

DCC & ProgramDisciplinary Policies • College Student Judicial Code is extracted from the Policy in the College’s Student Handbook. • This information not only outlines the College Policy pertaining to Student Rights, Student Responsibilities, and Academic Dishonesty, but also Due Process/Judicial Procedures • In addition to the College policy, program policy includes additional areas. • Violation of Program policies MAY result in a student being dismissed from Program, but the student may be allowed to complete the current semester. (Exception: violation of policies pertaining to clinical rotations) Pg 32-43 Pg 44

Health and MedicalCare • Students are required to have their own health insurance. • Please complete the Insurance Verification Form found in the Orientation section of the DCC Program Blackboard site. - 34. Organizational Chart Occasionally astudent will have a issue/situation that they feel is not being addressed. It is important to follow the proper hierarchy to resolve any issues. A student should discuss the issue/situation with the other party that is directly involved. Ex. A challenge with a grade should be discussed with the instructor for that course. If the student is not satisfied with the result of that interaction, they may contact the program director to discuss the issue/situation. Only after the parties listed on the Organizational Chart have been contacted in the appropriate order, should the student seek to resolve any unsettled issue/situation through the College Grievance pathway. Student Program Contract •Now that you have reviewed the Policy and Procedure Manual, you will need to complete the “Program Contract” to acknowledge you understand the policies and procedures covered in the manual. • This form is found in the Orientation section of the DCC Program Blackboard site. • Please complete and submit prior to the first day of class. Emergency Statement Every AlliedHealth Program is required to have an Emergency Statement/Plan and ensure students are aware of the plan, the college/program responsibilities and the student’s responsibilities. Please read the Emergency Plan posted on the DCC Program Blackboard site and sign and return the Student Signature form.
- 38. Classroom To maintain anenvironment conducive to learning there are some things to keep in mind: NO Cell phones allowed. Please turn them off. NO Food allowed in the classroom ONLY Bottled water (sealable) allowed. NO take-out cups.
