Editor's Notes

  1. Christine: Very Strong Demand Among the Fastest Growing Healthcare Occupations in California Predicted to grow by 25 – 35% through 2018 (28% growth in Orange County) About 29,000 people work as Pharmacy Techs in California Expect 9,600 new positions statewide in the next 6 to 8 years
  2. Verej: Why are Pharmacy Technician Careers Growing? Research and Development of drugs will never stop. The increase of research and development in pharmaceutical companies and adding pharmaceuticals to existing markets like cosmetics and biotechnology is part of the reason for the growth of the Pharmacy Technician career. (Show the three PDRs. ) Every year new drugs are being released by the Food&Drug Administration (FDA) Pharmacy technicians are becoming vital to the health care team. Aging population – Our population is aging and in correlation with that, the need of medications and health care is also increasing. Job Growth – The California Employment Development Department projects that Pharmacy Technician Job growth will add 50,000 additional jobs by 2018. Again, that is only in California. 2 Technicians per Pharmacist - It is the general practice for most retail pharmacies to have 2 pharmacy technicians per Pharmacist on duty. That means if there are two pharmacists on duty, there will most times be 4 pharmacy technicians in the pharmacy. New Jobs Created by increased use of Technology -- There are over 20 new job titles in the Pharmacy Tech scope of practice since I started in Pharmacy Tech career 12 years ago. I’ll show you some of those in a minute. By combining pharmacy and computers and technology – the field needs smarter, more computer savvy pharmacy techs to fill the new jobs.

  4. Christine: First off, let’s talk a bit about the job of the pharmacy technician? What is going on behind the counter? Why does it take 15 minutes to fill my prescription? Here’s why: RESPONSIBILITIES. You need to make absolutely sure the proper medicine is being given to the patient because it can mean life or death! And you have to remember that your customers are people who are relying on you all the time. CHRISTINE: PEOPLE – CUSTOMERS CHRISTINE: Before I move to the next slide, let me ask you a question – Do you know how many different pharmacy fields pharmacy technicians can work? (wait for answers from the audience)
  5. Christine: You need to have the proper technical skills and knowledge to be a Pharmacy Technician. So let’s go back to the question of why it takes 15 minutes to fill a prescription. You have a lot of responsibilities: You take the prescription from the customer or print from the computer. You need to find the correct medication Type the prescription into the computer Add their insurance or check on their insurance Fill the prescription accurately Give to the pharmacist to check for quality assurance. All of these things happen to be sure that you and your loved ones get the accurate medication. Medications are not vitamins… the wrong dosage or the wrong medication can cause complications.
  6. Christine: In addition, you’re responsible for inventory - you order medications every night if you don’t have them in stock. You’re also responsible for keeping the pharmacy clean.
  7. Christine: In addition, you’re responsible for inventory - you order medications every night if you don’t have them in stock. You’re also responsible for keeping the pharmacy clean.
  8. CHRISTINE: Pharmacy Tech Job Types: What’s great about the pharmacy technician profession is you have many Pharmacy settings you can choose from. You’re not limited to a specific setting. Your success will depend on you finding the right fit and environment for your own personality, so can use your own personal skills and strengths. RETAIL: Retail is the largest pharmacy technician setting that we have. You start as a Pharmacy Technician, when you have enough experience, and hours in the pharmacy, you can be promoted to Lead Pharmacy Tech or Inventory Specialist. If you are people friendly, and have a helpful nature, this is the place you want to work. CLOSED DOOR PHARMACY: Closed Door Pharmacy is providing pharmacy services to nursing homes, assisted living, senior health care centers, Rehabilitation centers, Hospice care for (cancer, HIV patients) This also includes “Home Health Care” which means you don’t have any customer contact. You can work as a pharmacy technician, Lead technician, Inventory Specialists (also known as Purchasers) COMPOUNDING: If you like mixing – this is the place you want to be. Did you know that some prescriptions are custom made for special patients? They have different medication strength in each lotion, or cough medicine, or anti-aging creams, hormone creams, capsules… many different things. A compounding pharmacy is good for people who are detail oriented, focused and want minimal customer interaction. VEREJ: INSURANCE: With health care industry growing, the demand for pharmacy technicians in insurance company w/knowledge of brand and generic medication is increasing. You’ll be in contact with nurses, physicians, pharmacy technicians like yourself, pharmacists and most importantly, the patients. (1) Customer Service Representatives: You must have good communication skills. (2) Pharmacy Audit Representatives: Good math and pharmacy calculation skills are essential. (3) Prior-authorization Pharmacy Technician – work with physicians to approve non-formulary medication based on patient need. In Insurance, a rapidly emerging job is: PBM – Pharmacy Benefit Management – MAIL ORDER: Mail order is a fast paced work environment with orders coming by computer transaction directly from the physician’s office. There is no communication involved with you and the customer. You are preparing computer orders, fax orders and phone orders for mailing to customers. If you are a punctual and detail oriented person, this may be the right work environment for you. HOSPITALS: With advanced training, you can be working as clinical pharmacy technician in a hospital setting. The benefit of working in hospital setting, it pays more, better benefits and more clinical experience. You’re part of the clinical team that works closely with the nursing staff, physicians and other health care providers. You have to be professional, efficient and ethical.
  9. Verej: So let’s talk about where the jobs are. Approximately 70% of pharmacy techs work in Retail settings – whether it be a Pharmacy like CVS, Walgreens, Rite-Aid, a local pharmacy, or one in a general merchandise store like Target, Wal-Mart or Costco, , or one in a grocery store, like Vons or Ralphs.
  10. Christine: Here is an sample of a pharmacy technician career path. You begin with a training like ours – our Pharmacy Tech TRAINING Then you will have your Pharmacy Tech Retail/Community Pharmacy Externship We will help you apply for your LICENSING. Then you’re going to work for awhile – and if you’re interested to grow further, you’ll consider advancing in your career, you want to move onto hospital/clinical settings and higher paying jobs. The great news is that our combined training program with the additional 80 hours in inpatient and sterile products training prepares you to work in clinical settings, so there’s no need to interrupt your work to come back to school. You can become a Lead Pharmacy Technician. You can teach, like Verej and I do. Or become a program director for a Pharm Tech school. You can work in Information Technology for a large variety of companies that are in the Pharmaceutical industry (elaborate). And you can go to Pharmacy School to become a Pharmacist!
  11. VEREJ: (no more than two minutes on this slide) We have five main work environments for Clinical Pharmacy Tech Jobs Hospital Inpatient Pharmacy (this is where the majority of the jobs are) Home Health Care Pharmacy Nursing Homes / Senior Homes Closed Door Pharmacies Some Compounding Pharmacies Hospice Care You won’t be doing just one function Six months of my Cedars employment was Emergency room is different Labor and Delivery is different Pediatrics is different It’s a huge area to cover Distribution and IV are the main functions for Hospital training.
  12. VEREJ: Different environment than Retail Pharmacy Setting: Hospital or Inpatient care settings requires a more knowledgeable staff for all level of care. That includes Pharmacy Technicians. Responsibilities are more critical: In regards to patient’s life, everything you do is critical. In the hospital pharmacy you’re preparing parenteral medications. PARENTERAL – means not by mouth – directly to the blood stream which means errors are fatal. So you HAVE to pay attention. Being on time is even more important than in retail pharmacy You have from 1 to 15 minutes to deliver STAT (immediately required) medication Some medications can cost up to $25,000 for ONE dose (a cancer drug) HIGHER PAY: You have more responsibilities and higher levels of responsibility. You are responsible to a staff, co-workers and responsible to patients. Your pharmacist is depending on you, the nurses are depending on you and the patients are depending on you and the FAMILY is going to be depending on you, too. ADDITIONAL STATE and FEDERAL REGULATIONS: Besides having Federal and State government regulations, there are privately established organizations that do rating for the hospitals. So you have to comply with those recommendations and standards of these organizations. For example: THE JOINT COMMISSION, HIPPA, BOP, OSHA – and you’ll learn all about these in class. If they visit your workplace and they ask you a compliance question, you have to be able to answer their questions in the moment. HIGHER STANDARD PERSONAL/CLINICAL PERFORMANCE: As a Pharmacy Technician you HAVE to stay current in your education and your performance. Minimum of 20 hours of Continuing Education is required in every hospital now. Re: critical responsibilities USING A HIGHER LEVEL OF YOUR PHARMACY TECH SKILLS: Hospitals will require you to take an entrance test to assess your knowledge. If you don’t pass it, you’re not hired. They’ll be testing your math skills. And brand and generic drug knowledge. Check in with yourself and ask “How open are you to learning new things?” because it is changing every day. Your eagerness to learn is required because you’re going to learn new things every day. In a hospital it’s all so fast – you learn one thing and you turn around and you have to learn something new – new drugs, new technologies, new regulations – all the time. CHRISTINE: LARGER ENVIRONMENT: CHRISTINE: Hospital busy, large ; Assisted Living Facilities, Senior Homes What to expect to see there. How is it different from Retail Pharmacy In contact with patients – you can’t be squeamish – take more compassion – more patience. More emotional skills, better interpersonal skills. And we train you for that.
  13. VEREJ: So let’s talk about money and how much these jobs pay! Entry Level wages average for Retail Pharmacy Techs starts at $12.50 per hr which is $26,000 per year. Plus you’ll get benefits if you work full-time. Outpatient / Independent Pharmacy - $15 to $18 per hour, which comes to $31,2000 - $37,440 per year. Those with about 4 years of experience can expect about $22 per hour, or $46k per year. And when you get to the clinical settings like hospitals, the pay range jumps to $25-$38 per hour, which equates to $52,000 to $79,000 per year. The wage range for Experienced Clinical Pharmacy Techs will depend on your specializations, where you work and the duration of your experience. i.e.) full time vs. part-time / hospital vs. closed door Barry and Verej will mention the need of multi-lingual Who speaks more than 1 language? The state of California is a multi-lingual, multi-cultural state. Being multi-lingual is a huge benefit for Pharmacy Techs in this state. It can increase your pay and the type of job you qualify for. So you can see how our comprehensive 10-month training program can really position you well for a great, high-paying career with lots of room for advancement. Plus, if you enroll tonight for Pharmacy tech, you’ll be entered to win one of the embroidered WLAC scrub tops which you’ll receive at the beginning of class.
  14. VEREJ: So now that we’ve talked about the types of work available, let’s talk about our professional training program here at West LA College and how we prepare you to succeed in this field. This is a quality education training program. You’ll have class three days a week and it takes about 9 months to finish. You’ll also have to set aside time to study and do homework. We provide a great deal of hands-on training because that’s how you learn best – by doing. When you finish your seven classes with passing scores, you’ll do an externship of 120 hours. And a great feature of our program is that it is affordable and costs much, much less than what competitor programs charge. We’ll talk about that later.
  15. VEREJ: Read the slide. Review the weekly class schedule that is handed out. Talk about the textbooks (handout) How you start with Intro to Pharmacy, go into Calculations, Pharmacology, etc.
  16. VEREJ: Read the slide. Classes start at 6:45 on Tuesday and Thursday nights, so that means you should try to arrive by 6:30.
  17. CHRISTINE: The facilities here at West are state of the art. You can see the Math Science building, which just opened a few years ago. Most of your class time you will be in MSA 111, which is the Pharmacy Tech lab, designed for this program. We will go there on a tour following this orientation. The room is laid out for the Pharmacy Tech program, with great tables and lots of counter space.
  18. VEREJ: This is our back Pharmacy Tech laboratory next to MSA 111, with a lot of the supplies. You can see our specialty vent hoods that you will use to prepare sterile injectibles like IV bags. And you can see some scales on the counter and mortar and pestles in the cabinets. Hey, look at that handsome man!
  19. Christine: When you finish this professional training program, here is what you will be able to do. (Don’t read the bullet points). All of these skills are critical to be able to work in the field as a Pharmacy Technician. With the training you’ll receive and the externship you’ll perform, you’ll be ready to get your state license and go to work.
  20. Christine: Briefly touch on the things they need to get their state license.
  22. Christine: Now let’s talk about cost. Our program is very reasonably priced at just $3,300 for 9 months of instruction, totaling more than 460 hours, with lots of hands-on experience. By comparison, most of the private schools in Southern California are charging $17 to $20-thousand – more than 5 times our program. So to go there you are going to need to shell out a lot more money and probably need to arrange for student loans and when you finish you are drowning in debt. Those schools charge so much because they have huge marketing budgets and high overhead – and they are for-profit institutions. West LA College is a community college, and even though Westside Extension is a self-supporting entity of the college, we price our instruction very affordably. There are cheaper programs out there too, but they generally have a lot less instruction and hands-on training – especially in the advanced clinical portions. So we think our program offers the best choice overall for a comprehensive program at an affordable price.
  23. CHRISTINE: Covers the professional dress, behavior. The information on where to buy the scrubs is on the handout. You will need to have your scrubs by the third week of class. Your hair must be clean and neat Closed Toe shoes are a MUST so you don’t hurt yourself in the lab. VEREJ: Tattoos must be covered. Excessive piercing is not allowed in any health care setting due to government regulation. No chewing gum in class or lab.
  24. VEREJ: Behave Professionally: You are being trained as if you are on the job already. Arrive on time (15 minutes early is even better) – shift changing in the hospital….report from colleagues. Turn your work in on time Electronic devices are tuned off unless assignment related Leave your problems outside the classroom Part of your training is to learn how to leave your problems at the door, so you can be of service to others when you’re on the job. Because this is how it works on the job for pharmacy technician – this is also how it works in our classroom. Have a Helpful and Positive Attitude Teamwork – Be cooperative when working in groups and teams Respect for your instructors, your fellow students
  25. Barry: Also refer to the sheet for the advanced students who wish to just take the clinical courses. $700 for those two.
