Editor's Notes
Netiquette – be respectful of others Use the right social media for you, but make sure that you are respectful of others Do not spam or send loads of posts, updates, retweets etc Do not use CAPITALS – shouting! Do not use inappropriate or offensive language Do not bad mouth previous or even current employers!! Be honest and don’t be afraid to show your personality, that’s what draws people in, they invest in you the person and consider how you would ‘fit’ into their company.

The purpose of an infographic is to consolidate a large amount of information and present it in an appealing and insightful way, making it easy and interesting to digest. I took the principles and applied them to my CV, creating a tailored infographic for each publication to which I submitted. It was effective – far more so than I had expected. I sent it via email to four publications: T3 , The York Press, Stuff, and also to a reporter for the Guardian's Technology section. Using bitly, I monitored the links that I placed in the emails to see which applications had been viewed and which hadn't. The two applications that registered clicks quickly replied, offering me placements. I think the reason this worked for me is because the CV showed I had good design skills. More importantly it demonstrated that I'm willing to try something different. Others have had greater success: US graduate Chris Spurlock posted his infographic CV online , only to have it go viral when the Huffington Post got their hands on it. Since its posting, it has accrued thousands of views, and Spurlock was then hired by the Huffington Post as infographics editor. An international hospitality graduate has landed himself a job that pays £40,000 for six-months work - he's the first official meerkat ambassador. Josh Mitchell, 22, beat five other candidates on the shortlist after a public vote. The graduate of UWIC University, Cardiff, will run social media initiatives and represent the meerkats at sport and cultural events over the summer. More than 1,500 people from across the country applied for the role, supposedly dreamed up by comparethemeerkat.com founder Aleksandr Orlov. The six shortlisted candidates - who included a University of Cambridge graduate, a former Royal Navy officer from Chesterfield, a supermarket supervisor from Leeds and a Cornish surfer - had to persuade the British public they were the person for the unusual job. Mr Mitchell used social networking sites Facebook and Twitter to rake in votes, with 7,500 cast for the candidates in total. He posted videos on YouTube, went to student unions, created a campaign website, got in touch with local newspapers and took to the streets to canvass voters.
Keeping an up to date list of your contacts and regularly reviewing actions taken/contacts made Bookmarking useful resources and checking them regularly Joining mailing lists and professional bodies relevant to your area of interest Attending conferences and being strategic - who would it be useful to talk to, and why? Who would be willing to help you? What do you want to find out from them? It's a two way process - remember, you may be able to help them too Contacting authors of interesting articles appearing in relevant professional journals to expand your knowledge and network of contacts Doing "information interviewing" - where you arrange to talk to someone who may be able to help you or give advice Looking at relevant vacancy sources and recruitment agencies, even if you're not applying for jobs at the moment. Be aware of what is happening in your chosen field Getting work experience or work shadowing someone for a day to find out more about what a specific job role really involves Getting feedback if you are unsuccessful with an application Making speculative applications to organisations you are interested in working for http://www.reading.ac.uk/careers/postgrad/cjstechniques.asp
