Analysis Of The Epic Of Old Mali
Erica Pangburn
Professor Timothy Fitzgerald
March 21, 2015
Primary Source Analysis
An Epic of Old Mali
Sundiata: an Epic of Old Mali was written by D.T. Niane and translated by G.C. Pickett. D.T. Niane
was a historian who received this version of Sundiata s epic from Djeli Mamoudou Kouyaté, a griot.
In fact, there is not a true author for this epic due to the fact that it has been transmitted orally for
many years. This epic justly showed the type of culture Africa had at the time taken place and has
defined the type of people who use to reside there. Sundiata: an Epic of Old Mali withholds many
themes, but only some of importance: the transmission of the epic, politics, religion, and destiny.
It can be argued that the orality of Sundiata versus the written translation is an important theme of the
epic of old Mali. This story has been translated several times into several different languages. The epic
of Sundiata originated as an oral epic performance that was performed by various African griots or
bards. It was a challenge translating the oral tradition into written form. Thus concluded that orality is
a better form of transmission than writing. Transmitting oral passages into writing can be easily
falsified. Oral communication is more unquestioning than writing. Interesting enough, the griots are
important persons who transmitted Sundiata: an Epic of Old Mali through many lineages. Griots were
not only historical orators, but they were also important political figures.

Zipcar is the world s largest car sharing and car club service. It is an alternative to traditional car rental
and car ownership. Subsidiary of Avis Budget Group; founded in January 2000, serving urban areas
throughout Austria, Canada, France, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, founded by
Antje Danielson and Robin Chase in the state of Massachusetts (Zipcar, 2014). Each and every Zipcar

congestion and less pollution, but it is about understanding why those things are a problem, and
finding sustainable solutions. Zipcar charges a one time application fee, and an annual fee. Car renting
at other locations do not cover fuel, insurance, parking or maintenance but with Zipcar they cover all
four and it is free of charge to their members. Zipcar members have automated access to Zipcars using
an access card, which works with the car s technology to unlock the door, where the keys are already
located inside. Zipcars have RFID transponders on the windshield that communicates with the card to
lock and unlock the doors of the vehicle. Zipcar also offers an iPhone or Android

Carson Environmental Issues
Rachel Carson was an influential woman in the 1960s ;she was famous for her book Silent Springs.
After she wrote her book it brought up some controversy about the environment. Thus, beginning EPA
and the start of the national holiday Earth Day. The book is based off of the harmful effects that
chemicals have on the Earth like DDT. According to Proquest ,2001 it mentions in Rachel Carson that,
One of the most dramatic results of her environmental activism was the U.S. government s order to
stop spraying the pesticide DDT in 1964 ( p.1). Because of the government orders; the chemical was

The four main waste they deal with are toxic waste, reactive waste, ignitable waste and corrosive waste.
Toxic Waste damages the health of humans and other known living organism. Reactive Waste can

can lead to even more problems like forest fires. The last one, corrosive waste will eat through metal

environment. Because; of all these harmful effects that these chemical were having on the
environment and humans it became an even bigger problem how that it would affect thus say the

The Role Of Schizophrenia In Shakespeare s Hamlet
My greatest fear is this brain of mine..The worst thing imaginable is to be terrified of one s own mind,
the very matter that controls all that we are and all that we do and feel (Torrey). E. Fuller Torrey, M.D
wrote a book to help the parents and families of people who suffer from schizophrenia disorders and
those alike. According to many doctors who are specialist like Torrey, schizophrenia disorders are held
on a spectrum and hold different subtypes of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia can take control over a
person s life and mind in some of the worst ways possible. In Shakespeare s Hamlet, Hamlet s biggest
adversity is his own mind. Hamlet shows symptoms of Schizoaffective disorder, a subtype of
schizophrenia that causes delusions and severe depression. Hamlet shows symptoms of
schizoaffective disorder through his delusions of conversations with his dead father and his severe
depression over his father s death and mother s remarriage throughout the play.

The System Of The Human Body
Introduction
The integumentary system is one of the largest and most integral organs in the human body,
encompassing many structures and playing key roles in the protection and general function of the
body (Zimmermann, 2014). As with everything however; things can go wrong, failures can occur
causing the system to function at a level below what is required of it. It is at this point where we must
be active in our response to these faults and subsequently utilise knowledge and techniques in order to
contain these failures and sustain human life.
Structure
Encompassing structures like; hair, nails, nerves and glands, the integumentary system is evidently a
hugely important and crucial organ within the human body (Science Net Links, 2015). Despite
containing all of these structures however, the main component of the integumentary system is the
skin. Consisting of three layers; epidermis, dermis and hypodermis, the skin plays key functional roles
in the control of temperature within the body, production of essential vitamins, housing of sensory
receptors, secretion of waste products and protection of the body (Kerr, 2010).
The epidermis is the most superficial layer of the skin, composed of keratinized stratified squamous
epithelium, providing a waterproofed protective layer over the epidermis (Moore, Dalley, Agur 2010).
The epidermis itself separates into several layers (Figure 1) at thicker areas of skin, for example palms
of hands (Carola, Harley, Noback, 1992).

Current Outbreak Of The Ebola Virus
.
What is Ebola? Ebola, also called Hemorrhagic Fever is a rare deadly disease caused by infection with
a strain of ebola virus. This organism causes fever, headache, coughing blood, vomiting blood, severe
bleeding, organ failure, and leads to death. It is spread through body fluids and blood of someone who
is showing ebola symptoms. Ebola can also be spread by hazardous products (unclean needles or
unscreened blood), skin to skin contact, exchanging saliva (kissing, sharing drinks or food), and
making contact with a contaminated surface (doorknob, tissue, etc.).
The most current outbreak of Ebola is in West Africa which was discovered in March of 2014 and is
considered one of the biggest Ebola outbreaks since Ebola was discovered in 1976. The countries
affected the most by this virus are Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. These countries do not have a
stable economy which means they cannot afford the tools and technology to study the virus. In 2014
there were 9,936 Ebola victims but only 4,877 died that year. The virus has an extremely high risk of
death. It kills between 25 and 90 percent of those infected by Ebola. Recovery from Ebola usually
depends on care and the patient s immune system s response to the treatment. ... Show more content

Autobiographical Memory Analysis
Autobiographical memory is the memory of a person s life events and information (Fossati, 2013).
One process that affects the accuracy of memory is coherence. Although, coherence is essential to
maintain self esteem, self beliefs, and a stable sense of self (Conway, 2005). Individuals sometimes
desire super memory due to memory fallibility. There are people who have superior memories such as
individuals with Highly superior autobiographical memory (HSAM). Unfortunately, possessing such a
memory comes with severe consequences, which renders super memory less appealing, especially as
memories have such a significant influence on the self (James, 1950).
Human memory can be changed, biased or even completely fabricated (Conway et al., 2004). ... Show

Studies of extreme violations of coherence show the vast importance of coherence to maintaining a
self that can operate effectively in the world (Conway, 2005). Baddeley et al (1996) reported cases
regarding hospitalised schizophrenics that illustrates this. In one case, a man truly believed he was a
famous rock guitarist despite knowing he could not play guitar. Another patient believed he was a
Russian chess grand master even though he could not speak Russian, nor had he been there, and he
was often beaten at the game by other patients. Furthermore, Downes and Mayes (1994) reported a
case regarding a man with a neuropsychological disorder. He was convinced he could remember
having a terrible argument with his father the day before, although, he could also remember attending
his father funeral years earlier.
Instances such as this highlight the importance of coherence to healthy individuals. Individuals with a
coherent self are more likely to have high self esteem, and increased well being (Csikzentmilhalkyi
and Baettie, 1979). Finally, when the self is in line with the past the individual can be effective,
achieve goals and relate to others (Bluck and Habermas,

How Did Gandhi Support The Human Rights Movement
At different times in history, individuals have defended human rights using a variety of methods. Their
efforts have met with varying degrees of success. One leader was Gandhi. There were many causes for
India s independence movement was when India gained independence from Britain. One was British
disrespected indian cultures. They outlawed sati. Which was when a wife burns herself after husband
dies. Hindus were upset that this was outlawed. British forced the indian soldiers to use pork fat to
lubricate ammunition. This goes against Hindu and Muslims beliefs. Another one was sepoy mutiny.
This was when indian soldiers who worked for British revolted against the British commanders. This
failed, but increased nationalism in India. Next, Indians ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

non violence. One movement was The Homespun Movement. The Indians boycotted British cloth.
They decided to weave their own cloth at home. Next was The Salt March. It was a peaceful protest
British tax on salt. The Indians could only buy salt from the British and had to pay taxes on it. Gandhi
and his followers protested by walking 240 miles to the coast to make their own salt. Newspapers
across the world spread the news. Gandhi gained worldwide support. Eventually 60,000 Indians were
arrested. Last was The Quit India Movement. Gandhi s calls for Britain to give India immediate
independence by asking all indians to leave jobs. Indians refused to fight in WWII, teachers stopped
teaching, other Indians left their jobs. This movement was successful. There were many effects of the

It helps studio s earn more money when customers rent movies from Blockbusters then with On

reliable as blockbuster. In every store they offer the option of customer service to guide their
customers in picking the best movie rental. Plus blockbusters suggest a customer rent a movie for
more then one night. All US households own at least one or two DVD players and can choose to go

months of free movie rentals for those customers who cancel their services with Netflix or from Wal

However, all of these strengths that Blockbuster has to offer there are always weakness lingering
around. The most popular one is not responding quickly enough to the technological advantages of
direct digital distributions, and waited until Netflix come into the market. Blockbuster co brand their

Blockbuster stores are always out of movies in stock when customers demand for them. With Netflix,

harder to convince customers to rent a movie from the store. Blockbuster finally adapted to the new

Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder that affects the body s movements, balance, and position
(CDC, 2015). The condition can affect parts or the entire body, and it can impair motor function from
assisted walking, to the use of a wheelchair (McMahon, Pruitt, Vargus Adams, 2009). Due to the
variations in the condition, it is difficult to find a set treatment plan, so often cerebral palsy patients
undergo various therapy programs, in order to find one that produces the greatest outcome. Currently,
forms of therapy such as chiropractic, massage, and stretching are used in conjunction with regular
occupational and physical therapy sessions. Chiropractic interventions are a commonly used and
accepted therapy that helps relieve arthritis, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We do believe that modified suit therapy can be an effective therapy treatment; however, due to the
lack of research conducted, we cannot confirm the hypothesis. Due to the physical and neurological
aspects of suit therapy, it is more beneficial than traditional therapy techniques such as chiropractic
and massage therapy. This is important, because it is always favorable when we make positive
breakthroughs in the medical field. At the end of the day, if this treatment is helping patients manage
cerebral palsy better, it will be more likely for physical and occupational therapists to pick it up and
use it during treatment sessions. The case study articles by Rosenbaum (2003) and Ko, Lee, Kang, and

benefits that can come along with using it. The article by Anne Turner was also good to read, because
it helped remind us that even though suit therapy seems like a great idea, there are many unanswered
questions surrounding this this therapy. Suit therapy does have a lot of potential to benefit many
children with cerebral palsy. Overall, there has been limited research conducted on this topic, and
although the results show that suit therapy is an effective treatment, all of the

have turned into a multi billion dollar industry with consistent growth. Despite of the fast growing
business, the NCAA remains non profit and labels the players student athletes to mark them amateur.
With this label, athletes are recognized as student first and athlete second. Scholastics are supposed to

Ed O Bannon, a previous UCLA basketball player filed a case looking to sue the NCAA for licensing
players without consent. The NCAA marks their players as amateurs, therefore, they do not allow
paying players. However after the ruling, the NCAA was found to be violating antitrust laws, which
could potentially change the model of the system (Maese). Judge Claudia Wilken ruled an injunction
that schools in the NCAA would be allowed to provide players a trust fund in order to compensate
players for using their names in broadcasting, merchandise or imaging. In 2016, this trust fund will
allow universities to conduct bidding wars for future recruits (Strauss, Tracy). This of course, would
be able to be capped at a certain mark and would not be payable until after the departure of a student
athlete s time at a college or the end of their eligibility (Berkowitz) This court case could potentially
change the way college sports are run.
Marc Edelman, a writer for forbes.com, argues his point in 21 Reasons Why Student Athletes Are
Employees And Should Be Allowed To Unionize is for the movement to pay players. Edelman focuses
his point on NCAA programs being large revenue businesses and in his opinion should consider
student athletes as employees. With this, he explains that student athletes have to work an average of
43.3 hours a week and oftentimes forced to miss class due to NCAA playoff scheduling (Edelman).

After The War Poem Analysis
All the arms we need are for hugging. Unknown. Writers have used their voices and opinions to
protest war and its effects of their own experiences of the war. Stephen Crane worked as a journalist
during the Spanish American war and published the poem War Is Kind to show how people see the
war, versus what the war was really like. Wilfred Owen wrote the poem Dulce et Decorum Est , which
means It is sweet and right to die for your country . Owen fought during World War 1, where he also
passed away. Tim O Brien served in the Vietnam War and wrote The Things They Carried, to explain
what the soldiers had to go through during this war by carrying heavy materials and close friends
deaths. Using his personal experiences and difficulties after the war, author Kevin Powers wrote The
Yellow Birds after he returned home from serving in Iraq, explaining what goes through his mind after
the war. Writers use imagery, irony, and structure to protest war. First of all, in the poem, Dulce et
Decorum Est, author Wilfred Owen uses imagery to protest war. In lines 21 and 22, Owen states In all
my dreams, before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. This quotation
illustrates the image of someone dying during the war, and how corrupt it was on the author. After
Owen states this, he then goes on to explain what they did with the bodies after someone would die,
stating Behind the wagon that we flung him in, (Line 24), and If you could hear, at every jolt, the
blood come gargling from the froth corrupted lungs, (Lines 27 28). By using these words, Owen
creates the horrifying image of someone dying, how horrific it was, and how it was an everyday thing
for the other soldiers to go through. In his book, The Yellow Birds, Kevin Powers uses imagery to
protest war by stating what it was like to kill someone during the war and what it will do to your mind.
Lines 4 6 state, or for that matter killing men and shooting them in the back and shooting them more
times than necessary to actually kill them and it was like just trying to kill everything you saw
sometimes. This quotation explains how gory the war was and how soldiers kept shooting even if they

Cnn s Theory Of News Values
News reporting in the UK can best be understood through the theory of news values
News values are a set of theories that look to explain the reasons for stories appearing in the media.
News values are general guidelines or criteria used by media outlets to determine how much
prominence to give to a story (Spencer Thomas, 2013). The new values theories aim to explain why
decisions are made to prioritise certain stories. A hard news story carries information in order of news
value (Keeble, 2014), which explains why certain stories have much more coverage than others.
Richard Keeble and Galtung and Ruge attempt to explain news values in their theories. Galtung and
Ruge s theory of news values includes: negativity, proximity, ... Show more content on

Also, the use of news values is supported by the target audience of a publication as the readership of
the publication proves what news values make up their stories. For example, a newspaper such as The
Sun may print stories about celebrity scandals and trends, which is highlighted in Keeble s theory of
news values which includes human interest (sex and celebrities), fashion and sport. On the other hand,
it could be said that news values are weak in helping us to understand news reporting. The news
values theories appear to omit certain factors such as the brand image, target audience, the influence of
ownership and social prejudice when considering the stories that publications prioritise. These factors
could be seen as important news values, if they were included in the theories. Also, publications may
choose to print stories not because of what they deem to be newsworthy, but because of partiality and
bias. This is media gate keeping, whereby the press decides which information will go forward, and
which will not (Lewin, 1943). They publish what they want readers to see. This could relate to
political bias, whereby a publication prints positive stories that favour the political party that they
support and prints negative stories about the political party that opposes the one that they support.
News values can be used to understand the media

Felix Mendelssohn Symphony 4 Essay
Felix Mendelssohn s Symphony No. 4 in A Major, Op. 90 Movement 1 is in sonata allegro form. His
musical style is mostly classical with a few incorporations from the Romantic style. The theme of the
first movement is introduced with violins. The tempo is rather fast and bright which labels the first
movement as allegro vivace. The texture of the movement is created with the addition of the
woodwinds: flutes, clarinets, oboes, horns, and bassoons. The string instruments contain the melody
and the brass accompaniment being the timpani, creates the rhythm of the first movement. The
woodwinds introduce the second theme of the symphony with the accompaniment of the strings. Right
after the first theme is reintroduced, the listener is presented with the last main section of the sonata

In contrast, the tempo of Johannes Brahms Symphony No. 2 in D Major Movement 4 is fast and as
stated in Music: Our Cultural Evolution it is lively with spirit (allegro con spirito). The first theme in
the fourth movement is introduced with the brass instruments and following it are the string
instruments. The beginning of the fourth movement starts out soft, creating a peaceful atmosphere but
there is a sudden shift in the volume to being very loud (fortissimo). Even though the beginning notes
were soft, it was noticeable that they were each accented (subito forte). Although there are sudden
outbreaks within the piece that can be identified as fortissimo, Brahms is able to make the piece sound
unified. The repetition in the middle of the fourth movement strongly expresses the main idea as it is
an effort to make the listener become attentive. The texture of this movement may seem overbearing
but it pulls the piece together as a whole. The orchestra s dominating sound emphasizes the piece s
tonic key being D Major as it should in the last part of any sonata allegro

(ca. 1852 57), by Gustave Gourbet, brings attention the distinctions and similarities in the approaches
each artist took to present these two women s personalities living in the 18th and 19th century.
Initially the first thing the viewer notes is that, both paintings are full body length portraits of women,
who are focused directly at the viewer. The scale of both women figures, are fairly similar to human
size and their position allows the viewer to get a feel of the uniqueness of each woman s personality,
fashion and style. The portrait of Elizabeth Farren, The Late Countess of Derby, depicts an older
woman of age standing in the middle of a natural outdoor background. Her pose is rather modest, and
natural while, her right hand is holding a fur cloak that just covers her bosom area. She is standing
slightly leaning towards the front. She appears to be very graceful, and symmetric in dimension. The
texture of her hair appears grey and powdered. The expression of her face is calm and innocent,
however the eyes give an impression she stands as a strong female figure. Her cheeks have a natural
blush tone color to them. Mrs. Farren holds a fur beige, white and brown purse in her left hand, with a
velvet blue ribbon attached. On her left hand, the viewer can see she is wearing brown leather

Why Is John Brown Wrong
John Brown: Right or Wrong about Abolition
While John Brown had the right idea about abolishing slavery, he killed people because of it.
However, he believed that it was his God given mission to free the slaves, and so he employed the
help of his sons and other people sympathetic to his cause. Even though he might have had good
intentions and ideas, he went about abolishing slavery the wrong way.
John Brown was a radical abolitionist who believed in the violent overthrow of the slavery system.
(History.com Staff) He was born in Torrington, Connecticut, on May 9, 1800, to Ruth Mills and Owen
Brown. Brown s father was a Calvinist and worked as a tanner. He passionately believed that slavery

Brown appointed himself captain of the antislavery forces at the Osawatomie Creek. When proslavery
forces attacked the free state town of Lawrence, guerilla (a member of a small independent group

than a hundred men and boys to die. However, that is not the worst part; the people killed were killed
in cold blood. They did not fight back; in fact most of them were not even armed. The success of the
proslavery guerilla fired up Brown s resolution, as well as four of his sons and two other allies, to
murder five reputably proslavery settlers. (History.com Staff)
However, all of his acts led up to his largest and final act. That final act was John Brown s Raid on
Harper s Ferry. His plan was to capture arms to supply the slaves and create a mass insurgence. It took
several months of getting ready and gathering supplies. To start off, he was a fugitive from the law, so
he grew a beard to disguise himself. (Kent, p.10) He spent weeks getting money from his societies,

Sartre Escapism
In Sartre s The Transcendence of the Ego, Sartre describes a part of the ego called the I, and implies
that utilizing this part of the ego is a form of escapism . This is because Sartre describes the I as a form
of transcendental form of thought, from which we produce and observe fantasies. It is, as if
consciousness constituted the ego as a false representation of itself, as if consciousness hypnotized
itself before this ego which it has constituted (Sartre, pg. 89). So the I creates a false representation of
consciousness in order to escape from the real consciousness. The I is also a consciousness that thinks
about itself. So, if one understands the I Think so as to make of thought a production of the I, one has
already constituted thought as passivity and as state, that is to say, as object (Sartre, pg. 89). So not
only can the I create fantasies, or false realities, but it can make them real enough to reflect on the
false realities. With this regard, the consciousness focuses on observing and thinking about the
realities that the I has created instead of the actual reality, and as such the I can be described as a farm
of escapism. 2. Sartre seems to think that consciousness has two parts. First, he thinks that there exists

The Navajo, also known as Dine`, are some of the first Indians who set foot in America. The primary
mode of subsistence for any culture means a way of supporting life. The Navajo s primary modes of
subsistence are pastoralists. How does a pastoralist society impact beliefs and values, healing and
sickness, and kinship of the Navajo culture? These are the three aspects I plan to discuss and prove
that the Navajo Nation is a Nation within a Nation. The Navajo Nation is a semi autonomous Native

In the early twentieth century oil and gas lead the US government to form a Navajo business council.
Herbert J. Hagerman was hired by the US government to lead Navajo tribal councils and run the
meetings. (Lee, 2010) In the 1940 s the Navajo nation changed tremendously. They no longer raised
sheep or livestock, instead thousands of Navajo people went off to find wage labor to supplement their
income instead. The tribal council industrialized itself. (Lee, 2007) In the 1970 s the Navajo nation
was reorganized and the reservation had someone in control of the nation. Peter MacDonald was
elected chairman of the council and made new powers direct the Navajo government. In 1998 the
tribal council passed a Navajo Nation Local Governance Act that allowed local matters to be made by
local level people, allowing more local authority. The current government structure is now an agency
to the Navajo society, yet it is non Navajo nature, and the people of Navajo have never sanctioned it.
Today the Navajo Nation doesn t have the self sufficient powers it once did. Congress and US
Supreme courts have limited the powers of the tribal government. . Today, Supreme Court decisions

Essay on A Shropshire Lad
Shropshire: A Place of Imagined Sexual Contentment
Published in 1869, A.E. Housman s A Shropshire Lad stands as one of the most socially acclaimed
collections of English poetry from the Victorian age. This period in British history, however, proves,
by judiciary focus (the Criminal Law Amendment of 1885), to be conflictive with Housman s own
internal conflicts concerning the homoerotic tendencies which he discovered in his admiration of
fellow Oxford student Moses Jackson. Housman, much unlike other English literary figures such as
Oscar Wilde and Thomas hardy, was not an artist who found it necessary to directly confront Britain
with any political dissention imposed by is works. Instead, amp;quot;for Housman the discovery of

the sixth stanza the quatrain is consistent with this tone as the speaker informs the dead ma that his girl

sweetheart amp;quot; much like everything else amp;quot;is also repeated without him amp;quot;
(Hoagwood 63). The speaker meanwhile becomes somewhat evasive by imploring his old friend to
amp;quot;Be still. . . and sleep amp;quot; (l.24). Finally the dead man inquires (ll. 25 28):
Is my friend hearty,
Now I am thin and pine,
And has he found to sleep in
A better bed than mine?
To which the speaker s response in the last stanza presumably indicates that he is involved with the
amp;quot;dead man s sweetheart amp;quot; (l. 32).
The question posed in the poem s penultimate stanza is one of various interpretation concerning the
last line. The initial response tends to be that the dead man is asking if his old friend is sleeping in a
amp;quot;better bed amp;quot; than the coffin in which he is buried; thus, stands as an example of the
colloquial speech Housman employs throughout A Shropshire Lad. Other interpretations suggest that
the dead man is asking his friend of his financial status, happiness, or even that the dead man is
intimating knowledge that his friend was sleeping with his sweetheart prior to his death. What seems

Essay about Religion Purification in Taxi Driver
He s a profit and a pusher.
Partly truth partly fiction.
A walking contradiction. Kris Kirstofferson
In Martin Scorcese s Taxi Driver, Travis Bickle repeatedly expresses two ideas that are central to the
film. First, Travis has an undying wish to purify the world. He wants to rid his city of all the evil and
scum that currently inhabits the city s cold and damp streets. Second, is the method by which Travis
tries to obtain his goals. Travis Bickle tries to clean up his city by methods similar to those of religious
figures. He even takes on a role as a savior figure. Travis Bickle s quest to save the world via religious
ideas fails, and instead results is a bloodbath.

Much like Noah, he believes that he will be saved, while everyone else in the world perishes from the
torrents of water. Later in the film, Travis feels compelled to take action against this sleaze. He wants
to help purify the world by eliminating the sleaze by whatever methods he deems appropriate. Even if
this means killing his fellow man, then so be it.
Another instance where we see Travis revert to this theme of purifier is when he first meets Betsy. The
childish scrawl in his diary tells the story. I first saw her at Palantine headquarters at 63rd and
Broadway. She was wearing a white dress. She appeared like an angle. Out of this filthy mass. She is
alone. They cannot touch her. In these few choice words, Travis Bickle again reemphasis the recurring
religious references. In this specific instance, Travis s first words about his new love interest are, She
was wearing a white dress. White is traditionally a color used to represent purity. In Travis s eyes,
Betsy is the virginal ideal that he must strive to obtain. To him she is his perfect match. Possibly the
most important aspect of this quotation is the religious references that it conjures up. Travis refers to
Betsy as an angel; she is one of the few people who does not sink down into the muck that covers the
city.

Essay On Anger
The effects of anger on health have more to do with duration than frequency and intensity. The normal
experience of overt anger lasts only a few minutes. But the subtle forms of anger, such as resentment,
impatience, irritability, grouchiness, etc., can go on for hours and days at a time. Consistent, prolonged
levels of anger give a person a five times greater chance of dying before age 50. Anger elevates blood
pressure, increases threat of stroke, heart disease, cancer, depression, anxiety disorders, and, in
general, depresses the immune system (angry people have lots of little aches and pains or get a lot of
colds and bouts of flu or headaches or upset stomachs). To make matters worse, angry people tend to

You have an anger problem if some subtle form of anger that you may not even be aware of makes
you do what is not in your best interest or keeps you from performing at your highest potential. This
could mean something subtle, like putting a chilly wall between you and others or a continual
impatience or low frustration tolerance that interferes with problem solving and performance
competence.
Whatever the form of anger, in persistence you run the risk of becoming a reactaholic, with your
thoughts, feelings, and behavior totally controlled by whoever or whatever you re reacting to. The
more reactive you are, the more powerless you feel; anger is ultimately a cry of powerlessness.
Self Compassion and Compassion for Others
Mastery of the three steps of self compassion and compassion for others makes us virtually immune to
the ill effects of anger. The first step of self compassion is seeing beneath the symptom or defense
(anger, anxiety, manipulation, obnoxious behavior) to the cause, which is some form of core hurt
(feeling unimportant, disregarded, accused, devalued, guilty, untrustworthy, rejected, powerless,
unlovable). Second, the core hurt must be validated (this is how I feel at this moment), and, third,
changed (this behavior or event or disappointment or mistake does not mean that I m unimportant, not
valuable or lovable.) Compassion for others is recognizing that their symptoms, defenses, and
obnoxious behavior come from a core hurt,

Nepali acts as a lingua franca in areas throughout the Himalayan region and has a long history of
being imposed through military conquest and sustained by political domination. Because of this, there
are a number of related dialects that are spoken apart from the standard form, though it is becoming

Use Of Handheld Cameras Changed The Way Of Police
The use of smartphone cameras changed the way that police were perceived as well. Accusations of
police brutality could now be supported with video evidence instead of just a victim s word against an
officer. While filming police during stops and quality of life policing can hold the officer accountable
in incidents of police brutality, cell phone video footage doesn t always tell the whole story. In August,
two Kansas police officers came under scrutiny after a 36 second video was posted on social media of
them roughly restraining a suspect on the ground (Hunter). However, the police s body cam and dash
cam footage told a different story: after the suspect, John Harrison was pulled over for not wearing a
seatbelt, the police discovered the smell of marijuana coming from his car, that he was driving with a
suspended license and had more than 20 warrants out for his arrest (Kiesling and Smith). The dash
cam video shows Harrison resisting arrest, attempting to flee (Hunter) and punching one of the police
officers (Kiesling and Smith). The police were found innocent and Harrison was put in jail for
outstanding warrants and is facing charges for driving with a suspended license, battery on a police
officer, and obstruction of justice (Hunter).

Clint Eastwood s _Letters from Iwo Jima_ Essay
In 2006, a film directed by Clint Eastwood was released in theatres around the world titled Letters
from Iwo Jima. Unlike most war movies that are produced for the American public, this film entirely
captures the World War II battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of the enemy. For a rare change,
Letters from Iwo Jima shows the cultural aspect and daily life the Japanese soldiers experienced
during the war. Although the film was given many positive reviews and was noted as one of the best

The Japanese soldiers went into battle knowing that they would be killed and they would not make it
off the island. One of the most shameful acts for a Japanese soldier to do is surrender, and it was very
common for the soldiers to commit suicide before turning themselves in to the enemy. To commit
suicide and avoid capture of the enemy was considered noble and heroic in the Japanese military. In a
way, the soldiers were brainwashed into doing anything for the emperor of Japan and were told over
and over how glorious it is to die on the battlefield for their country. During the film, one Japanese
soldier points out that Japan will win the war due to the fact that the Americans show too much
sympathy and emotion for human life, and do not have the same desire and will that the Japanese
have. One of the main themes presented in Letters from Iwo Jima is the idea that good and evil always
exist on both sides. Much of the time, war films tend to show favor to one country, leaving the
audience close minded to what happens to the other side. One of the main characters followed in the
film is the Japanese Commander of Iwo Jima, General Kuribayashi. Unlike any other Japanese
Commander, Kuribayashi was very familiar with the American people and spent a good deal of time
visiting the United States prior to the war. Despite the strict and abusive tactics used by the Japanese

Steele focuses her argument around high achieving, motivated black student s underachievement
rooted in stereotype threat. She argues that students that are of equal intelligent level underperform
due to subtle but powerful impacts of stereotypes, and that colleges can lessen these impacts by
addressing the issue through creation of identity safety and diminishing of racial divides. This point is
strongly proven through the study conducted by Woolf et al. (2008) where minority students
underachieve in medical school due to decreased teacher interactions rooted in student classifications.
If a safe identity space were created in this institution the classifications and ultimately racial divide
would be nullified, leading to equal relationships amongst all students and teachers and ultimately
opportunity for equal performance. Upon examination of Steele s essay and other case studies,

Cultural Effects Of Imperialism In Honduras
Honduras has the highest homicide rate in the world. (worldatlas.com) It s a country that has been

Israel Palestine Land Settlement Problem, written by Charles Rowley and Jennis Taylor. However, this
conflict did not end in 2005. This article was written in 2006, so anything within the last 10 years is
not included. The conflict between the two counties still continues to this day and still remains a major
problem. Israelis and Arabs have been fighting over Gaza on and off for decades now. The three issues
laid out in this article are the four major wars that took place, the refugee problem, and the conflict
between religions. It concludes with the road map to peace. Throughout his whole book, The Israel
Palestine Conflict, Gelvin speaks of the same historical events that occurred between Israel and
Palestine, while the article reveals there are still other conflicts, the land settlement problem has been
the major conflict between Israel and Palestine since 1948. The problem is, simply put, a dispute over
real estate (Gelvin 3). This conflict has resulted in major wars during the period of time following
World War II. The 1948 1949 Arab Israeli war began when Egypt, Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon invaded
Palestine. The second war that occurred, was the 1956 Suez Canal War, at the end of this war Israel
agreed to withdraw from the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza strip

Fallen Art Short Film Themes
This short film criticizes war by showing us that war is bad in general, and violence is senseless.
Fallen Art who was directed by Tomasz Baginski showed three themes in his short film setting points
on why war is bad through three different characters. His first theme is the man in a higher power
uniform that s kicking the soldiers off the ladder who represents power in the military. Then the old
guy in a lab coat taking the pictures, represents the value of military life by taking pictures of the
soldiers once they land from the fall. Lastly the young fat guy towards the end of the film represents
war as entertainment by creating art through the pictures given to him by the old guy.
I believe the argument the director is trying to make through his film is that violence is senseless, and
we should take in consideration those who are willing to go into war knowing the risks, and the
endings it can lead to. We should not only worry about the lives that can be taken during the war, but
as well as the way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We use all these different kinds of media to consume war as entertainment, and not worry about those
lives at stake. We has normal citizens don t know what it s actually like
being in a war zone knowing that your life is on the line, and that s what Baginski is trying to make
through the film.
In my opinion I agree with Baginski and the purpose of his short film, because we should value those
who are willing to put their lives on the line for our nation. We should be more aware, and
compassionate to those brave people. Not always are we going to be able to rely on the thought of
knowing there s always going to be more people who will volunteer. We should keep in mind our
veterans have been, and have seen different and unusual things, and their job wasn t as normal as any
kind of job. Their job isn t a job, it s more of beyond the call of

Retention Essay
Retention is one of the key prerequisites for or outcomes of learning that can either be reinforced
positively as well as negatively or otherwise optimized with respect to how the study time is to be
distributed across sessions. Intuitively, it would appear plausible that, increasing the uninterrupted
study duration would map into superior retention and learning outcomes. The present paper critically
addresses some empirical findings that could question the unaided intuition along these lines while
shedding light on the interaction channels or trade offs to be defined across a set of additional
explanatory variables.

It has been demonstrated (Rohrer Pashler, 2007) that, the aforementioned massed exposure as a matter

In other words, achieving a perfect score might either not be an option from the outset or would
alternatively take prohibitively long in terms of fixed duration (which exogenous time constraint can
still be varied at a higher level of analysis as warranted) or observation horizon (which is also assumed
away as if it were fixed and nearly instantaneous).
For that matter, massed or amassed exposure to prolonged session or a series of homogeneous study
setups at a stretch could have some equivalents that are difficult to distinguish between while possibly
concealing some critical nuances that might call for further extensions to the naïve analysis.
In particular, although the study appears to chiefly criticize as overlearning setups featuring highly
homogeneous exposures (e.g. word lists, math problems, and the like), still these might have some
crucial heterogeneity to them that renders even such seemingly unrewarding schemes effective in
enabling the learners to gain an appreciation for repetitive as well as systematic patterns. In other
words, this may cultivate a more holistic perception of the otherwise unfamiliar content (which
domain need not be treated in gestalt or similar terms), with overlaps as well as dissimilarities being
inferred and likely discerned or retrieved over the long haul. This mode of overlearning would render

Neonatal Nurse The career I chose is a Neonatal Nurse. According to an article on work.chron.com,
there are three levels of neonatal nursing. A level 1 neonatal nursery offers care to healthy newborns.
A level 2 neonatal nursery holds infants born prematurely or with an illness. A level 3 neonatal
nursery, usually called a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), provides care to infants who are
premature, brutally ill or too small. Infants admitted to a NICU may require ventilators, incubators or

Colombia And The Colombian Armed Conflict
Introduction
Colombia is facing an internal armed conflict for more than six decades. The causes for the
Colombian armed conflict can be more than one which include the conflict over land ownership, the
existence of marked economic differences, the pursuit of civilians because of their political
orientation. It also highlights the persistence of guerrillas with communist orientation and the
existence of drug traffickers that have involved their corruption to all levels of the Colombian sociaty.
The narco guerrillas and drug traffickers have given the idea to make a lot of money easy and fast. So
culturally in Colombia many people believe in this concept for that reason there is a lot of corruption
in Colombia, people porsuit this idea. The corruption in Colombia is much seen in the misuse or abuse
of public power for private or personal gains, meaning that this phenomenon is not limited to civil
servants, it is also defined as the set of attitudes and activities through which a person violates
commitments made himself, using the privileges granted, those agreements made with the aim of

Information Assurance Is Important For Our Future Business...
As web technology usage increase for businesses so does the need for security. Our web presence here
at Information Assurance is very important to the growth of the business. Our webservers are a crucial
element of our web infrastructure and a single vulnerability can lead to a security breach which can
affect Information Assurance s creditability. Which is why we must have webserver security a high
priority for our growing business. Our webserver hosts our website over the internet for client interact.
We must keep this interaction safe and secure so we don t face the same issues we suffered from in
2001 with denial of service attacks and the defacement of our website.
Attackers abuse vulnerabilities within the software of webservers to compromise our website security.
We have network security measures in place such as our firewall but we still need to strengthen our
webservers which can be access from anywhere as long as there is an internet connection. (Kumar)
Strengthening our web server security will help protect against known vulnerabilities that bypass the
firewall system and can compromise our web applications.
In a recent study 75% of cyber attacks are caused by taking advantage of vulnerabilities in web
application and webservers. With 57.9% of webserver market share being Apache servers and only
13.2% are Microsoft IIS, we are at high risk of our servers being compromised by attackers. Our
Apache server handles our HTTP request and responses from our clients.

Little Women Or Meg By Louisa May Alcott
Little Women or Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy by Louisa May Alcott is a coming of age story about four
girls with all different personalities and different ways of going through the world. Alcott was
persuaded by a talented editor from the Roberts Brothers firm to write a story for girls, and while
Alcott was hesitant because she was not the largest fan of girls; she began the task. While this piece
was originally geared to satisfy younger girls, the piece goes far beyond the point of just being another
piece of chick lit. When Alcott wrote the first part of Little Women in 1868, it was seen as
groundbreaking work. It was groundbreaking not because she was a new author, (she was thirty five
years old and had been in the writing industry for over a decade and a half (MacDonald 12)) but
because she was able to incorporate the aspect of young women (appealing to the juvenile audience)
but also incorporate a different kind of heroine. When Jo was made the heroine and the center of the
story; it went against societies norms to cherish a young lady who was the furthest thing from being
ladylike. With Jo as the leading lady, Alcott was able to address the idea of a novel centered on girls
but also include the newer concept of a tomboy. Throughout the novel Jo, with the rest of her sisters,
transforms from a young adolescent to a more mature, selfless women; but that was not without
struggles. This novel was seen as chick lit for more than one reason, with the title being Little

In its work as an accrediting body, CAPTE has established programmatic standards and criteria for

Joseph Campbell described an hero as someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than
oneself. In other words an hero has to be brave and courageous to give up his existence for others to
benefit from it. All stories consist of few common structure found universally in myths, tales and
movies. They are generally known as the hero s journey. The ability to be able to critically analyze it is
what is needed when trying to introduce the hero s journey into a story like this. Joseph Campbell
described the journey of an hero as occurring in a cycle consisting of three stages from departure
where the hero leaves his comfort and enters the world of the unknown. The second stage which he
called the initiation phase where the hero is subjected to a series of examinations where he must prove
himself. The last phase which is the return where the hero brings the benefit of his struggle back to his
people. This short story might not have exhibited this phases directly because of its tragic end but in
spite of its unorthodox structure the application of the simple mythological pattern of the hero s
adventure is evidenced in the story s tripartite division into

This novel tells the story of a sixteen year old named Blake. One day, when Blake went to Six Flags
with his two friends, Maggie (with whom Blake is in love with) and her boyfriend, Russ, and his
brother, Quinn, Blake received an invitation to a carnival from a strange, gorgeous girl, Cassandra.
Blake thought that the idea of going to the carnival is stupid, until he realized his brother stole the
invitation. Blake convinced his two friends to tag along with him, so they could go find Quinn. As the
characters entered the carnival, they learned that they have to survive seven deadly rides by dawn. The
first ride that the characters experienced was a carousel. Normally, if you rode on a carousel, you

trying to survive on the ride for a while, Blake realized that his mother?s boyfriend, Carl, was actually
the captain of the ship, which did not seem to be true. Blake finally found Quinn clinging from a rope
up atop the boat and they linked arms and jumped off the edge of the boat, into the deep blue sea. Four
rides done, three to go, Blake kept telling himself. The next ride was a mirror maze, the kind you
would find at a local carnival. As Blake stepped into the mirror maze, his slim, teenaged figure slowly
transformed into different creatures. Blake saw this clown, this extremely ugly clown, following him.
As Blake took a close look at it, he realized? it was Maggie! Maggie told Blake about how Russ and
Maggie crashed their bumper car, so they split up. Maggie and Blake quickly dodged through the
different mirrors together, so they could get out of that ride as soon as possible. As Blake and Maggie
were just about done with the whole maze, Blake accidentally let go of Maggie?s hand? and Maggie
went through a mirror and could not hear or see anything Blake did that tried to attract her attention.

Poem Analysis Billy Collins
In 2001, the American population was shocked by the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in
New York City. Two planes were hijacked and rammed into the twin towers. As soon as the first plane
hit, news reporters began to broadcast the event on every news station throughout the country. In the
next moment, a second plane crashed into the other building, and it was witnessed on live television. A
frenzy of panic and uncertainty engulfed the American society and patriotism soared. A multitude of
citizens was lost on this tragic day either by direct impact or saving the life of another. On September

symbolizes a person who fell victim to the invasion. Moreover, each letter represents a name of a real
story of a life that perished ( The Names, Literary Analysis on a poem by Billy Collins , 1). The next
line, Davis and Eberling, names falling into place , describes two men who in trying to save others, the
building collapsed on them (line 7). Davis was a port authority officer who rushed into the building to
save the victims but could not save himself. His last words were those of heroism: One more trip . He
then was crushed from the impact of falling concrete and the iron structure of the building. Dean
Eberling, the other man, was stuck in an elevator and allowed two women to escape. By the time it
was his turn to crawl out it was too late, and he did not make it ( The Names, Literary Analysis on a

Smart Grids Technologies Can Be Put Into Four Functional...
Generally, smart grids technologies can be put into four functional categories: Information collectors;
information assemblers, displayers, and assessors; information based controllers and energy resources.
Smart grids collected data from various types of sensors. These sensors measure performance related
characteristics of electricity system components. Assessors are used to analysis and display the
information they received from the devices. The information based controllers devices will use the
information that they received to control the other devices behavior to achieve the goal. Energy or
power resources include the technologies that can used to generate, store, or reduce demand for
electricity. However, renewable energy sources have been used in so many countries to reduce CO2
emissions and provide sustainable electrical power. The power electronic interface between a
renewable energy source and the grid can be used to control reactive power output and hence the
network voltage as well as curtailing real power output, and so enable the generator to respond to the
requirements of the grid. Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is one of the smart grid
technologies that have been used in many homes and business. Their objective is to enable to let the
users can use wattage readers to check how much juice their appliances and gadgets use. They
measure energy usage with less than one hour intervals, communicate usage data back to the utility

  • 2. Analysis Of The Epic Of Old Mali Erica Pangburn Professor Timothy Fitzgerald March 21, 2015 Primary Source Analysis An Epic of Old Mali Sundiata: an Epic of Old Mali was written by D.T. Niane and translated by G.C. Pickett. D.T. Niane was a historian who received this version of Sundiata s epic from Djeli Mamoudou Kouyaté, a griot. In fact, there is not a true author for this epic due to the fact that it has been transmitted orally for many years. This epic justly showed the type of culture Africa had at the time taken place and has defined the type of people who use to reside there. Sundiata: an Epic of Old Mali withholds many themes, but only some of importance: the transmission of the epic, politics, religion, and destiny. It can be argued that the orality of Sundiata versus the written translation is an important theme of the epic of old Mali. This story has been translated several times into several different languages. The epic of Sundiata originated as an oral epic performance that was performed by various African griots or bards. It was a challenge translating the oral tradition into written form. Thus concluded that orality is a better form of transmission than writing. Transmitting oral passages into writing can be easily falsified. Oral communication is more unquestioning than writing. Interesting enough, the griots are important persons who transmitted Sundiata: an Epic of Old Mali through many lineages. Griots were not only historical orators, but they were also important political figures. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Role Of Schizophrenia In Shakespeare s Hamlet My greatest fear is this brain of mine..The worst thing imaginable is to be terrified of one s own mind, the very matter that controls all that we are and all that we do and feel (Torrey). • 7. The System Of The Human Body Introduction The integumentary system is one of the largest and most integral organs in the human body, encompassing many structures and playing key roles in the protection and general function of the body (Zimmermann, 2014). As with everything however; things can go wrong, failures can occur causing the system to function at a level below what is required of it. It is at this point where we must be active in our response to these faults and subsequently utilise knowledge and techniques in order to contain these failures and sustain human life. Structure Encompassing structures like; hair, nails, nerves and glands, the integumentary system is evidently a hugely important and crucial organ within the human body (Science Net Links, 2015). Despite containing all of these structures however, the main component of the integumentary system is the skin. Consisting of three layers; epidermis, dermis and hypodermis, the skin plays key functional roles in the control of temperature within the body, production of essential vitamins, housing of sensory receptors, secretion of waste products and protection of the body (Kerr, 2010). The epidermis is the most superficial layer of the skin, composed of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, providing a waterproofed protective layer over the epidermis (Moore, Dalley, Agur 2010). The epidermis itself separates into several layers (Figure 1) at thicker areas of skin, for example palms of hands (Carola, Harley, Noback, 1992). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Autobiographical Memory Analysis Autobiographical memory is the memory of a person s life events and information (Fossati, 2013). One process that affects the accuracy of memory is coherence. Although, coherence is essential to maintain self esteem, self beliefs, and a stable sense of self (Conway, 2005). Individuals sometimes desire super memory due to memory fallibility. There are people who have superior memories such as individuals with Highly superior autobiographical memory (HSAM). Unfortunately, possessing such a memory comes with severe consequences, which renders super memory less appealing, especially as memories have such a significant influence on the self (James, 1950). Human memory can be changed, biased or even completely fabricated (Conway et al., 2004). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Studies of extreme violations of coherence show the vast importance of coherence to maintaining a self that can operate effectively in the world (Conway, 2005). Baddeley et al (1996) reported cases regarding hospitalised schizophrenics that illustrates this. In one case, a man truly believed he was a famous rock guitarist despite knowing he could not play guitar. Another patient believed he was a Russian chess grand master even though he could not speak Russian, nor had he been there, and he was often beaten at the game by other patients. Furthermore, Downes and Mayes (1994) reported a case regarding a man with a neuropsychological disorder. He was convinced he could remember having a terrible argument with his father the day before, although, he could also remember attending his father funeral years earlier. Instances such as this highlight the importance of coherence to healthy individuals. Individuals with a coherent self are more likely to have high self esteem, and increased well being (Csikzentmilhalkyi and Baettie, 1979). Finally, when the self is in line with the past the individual can be effective, achieve goals and relate to others (Bluck and Habermas, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Their efforts have met with varying degrees of success. One leader was Gandhi. There were many causes for India s independence movement was when India gained independence from Britain. One was British disrespected indian cultures. They outlawed sati. Which was when a wife burns herself after husband dies. Hindus were upset that this was outlawed. The NCAA marks their players as amateurs, therefore, they do not allow paying players. Judge Claudia Wilken ruled an injunction that schools in the NCAA would be allowed to provide players a trust fund in order to compensate players for using their names in broadcasting, merchandise or imaging. • 15. After The War Poem Analysis All the arms we need are for hugging. Unknown. Writers have used their voices and opinions to protest war and its effects of their own experiences of the war. Stephen Crane worked as a journalist during the Spanish American war and published the poem War Is Kind to show how people see the war, versus what the war was really like. Wilfred Owen wrote the poem Dulce et Decorum Est , which means It is sweet and right to die for your country . Owen fought during World War 1, where he also passed away. Tim O Brien served in the Vietnam War and wrote The Things They Carried, to explain what the soldiers had to go through during this war by carrying heavy materials and close friends deaths. Using his personal experiences and difficulties after the war, author Kevin Powers wrote The Yellow Birds after he returned home from serving in Iraq, explaining what goes through his mind after the war. Writers use imagery, irony, and structure to protest war. First of all, in the poem, Dulce et Decorum Est, author Wilfred Owen uses imagery to protest war. In lines 21 and 22, Owen states In all my dreams, before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. This quotation illustrates the image of someone dying during the war, and how corrupt it was on the author. After Owen states this, he then goes on to explain what they did with the bodies after someone would die, stating Behind the wagon that we flung him in, (Line 24), and If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood come gargling from the froth corrupted lungs, (Lines 27 28). By using these words, Owen creates the horrifying image of someone dying, how horrific it was, and how it was an everyday thing for the other soldiers to go through. In his book, The Yellow Birds, Kevin Powers uses imagery to protest war by stating what it was like to kill someone during the war and what it will do to your mind. Lines 4 6 state, or for that matter killing men and shooting them in the back and shooting them more times than necessary to actually kill them and it was like just trying to kill everything you saw sometimes. • 17. Cnn s Theory Of News Values News reporting in the UK can best be understood through the theory of news values News values are a set of theories that look to explain the reasons for stories appearing in the media. News values are general guidelines or criteria used by media outlets to determine how much prominence to give to a story (Spencer Thomas, 2013). The new values theories aim to explain why decisions are made to prioritise certain stories. A hard news story carries information in order of news value (Keeble, 2014), which explains why certain stories have much more coverage than others. Richard Keeble and Galtung and Ruge attempt to explain news values in their theories. Galtung and Ruge s theory of news values includes: negativity, proximity, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, the use of news values is supported by the target audience of a publication as the readership of the publication proves what news values make up their stories. For example, a newspaper such as The Sun may print stories about celebrity scandals and trends, which is highlighted in Keeble s theory of news values which includes human interest (sex and celebrities), fashion and sport. On the other hand, it could be said that news values are weak in helping us to understand news reporting. The news values theories appear to omit certain factors such as the brand image, target audience, the influence of ownership and social prejudice when considering the stories that publications prioritise. These factors could be seen as important news values, if they were included in the theories. Also, publications may choose to print stories not because of what they deem to be newsworthy, but because of partiality and bias. This is media gate keeping, whereby the press decides which information will go forward, and which will not (Lewin, 1943). They publish what they want readers to see. This could relate to political bias, whereby a publication prints positive stories that favour the political party that they support and prints negative stories about the political party that opposes the one that they support. Initially the first thing the viewer notes is that, both paintings are full body length portraits of women, who are focused directly at the viewer. The scale of both women figures, are fairly similar to human size and their position allows the viewer to get a feel of the uniqueness of each woman s personality, fashion and style. This is because Sartre describes the I as a form of transcendental form of thought, from which we produce and observe fantasies. It is, as if consciousness constituted the ego as a false representation of itself, as if consciousness hypnotized itself before this ego which it has constituted (Sartre, pg. 89). So the I creates a false representation of consciousness in order to escape from the real consciousness. The I is also a consciousness that thinks about itself. So, if one understands the I Think so as to make of thought a production of the I, one has already constituted thought as passivity and as state, that is to say, as object (Sartre, pg. 89). So not only can the I create fantasies, or false realities, but it can make them real enough to reflect on the false realities. With this regard, the consciousness focuses on observing and thinking about the realities that the I has created instead of the actual reality, and as such the I can be described as a farm of escapism. 2. • 29. Essay On Anger The effects of anger on health have more to do with duration than frequency and intensity. The normal experience of overt anger lasts only a few minutes. But the subtle forms of anger, such as resentment, impatience, irritability, grouchiness, etc., can go on for hours and days at a time. Consistent, prolonged levels of anger give a person a five times greater chance of dying before age 50. Anger elevates blood pressure, increases threat of stroke, heart disease, cancer, depression, anxiety disorders, and, in general, depresses the immune system (angry people have lots of little aches and pains or get a lot of colds and bouts of flu or headaches or upset stomachs). To make matters worse, angry people tend to seek relief from the ill moods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... You have an anger problem if some subtle form of anger that you may not even be aware of makes you do what is not in your best interest or keeps you from performing at your highest potential. This could mean something subtle, like putting a chilly wall between you and others or a continual impatience or low frustration tolerance that interferes with problem solving and performance competence. Whatever the form of anger, in persistence you run the risk of becoming a reactaholic, with your thoughts, feelings, and behavior totally controlled by whoever or whatever you re reacting to. The more reactive you are, the more powerless you feel; anger is ultimately a cry of powerlessness. Self Compassion and Compassion for Others Mastery of the three steps of self compassion and compassion for others makes us virtually immune to the ill effects of anger. The first step of self compassion is seeing beneath the symptom or defense (anger, anxiety, manipulation, obnoxious behavior) to the cause, which is some form of core hurt (feeling unimportant, disregarded, accused, devalued, guilty, untrustworthy, rejected, powerless, unlovable). Second, the core hurt must be validated (this is how I feel at this moment), and, third, changed (this behavior or event or disappointment or mistake does not mean that I m unimportant, not valuable or lovable.) Compassion for others is recognizing that their symptoms, defenses, and obnoxious behavior come from a core hurt, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It began appearing (in an older form) in what is now Nepal around 300 C.E., when Hindu Indo Aryans invaded the area from the south, displacing the Buddhist Kirantis. The now unified Nepal is made up of over one hundred ethnic groups, each with its own language and culture. Nepali is the national unifying language and is spoken by most Nepalis as a first or second language (O Rourke and Shrestha 2008, 9). Because of this, there are a number of related dialects that are spoken apart from the standard form, though it is becoming increasingly standardized (Riccardi 2003, 540). Accusations of police brutality could now be supported with video evidence instead of just a victim s word against an officer. While filming police during stops and quality of life policing can hold the officer accountable in incidents of police brutality, cell phone video footage doesn t always tell the whole story. In August, two Kansas police officers came under scrutiny after a 36 second video was posted on social media of them roughly restraining a suspect on the ground (Hunter). However, the police s body cam and dash cam footage told a different story: after the suspect, John Harrison was pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt, the police discovered the smell of marijuana coming from his car, that he was driving with a suspended license and had more than 20 warrants out for his arrest (Kiesling and Smith). The dash cam video shows Harrison resisting arrest, attempting to flee (Hunter) and punching one of the police officers (Kiesling and Smith). For a rare change, Letters from Iwo Jima shows the cultural aspect and daily life the Japanese soldiers experienced during the war. Although the film was given many positive reviews and was noted as one of the best films of 2006, it still received mixed emotions from both the Japanese and American public. One of the most shameful acts for a Japanese soldier to do is surrender, and it was very common for the soldiers to commit suicide before turning themselves in to the enemy. To commit suicide and avoid capture of the enemy was considered noble and heroic in the Japanese military. In a way, the soldiers were brainwashed into doing anything for the emperor of Japan and were told over and over how glorious it is to die on the battlefield for their country. During the film, one Japanese soldier points out that Japan will win the war due to the fact that the Americans show too much sympathy and emotion for human life, and do not have the same desire and will that the Japanese have. One of the main themes presented in Letters from Iwo Jima is the idea that good and evil always exist on both sides. Much of the time, war films tend to show favor to one country, leaving the audience close minded to what happens to the other side. She argues that students that are of equal intelligent level underperform due to subtle but powerful impacts of stereotypes, and that colleges can lessen these impacts by addressing the issue through creation of identity safety and diminishing of racial divides. This point is strongly proven through the study conducted by Woolf et al. (2008) where minority students underachieve in medical school due to decreased teacher interactions rooted in student classifications. If a safe identity space were created in this institution the classifications and ultimately racial divide would be nullified, leading to equal relationships amongst all students and teachers and ultimately opportunity for equal performance. However, this conflict did not end in 2005. This article was written in 2006, so anything within the last 10 years is not included. The conflict between the two counties still continues to this day and still remains a major problem. Israelis and Arabs have been fighting over Gaza on and off for decades now. Fallen Art who was directed by Tomasz Baginski showed three themes in his short film setting points on why war is bad through three different characters. His first theme is the man in a higher power uniform that s kicking the soldiers off the ladder who represents power in the military. Then the old guy in a lab coat taking the pictures, represents the value of military life by taking pictures of the soldiers once they land from the fall. Lastly the young fat guy towards the end of the film represents war as entertainment by creating art through the pictures given to him by the old guy. I believe the argument the director is trying to make through his film is that violence is senseless, and we should take in consideration those who are willing to go into war knowing the risks, and the endings it can lead to. While this piece was originally geared to satisfy younger girls, the piece goes far beyond the point of just being another piece of chick lit. Blake thought that the idea of going to the carnival is stupid, until he realized his brother stole the invitation. Blake convinced his two friends to tag along with him, so they could go find Quinn. As the characters entered the carnival, they learned that they have to survive seven deadly rides by dawn. The first ride that the characters experienced was a carousel. Normally, if you rode on a carousel, you would ride on plastic or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the bumper car ride, Blake, by himself, made his way to the next ride. It seemed like a regular swinging boat ride at first, however, then, turns into a real life ship, out at sea, with a blue whale trying to destroy it. After trying to survive on the ride for a while, Blake realized that his mother?s boyfriend, Carl, was actually the captain of the ship, which did not seem to be true. Blake finally found Quinn clinging from a rope up atop the boat and they linked arms and jumped off the edge of the boat, into the deep blue sea. Four rides done, three to go, Blake kept telling himself. The next ride was a mirror maze, the kind you would find at a local carnival. As Blake stepped into the mirror maze, his slim, teenaged figure slowly transformed into different creatures. Blake saw this clown, this extremely ugly clown, following him. As Blake took a close look at it, he realized? it was Maggie! Maggie told Blake about how Russ and Maggie crashed their bumper car, so they split up. Maggie and Blake quickly dodged through the different mirrors together, so they could get out of that ride as soon as possible. Collins then begins to recite names of all those lost or affected by the tragedy. Starting with the letter A and working down the alphabet all the way through Z. I started with A, with Ackerman, as it happened. The Young and Ziminsky, the final jolt of Z (lines 5,43). Each letter of the alphabet symbolizes a person who fell victim to the invasion. Moreover, each letter represents a name of a real story of a life that perished ( The Names, Literary Analysis on a poem by Billy Collins , 1). The next line, Davis and Eberling, names falling into place , describes two men who in trying to save others, the building collapsed on them (line 7). • 50. Smart Grids Technologies Can Be Put Into Four Functional... Generally, smart grids technologies can be put into four functional categories: Information collectors; information assemblers, displayers, and assessors; information based controllers and energy resources. Smart grids collected data from various types of sensors. These sensors measure performance related characteristics of electricity system components. Assessors are used to analysis and display the information they received from the devices. The information based controllers devices will use the information that they received to control the other devices behavior to achieve the goal. Energy or power resources include the technologies that can used to generate, store, or reduce demand for electricity. However, renewable energy sources have been used in so many countries to reduce CO2 emissions and provide sustainable electrical power. The power electronic interface between a renewable energy source and the grid can be used to control reactive power output and hence the network voltage as well as curtailing real power output, and so enable the generator to respond to the requirements of the grid. Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is one of the smart grid technologies that have been used in many homes and business. Their objective is to enable to let the users can use wattage readers to check how much juice their appliances and gadgets use. They measure energy usage with less than one hour intervals, communicate usage data back to the utility regularly like up to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
