Heroes Of The Enlightenment Analysis
In the video Heroes of the Enlightenment by Humanist Society of Australia Inc, the author explains
how during the seventeenth and eighteenth century European philosophy, science and politics were
reoriented as part of a movement known as the Age of Enlightenment. The objective of the
Enlightenment was to inform the public, aiming to persuade others about the main hero s ideas
within that era. As well as, how they shaped the world that we live in today.
The first hero of the enlightenment was Isaac Newton who was an innovator of modern science, and
he founded the theory of gravity. He believed knowledge was not only written in the bible but also
about observing what happens in our surroundings. Newton conceived gravity by watching an
apple that was falling from a tree. Where other people would see just an apple falling, Newton had
seen universal forces that were in action. Newton believed that God set up the universe in its eternal
state. Newton s contributions gave people access to knowledge within the world. ... Show more

He was put in prison for claiming that knowledge came from common sense, and not divine
revelation. Being imprisoned kept him from writing his biggest accomplishment the Encyclopedie.
When Diderot was released from jail, the encyclopedia was published. The pope censured the
Encyclopedie and demanded it be burned. After the encyclopedia being banned, it skyrocketed in
the publishing industry. The encyclopedia included ideas, trade skills that were explained in detail,
and philosophy craft. His book brought other authors to introduce human

Designing A Design And Building Health Care Facilities For...
In the past 15 years, modular constructions are widely used in all kinds of new buildings.
Architects prefer the way of built and design because of the sustainable and economic
performances. Also, it is an ideal way to improve the variability of a project significantly to adjust
to the development of the urban and growth of the population. Texas has the best health care
facilities and medical research institutes in the world and keep growing rapidly for decades. It
should be a promising design practice to apply modular construction to design and build health care
facilities for higher efficiency and sustainability. Although many researches had done in both filed
of design, there are only a few attention on strategies to combine them... Show more content on

The built environment should be as importance as the building process (Guenther, 2009).
As the trend of healthcare architecture research and design, sustainability is researched by scholars.
What is more important, the theory should be tested and practiced in planning, designing and
constructing. Varied strategies have been worked out by world wide designers and constructors.
Modular construction and design is one of the thousands of strategies. A research done by Wu
(2014) analyzed the ecological performance of modular constructions. By criteria of the LEED,
charts and calculations were finished to prove sustainable performance of buildings. Also, the
author summarized how modular construction works. First, designers should figure out specific
rule to determine the modular decomposition. Then, each modular was designed individually by
sustainable standard. At last, the modules would be combined together and test the function
requirement (Wu, 2014). The author also mentioned that a green building technology modular
system could be built up by combining with the theory and the characteristics of green building
technology system. Obviously, it is a unique way of design using modular as thinking and design
method, also can be called a theory, to meet the sustainable requirements. As a kind of construction
method, modular construction itself has own features including sustainability. A book

Pathological Academic Worryry
What problem(s) did the researchers study and why? In this study, researchers consider the potential
of three separate interventions intended to reduce pathological academic worry. Academic stress in
college students is linked to anxiety and depression, as well as generalized anxiety disorder. The
self administered treatments of worry exposure, expressive writing, and pulsed audio photic
stimulation studied to determine their effects on pathological academic worry.
Who participated in the study? 113 students from a large Southwestern university were recruited to
participate in this study through email or announcements. Participants came from a diverse ethnic
and academic background, with a number of them qualifying for mental disorders outside of
pathological academic worry. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Participants underwent a screening process to ensure eligibility and were then randomly assigned
to a treatment, or a control group. Those in the worry exposure group were trained to listen to one
worry image at a time for 20 30 minutes and use a 0 100 SUDS scale to measure anxiety. Students
placed in the expressive writing group were told to write about their academic worry in detail for 20
minutes per session. Audio photic stimulation was administered through headphones for 35 minutes
at a time, and programmed for worry reduction. The participants continued this for one month
before being evaluated again for pathological academic stress.
What were the results of this study? According to the data, all three interventions reduced worry to
an extent, while those in the waitlist control group showed no significant improvement. Expressive
writing was not as effective as worry exposure and audio photic stimulation. There was a higher
amount of reliable change for the worry exposure and audio photic stimulation groups in

Innate Knowledge And Plato s Theory Of Knowledge
Theory of knowledge is a yield of doubt. When we seriously we really know anything at all, we
innate lead into test of knowing, in the hope of being capable to discriminate the trustworthy beliefs
from such as are untrustworthy.
Knowledge is the principal intellectual attainment studies of epistemology. Virtually all theorists
agree that true belief is a necessary condition for knowledge, and it was once thought that
justification, when added to true belief, yield a necessary and sufficient condition for knowledge.
All of us have an innate knowledge, concepts, forms, or universals that are an essential and inborn
part that compose our mind. Without this rational knowledge would be impossible. Innate
knowledge is a field of epistemology, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since substances must be capable of independent existence, it appears that they cannot be
universals but must be particulars. However, this generated a dilemma since Aristotle also
believed that only knowledge were defined and the object of scientific knowledge ( Introducing
Grace Wester Thinker ). Thus if the substance is knowable, they cannot be particulars. But now it
looks as if substance cannot exist at all since they cannot be either knowledge or particulars.
According to Plato, knowledge can be gained by researching within, but Plato also addressed the
common man s potential for achieving knowledge despite his deficient condition in comparison to
the Platonic idea. In the famous allegory of the cave in the Republic, Plato offers a quite realistic
view of the common man as being imprisoned in a world of becoming. This prisoner takes
pictures on the wall for reality. In order to feed from this illustration, he has to turn around toward
truth. The prisoners, however, are not able to turn around themselves without help from the
outside. But when the prisoner have a chance to go outside the cave he realize that the true image
he see in the cave has a true image in reality. Plato believes that one can achieve real knowledge
only if one focuses on the moral

Public Opinion of the Affordable Care Act
Nearly two years ago the enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was
signed into place by President Obama. This signature placed by President Obama has never
rested especially well with the American public. As to be expected, the views on health care laws
are colored by partisanship. Overall, the opinions towards the health car law have wavered slightly
since the passing in March of 2010, and support has yet to reach favorable in 2014.
Role of Public Opinion
Even with the public being well aware of the elements of the health care law, particularly
individual mandates, there is still a lack of understanding of it. According to Pinto (2013), 41
percent of Americans felt they had a good understanding of what the new law entailed, but even
after two years and implementation the number has increased just six points to 47 percent. The
purpose behind public opinion was to make more affordable health care insurance for uninsured
citizens originally (Pinto, 2013). Supporters of the Affordable Care Act believed that government
run insurance companies could successfully lower rates by using greater leverage than the private
industry (Pinto, 2013). Supporters of such public plans, believed that a small set of companies had
control for local health insurance markets. Having such public opinion at such a huge national level
meant insurance companies would cooperate. Many Democratic Politicians were publically in
favor of public opinion for many reasons

The Environmental Effects Of Landfills
Not many people know that their trash ends up in a landfill or what it is doing to the
environment. When trash ends up in a landfill it builds up in to a lager pile, starts to release
toxic gases, and pollutes the ground it sits on. Most of the time the trash is burned to make
more room for more trash. Landfills have a big effect on the environment. Landfills make gas
composition. Is there a way to use LFG to our benefit? How many landfills are being used for
their gases in the United States? Some companies are working on using the toxic gases to our
benefit. Even animals are being affected by the trash in landfills. What can people do to help
reduce the trash in landfills? When trash ends up in a landfill it does not decompose like compost
it just sits there because there is lack of oxygenand low amounts of moisture, so it does not break
down very rapidly. Because the trash just sits there, it starts to release gases like sulfur dioxide,
methane, ammonia, hydrogen, and nitrogen oxide. All of those are very toxic for the environment.
The gases in a landfill can move thought soil and collect inside building or homes that are nearby.
These gases can cause health problems for people that breathe them in or are nearby.
Once hydrogen sulfide and ammonia are in the air, it causes coughing, and irritation to people s
eyes, nose, and even the throat. Out of both chemicals, hydrogen sulfide has a foul smell, such as,
rotten eggs while ammonia has a stronger foul smell, such as

President Truman And President Dwight D. Eisenhower
President Harry Truman and President Dwight D. Eisenhower were each president during the Cold
War. Harry Truman became president during the end of World War II in 1945. His final term ended
in 1953. Dwight Eisenhower became president in the midst of the Cold war in 1953 and his last
term ended on 1961. Truman was Democratic and Eisenhower was Republican. They each had
many occasions when their policies had similar intentions, but they went about them differently.
Each wanted to end the fighting and to limit the spread of communism. They each also wanted to
help strengthen other parts of the world. They tried to achieve these issues by enacting foreign
policies in military, political and economic situations. Truman and Eisenhower each wanted to help
limit the increasing issue of communism. One approach they did was getting involved physically
and militarily in the countries that were in need. The peace conference at Potsdam was a failure,
because communist Russia still stood on their own and as their own separate nation. The Soviet
Union had already succeeded in conquering Poland, and much of Europe splitting up Germany.
After Hitler committed suicide, the main obstacle for the United States and many other countries
was to avoid the looming threat of communism. Truman created the Truman Doctrine to possibly
stop or postpone this issue. I believe, he argued, that it must be the policy of the United States to
support free people who are resisting attempted subjugation by

Alcohol Dehydrogenase
Proteins are the main building blocks that cells are assembled from and they make up most of the
cell s dry mass. They contain important elements such as oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and
amino acids. Proteins also help provide the cell with shape and structure. There are some proteins,
which are embedded in the plasma membrane, and they form channels and pumps. These channels
and pumps control the passage of nutrients and small molecules in and out of the cell. In addition,
some proteins send important messages to other cells or are signal indicators. The proteins that are
embedded in the plasma membrane act as motors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The protein Alcohol Dehydrogenase can be found in our stomach and in our liver. In addition, it
can assist in generation of aldehydes and ketones. According to the article, How Alcohol is
Metabolized in the Human Body,
Alcohol dehydrogenase is the workhorse of the alcohol enzymes. it breaks down the majority of
the alcohol that enters the human body. Alcohol dehydrogenase is actually the name for a family
of enzymes which break down alcohol each of which has a slightly different molecular structure.
Researchers have identified as many as 10 varieties of the alcohol dehydrogenase molecule.
All of them bring about the same chemical reaction the difference is that some varieties of alcohol
dehydrogenase work more efficiently than others. As we shall see below, these variations in the
alcohol dehydrogenase molecule can explain why some individuals react differently to alcohol than
others.
Based off this quote, alcohol dehydrogenase is an enzyme. An enzyme is a protein that catalyzes
chemical reactions. In addition, alcohol dehydrogenase often referred to as AdhD, can be found in
all organisms. Adhd can be used in food, pharmaceutical, and fine chemical industries for the
productions of aldehydes, ketones, and chiral alcohols. (Machielsen et al., 2006). Alcohol
dehydrogenase is made up of 3 main components, Zinc, Ethanol, and NAD. According to the article,

Scapegoats In Romeo And Juliet
The search for the scapegoat is the easiest of all hunting expeditions. These words spoken by
Dwight D. Eisenhower apply to The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. In this situation, a young man
and woman commit suicide in the name of love, since the stars will not allow them to be
together. Multiple scapegoats lie in this story of the tragic deaths: the fault of the families for not
allowing the two to marry, the fault of Friar Lawrence for marrying Romeo and Juliet and giving
them the materials to kill themselves, or the stupidity of youth. Fate brought Romeo and Juliet
together, even when the stars tried to keep them apart. The belief of the greater power that guides
the lives of men known as fate plays a large role in Romeo and Juliet.

Christianity In The Early Middle Ages Essay
Christianity in Europe during the Medieval Period encountered many hindrances such as
corruption, sex, the Avignon Captivity, and the Great Schism. However, even though the church
encountered many controversies which eventually undermined the foundation of the church,
monastic revival reformed the church and ultimately restored the original beliefs.
Corruption was present in many forms within the church during the medieval period. Many clergy
members were landowners in late medieval Christianity and if they were not, the church would
count on the nobles to share their profits from their peasants work. (Christian History, 2015) It
was also familiar for members of clergy to buy their positions in order to obtain power and wealth.
Priests were also known for visiting taverns, gambling, and having orgies with quarrels and
blasphemy. (Arnold, 1999)
From the Early Middle Ages, through the reign of Charlemagne, the church accentuated the
importance of clerical celibacy, however by Carolingian times, it became apparent that clerical
celibacy would be impossible to enforce. The church disclosed that not all ... Show more content on

Castration Anxiety And Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Texas Chainsaw Massacre follows Sally and her friends when they take a trip to see her
grandfather s old home, unfortunately when they wander outside the property they get attacked
by the family of cannibals living next door. The sole survivor is Sally. Teeth follows teen virgin
Dawn who after being raped realizes she has vagina dentata, she then harnesses it with the intent
of avenging herself against those who have wronged her. In order to compare these two films, I
will be analyzing how each interacts with the concept of castration anxiety. Castration anxiety as
outlined by Freud is when a boy looks at his mother and realizes she does not have a penis, he
views his mom as castrated and thus to him his mother is a warning of his castration. Carol
Clover in Her Body Himself and Dumas in Horror and Psychoanalysis have elaborated on this
concept in the genre of the horror explaining that castration anxiety is not only fear of penile harm
but of one s power being taken away.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is somewhat problematic because while the idea of a femme fatale is progressive Dawn
border s on being regressive specifically in the final sequence of the film. At the end of Teeth Dawn
has hitched a ride only to find the driver wants a sexual favor in return. Dawn then looks at the
camera smiles and turns around ready to seduce the man. The song You Did by Chuck Prophet
starts playing giving the scene an upbeat almost sensual tone. This gives Dawn agency as she is no
longer a victim and thus no longer a fully sympathetic character, instead, she is on the verge of
becoming the castrating monster men

You Cant Cross The Sea Merely By Standing And Staring At...
When Rabindranath Tagore states You can t cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the
water, he is suggesting that you can t achieve your life goals just by thinking and hoping about
them. You actually have to work very hard and try to achieve that goal. The author is claiming that
you actually needto work for your goals. For example the Everest climbers had a lot to risk and a
lot to lose but they still climbed the mountain anyway because they knew that they wouldn t get to
the top of that mountain just from hoping they would get carried up there.
This quote relates to extreme sports because if you want to do an extreme sport really badly like
going wingsuit flying you can t just look at the helicopter take off to drop the people. You
actually have to want to jump out of that helicopter and take the risk yourself. As we see in the in
the article, A Solemn Warning to Wingsuit Flyers , that a man named Geoffrey Robson died due
to wingsuit flying. But that man new the risks of the sport and he took it anyway, because he
didn t want to be the one that stares at the ocean hoping he crossed it. He wanted to be the one
who crossed it before the other guy got there to stare at it even if it meant he was risking his life to
do so. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Civil Argument Of Epistemology
For decades, there has been an open deliberation over whether knowledge is intrinsic or if it
springs itself from life experiences: the civil argument of epistemology. Epistemology is the
investigation of knowledge and its techniques and legitimacy. Individuals from philosophers to
scientists to psychologists have argued their perspectives, yet even today the contention is not yet
settled. Personally, I believe that it bodes well for knowledge to originate from experiences. Three
philosophers that are solid proponents for the belief that knowledge is derived from experiences are
Gaston Bachelard, Immanuel Kant, and John Locke. One of the great epistemologists was Gaston
Bachelard who was more commonly known as a philosopher of science. ... Show more content on

Kant concurred with empiricists that concepts without perceptions are empty (lonestar). He
acknowledged that concepts and ideas cannot constitute knowledge alone and that innate ideas
do not constitute knowledge at all. This brought about his conviction that there must be
experience(s) in life for there to be knowledge. His theory was that there are two sorts of
reasoning to acquire knowledge: posteriori reasoning and priori reasoning. The posteriori
reasoning depends upon experience in the world that provides us with information. For
example, if I said that Barack Obama was the president of the United States in 2010, I would
only know that this is true through experience; I would not be able to determine this through an
analysis of the concepts of president or Barack Obama. In contrast, a priori reasoning does not
rely on experience to inform it, but to create the knowledge. Kant believed that with priori
reasoning, the dynamic mind relates and understands experiences in terms of causes and effects
where an event takes place and causes an experience to happen with the effect of knowledge being
gained. Kant s crucial insight here is to argue that experience of a world as we have it is only
conceivable if the psyche provides an efficient organizing of its representations; the mind makes
deductions prior to experiences, but can only truly experience something in the event that it obtains
knowledge from the

How Did Julie Andrews Impact The Music Community
Julie Andrews has left her mark on a myriad of awards, titles, roles, styles, and even beloved
characters we all know and love with her natural grace and elegance. She has also experienced
one of the most fruitful, illustrious careers of all time. But even more significantly, Andrews has
impacted the music community by bringing a new air of elegance to the stage, raising the bar
of vocal ability standards internationally, and expressing the beauty of music through her
impeccable, crystalline voice. Born on October 1st, 1935, to Barbara Ward Wells (a pianist) and
Edward Charles (Ted) Wells in Walton On Thames, Surrey, England. Barbara and Ted divorced
soon after the outbreak of World War II, and Barbara was remarried to Ted Andrews, who would
make an essential and insurmountable impact on young Andrew s life. Back when the now
seventy nine year old performer was only eight, her stepfather decided to get her singing lessons.
Her teacher Lillian Stiles Allen was hired promptly and began instructing young Andrews in

Our views of world conflicts such as war are influenced by the part of the world in which we live.
When exploring media coverage of discord, it is important to think about where the author is from
and how it has influenced the way he/she has portrayed disharmony. Reports on a world conflict
can express extremely different views depending on the social values and understandings of the
writers. One must read articles that address the issue of war with cultural relativism by taking into
account the local values and historical experiences of the writer. By neglecting this approach, a

The Palestinians were convinced that this was a deliberate murder. Three days later a young
Palestinian picked up a stone from the ground and threw it at an Israeli patrol. His friends followed

Palestinian intellectuals interpreted this action as an attempt of their youth to shake themselves

generations Israel s domination of Jerusalem had gone largely unchallenged. The fighting
continued and the casualties that resulted were high. Most of the 1,300 deaths were Palestinians.
In 1993 the international community attempted to find a permanent solution by creating the

The Temperance movement was an organized effort to encourage people to ban the consumption of
alcohol. The movement was mostly women whose husbands had uncontrolled drinking habits.
Alcohol was also being blamed for health issues like anemia, cancer, high blood pressure and
nerve damage. This lead to the ban of alcohol, which was called Prohibition. Anemia is the
abnormally low count of red blood cells. This can trigger tiredness and cause someone to become
lightheaded. Scientists believe drinking alcohol can increase the risk of cancer because the body
converts alcohol into acetaldehyde (a potent carcinogen). Having high blood pressure can lead to
kidney and heart disease. Alcoholic neuropathy is the form of nerve damage alcohol

Motives For Colonization In New England And Chesapeake...
New England and the Chesapeake Region were both settled primarily by people of English origin,
however, by 1700 they had both transformed into two unique societies. This is because their
motives for colonization, their geographies, and their governments were all different. For example,
the New England colonies typically had much harsher winters than the Chesapeake region and their
people came to America to escape religious persecutionin their mother country. On the other hand,
the people of the Chesapeake region experienced warmer summers and came there in search of
gold. As previously stated, different motives for colonization were partially responsible for
transforming the New Englandand Chesapeake regions into two unique societies. The New England
colonies were formed for religious reasons whereas the colonies of the Chesapeake region were
formed for economic purposes. To emphasize, the people that settled in the New England colonies
had been previously punished by their king, Henry VIII, for being non anglican and in turn they
left the church of England for the Netherlands (they became known as separatists due to how they
separated themselves from the Church). The Netherlands didn t happen to work out for the
separatists, so they went to the New World and settled in the New England region. Based on this, it
could also be said that the separatists were seeking permanent settlement (as they wanted to escape
religious persecution) whereas those in the Chesapeake region

A Yellow Raft In Blue Water Relationships
I find a letter from parents directing their concerns for a their child. I take a moment to appreciate
the time and effort the parents place into the letter, but soon after I throw it away. Rayona, one of
three main characters of A Yellow Raft in Blue Water placed in the same situation, dwells on the
letter for longer and decides to keep it. To Rayona, the letter is much more significant because it
reminds her of the little things, talking to her mother, talking to her father, talking to whoever.

Christine and Lee grew up under the care of Aunt Ida. They are not blood related, yet the two

Christine regrets that her few last words to Lee were how he had to enlist, how he couldn t be

Christine and Dayton. They are not blood related, and they did not believe they were, but Dayton

All Seven Deadly Sins Committed At Church Bake Sale
The deadly sins that are committed so easily we don t even consider them deadly any longer. Sins
such as Pride, lust, and gluttony. The Catholic Church teaches us that there are seven deadly sins,
greed, sloth, envy, lust, gluttony, pride, and wrath. According to the satirical newspaper The Onion
s short article All Seven Deadly SinsCommitted at Church Bake Sale, these sins are so frequently
perpetrated in everyday society that even a holy church function is unable to go without. The
author mentions, In total, 347 individual acts of sinwere committed at the bake sale, with nearly
every attendee committing at least one of the seven deadly sins... (201)
The sin of pride. A sin we all carry out daily. Whether it be the proud parent whose child made the
honor roll and Flaunts that fact with a bumper sticker on their Toyota Camry, or even the Essex
county college student who displays their school spirit around campus. The sin of pride is so
consistently committed, it s become more second nature and less described a sin. The short article
provides a plethora of examples depicting pride at the church bake sale. For one, the author states

Dorothy L. Sayers’ Gaudy Night Essay
Dorothy L. Sayers Gaudy Night
When Gayle Wald wrote, Sayers s career writing detective stories effectively ends with Gaudy
Night (108), she did not present a new argument, but continued the tradition that Gaudy Night does
not center on the detective story. Barbara Harrison even labeled Dorothy Sayers s Lord Peter
/Harriet Vane books, Strong Poison, Gaudy Night, and Busman s Honeymoon, as deliriously happy
ending romances (66). The label stretches the definition of a romance, but Gaudy Night indeed has
very little to do with crime. Sayers encrypted the real story within her detective novel. This story
behind the story narrates love and human relationships. In fact, the crimes in Gaudy Night only

We usually think of crypts as graves or coded messages, similar to the letter in Have His
Carcasse. The notion of a crypt, however, contains a deeper psychological meaning. Crypts deal
with the ideas of introjection and incorporation. These concepts identify the alternative ways in
which the psyche handles trauma. When the psyche introjects a trauma, the trauma melds into
the subconscious. If the psyche successfully assimilates the trauma, it unites with the rest of the
psyche, much like a cube of ice (the trauma) melting in a glass of water (the psyche).
Incorporation occurs when trauma embeds itself into the psyche, but remains separate and,
therefore, separable. If we return to the idea of the psyche as a glass of water, incorporation
resembles what happens when a Ping Pong ball (the trauma) drops into a glass of water. The
ball remains a lump in the psyche. Jacques Derrida wrote about the crypt sealing the loss of the
object, but also marking the refusal to mourn . . . I pretend to keep the dead alive, intact, safe
(save) inside me, but it is only to refuse, in a necessarily equivocal way, to love the dead as a
living part of me, dead save in me, through the process of introjection, as happens in so called
normal mourning ( Foreword 17). The tomb stands then as an incorporation of the trauma of death.
We physically mark the place of rest as a mirror of our inability to assimilate that trauma

So be it
Will the United States or the Soviet Union continue propaganda or resort to an attack? Many
democracies across the world like North America, Western Europe, Japan grew in prosperity after
World War II ended. The United States became the world s wealthiest and most powerful country.
These democracies rivaled the United States economically. The United States and the Soviet Union
had many differences that didn t cause a full fled war, but a quiet, propaganda and secretive filled
war that pushed both to the edge. This was known as the Cold Warof 1945 1991. The main causes
of the war were sphere of influence, Ideology, and military factors. The contradiction of who threw
the first punch still occurs today; in this case, the Soviets were most responsible for the Cold War
because of the, Iron Curtain speech, fears of the West, and the spread of communism. In conclusion,
despite the evidence that supports the United States, the Soviet Union was most responsible for the
Cold War. In the Iron Curtain Speech given by Winston Churchill gave in Fulton that describes his

although it was proven difficult to meet with them due to their own work constraints. Thus, I
decided to achieve the best results by arranging a group interview, allowing all the solicitors to be

data from a discussion, as the solicitors were also able to interact with one another giving barring
opinions. Participants were firstly contacted via email and provided an overview, to explain the

Chapter Four: Data Analysis
The aim of chapter four is to investigate whether the agency worker has acquired more individual
rights and protection from recent legislation, such as the AWR 2010. In addition, the thesis
explores agency workers wellbeing, and whether the development of the doctrine of vicarious
liability, through case law, has added further confusion when a claim is being issued by the agency
worker against the end user. To achieve this, a focus group interview was conducted and a survey
was distributed.
Through this section, I will detail the use of discourse analysis and explore the perceptions of
agency workers, discovered from the survey issued to agency workers, interviews conducted with
solicitors.

Agency Worker is the title given to workers who are a party to a triangular relationship, this thesis
has explored whether being classified as an agency worker is a limitation on the individual due to

Stealing Carol Ann Duffy Essay
In the poem Stealing by Carol Ann Duffy the speaker attempts to steal the intangible emotions of
others. The speaker does not steal for material gain, rather for emotional gain. The speaker is
ambiguous, (henceforth referred to as he ) and appears to be answering a question. In this dramatic
monologue Duffy explores violent and self destructive behavior in order to impart the speakers
desolate attitude towards life.
Duffy uses abrupt, and violent language to communicate the discord in the speaker s life. my
breath ripped / out in rags (18 19) is a violent statement that is disjointed through enjambment; this
technique of ripping apart the sentences to different lines adds to the feeling of discontinuity in the
speakers life. This sense of discontinuity gives the reader a feeling of discontent. The self
destructive tone is mixed with a sneering attitude to create the impression of being an outcast. The

psychopaths. I wanted him, a mate / with a mind as cold as the slice of ice / within my own

The Narrative of the Captivity and the Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, published in 1682,

it came to be used as a didactic Jeremiad, leading its Calvinist audience back towards God s path

Upon returning from pillaging another English town, an Indian offers Mary Rowlandson a gift of a
Bible, which he had stolen from a dead English townsperson. The usage of the word plunder
connoted the violent force used to obtain the Bible. This enhances the significance of the irony
of Rowlandson overlooking the fact that someone was murdered in order for her to receiver her
gift. Rowlandson s Calvinist views, which made her believe that God brought the Bible to her,
outweighed any sympathy for nay anonymous English person, and the intended demographic
(late 15th century Calvinists) of readers of this captivity narrative would have agreed. An
alternative example presents itself when Rowlandson attempts to convince Goodwife Joslin, a
very pregnant captive who was becoming impatient and wanted to go home, not to run away., I
wished her not to run away by any means [...] We opened the Bible and lightened on Psalm 27
[...] Wait on the Lord, Be good of courage, and he shall strengthen thine Heart, wait I say on the

means deteriorating their own safety and health, proving that she will lack sympathy for humans
in favor of devotion to her God. Mary Rowlandson s feelings toward food, even in times of
starvation, are shaped by her belief that God provides (or does not provide) everything. Three

independent and self assertive, disregarded the request. Their conflict reached a crucial period in

of the most liked political leaders in the country, caused Victoria and Albert to lose some of the

A dependence grows between employee and leader in which the employee has grown
accustomed to the leader giving orders and directions, and makes every effort to follow such
guidance to the letter. This dependence does not bode well in situations of high stress and
shortened reaction times. As General HonorГ© stated, the first part of the leader s job is to set
people on the right path ( A Military General s Leadership Lessons, 2009). This happens when the
leader gives the initial order. In this case, it was to evacuate the people out of harms way. The plan
was then laid out for the authorities to execute.
What happened, was that the dependance the authorities placed on the plan of execution did not
allow themselves to modify the plan of execution when the situation changed. The leaders were
bossing the authorities around in such a manner that the right path and desired end result were
forgotten. When this occurs, and the execution loses all forward motion because the initial plan is
not being followed to the letter, the leaders who were barking orders have to devide their time up

Effects Of Poe s Single Effect On The Black Cat
Edgar Allen Poe has many standards that helped lay the ground work to his single effect of a
short story. He thought short stories ought to be able to be read at one sitting. This allows the
reader to get the entire effect of the story at one time, rather than having to stop reading the story
and having to recapture the feeling of the story after returning. In writing, he attempted to try to and
capture a unifying emotion; the emotion of horror. He felt that the effect of the story should be
obvious to everyone who reads the story. Poe s single effect was attended to show human behavior;
to see how human reactions would be if these stories actually occurred.

An Ice Calorimeter Determination of Reaction Enthalpy
Thermochemistry: An Ice Calorimeter Determination of Reaction
Enthalpy
D. F. Nachman
6/23/2010
Abstract: An ice calorimeter was used to study the reaction of magnesium metal and 1.00M sulfuric
acid solution: Mg(s) + H2SO4(aq) в†’пЂ MgSO4(aq) + H2(g). We found the experimental molar
enthalpy of reaction to be О”H = 355 В± 17 kJ/mol at 0В°C, 24% lower than the textbook value of
О”HВ° = 466.9 kJ/mol, reported at 25В°C.
Introduction
Whether a chemical reaction occurs spontaneously or is driven by an outside force, it almost always
exchanges energy with the surroundings. Energy exchange can occur as work or as heat flow.
When a reaction occurs under constant pressure conditions, we call the heat portion of the energy
exchanged the enthalpy change of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Calculations
The reaction between magnesium metal and sulfuric acid released heat, which melted some of
the ice in the calorimeter. Because ice takes up more volume per gram than liquid water, this
melting produced a drop in pipette readings. For each gram of ice that melted, the volume change
was calculated from the density values of water and ice at 0 В°C: dice пЂЅпЂ 0.9157 g
1 mL
, so the specific volume of ice =
1 mL
0.9157 g
пЂЅпЂ 1.0920 mL ice
1 g H2O dliquid пЂЅпЂ 0.9998 g
1 mL
, so the specific volume of liquid =
1 mL
0.9998 g
пЂЅпЂ 1.0002 mL
1 g
The difference between the two specific volume values gives the volume change per gram of
melting ice: 0.0918 mL/g.
The estimated total volume change is shown in Figure 1. Because the slope of the data trend after
the reaction did not match the slope of the data trend before the reaction, using the equations of the
trend lines gave a range of О”V values:
О”Vmin = 0.8989 0.5914+[630*( 0.00005+0.0003)]=0.3075+[630*0.00025]=0.465 mL
О”Vavg = 0.8989 0.5914+[720*( 0.00005+0.0003)]=0.3075+[720*0.00025]=0.488 mL
О”Vmax = 0.8989 0.5914+[810*( 0.00005+0.0003)]=0.3075+[810*0.00025]=0.510 mL
These volume changes correspond to the following masses of ice melt:
0.465 mL melt пЂЎпЂ 1 g ice
0.0918 mL melt
= 5.07 g ice minimum
0.488 mL melt пЂЎпЂ 1 g ice
0918 mL melt

The Importance Of Information On The Internet Of Things
The Internet of Things speeds up awareness and response to events. It has a wide domain of
application for instance in industries such as manufacturing, transportation and public sectors, faster
response time not only improves the output, it also decreases the occurrence of a hazard.
Taking an example of any factory, a temperature sensordeployed on critical machines on the floor
can send readings before a failure is about to happen and action can be taken before in hand.
Likewise, deploying a sensor on oil pipelines can raise an alert and slow down or stop the
pumping of oil as a response to the alert which can help prevent a huge loss. Now that we

1.5 Concept of Fog Computing:
The fog extends the cloud to be closer to the things that produce and act on IoT data. These
devices, called fog nodes, can be deployed anywhere with a network connection: on a factory
floor, on top of a power pole, alongside a railway track, in a vehicle, or on an oil rig. Any device
with computing, storage, and network connectivity can be a fog node. Examples include industrial
controllers, switches, routers, embedded servers, and video surveillance cameras. IDC estimates
that the amount of data analyzed on devices that are physically close to the Internet of Things is
approaching 40 percent.
Fog computing, also known as fogging/edge computing, it is a model in which data, processing and
applications are concentrated in devices at the network edge rather than existing almost entirely in

ATN is the Sydney flagship television station of the Seven Network in Australia. The licence,
issued to a company named Amalgamated Television Services, a subsidiary of Fairfax, was one of
the first four licences (two in Sydney, two in Melbourne) to be issued for commercial television
stations in Australia. It began broadcasting on 2 December 1956.
The station formed an affiliation with GTV 9 Melbourne in 1957, in order to share content. In
1963, Frank Packer ended up owning both GTV 9 and TCN 9, so as a result the stations switched
their previous affiliations. ATN 7 and HSV 7 joined to create the Australian TelevisionNetwork,
which later became the Seven Network. ATN 7 is the home of the national level Seven News
bulletins.

Life Of George W. Bush
Life of George W. Bush
George W. Bush was born in July 6, 1946, in New Haven, Connecticut; George W. Bush was the
43rd president of the United States. He won the Electoral College vote in 2000, in one of the
closest and most controversial elections in American history. Bush also led the United States
response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and initiated the Iraq War. Before his presidency, Bush was a
businessman and served as governor of Texas.
George Walker Bush was born on July 6, 1946, in New Haven, Connecticut. He is the oldest of
six children of George Herbert Walker Bush and Barbara Pierce Bush. The Bush family had been
involved in business and politics since the 1950s. Bush s grandfather, Prescott Bush, was a former
Wall Street banker and progressive Republican senator from Connecticut, and his father was a
businessman, diplomat, and vice president and president of the United States.
In 1948, George H.W. Bush moved him and his family to Midland, Texas, where he made his
fortune in the oil business. George spent most of his childhood in Midland, attending school there
until the seventh grade. The family moved to Houston in 1961, and George W. Bushwas sent to
Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. There he was an all around athlete, playing baseball,

The Event Of Spotlight Dance Academy
40 individuals were a part of Spotlight s outstanding production on February 6th, 2016. Each
year, Spotlight Dance Academy has a Kick Off event for the purpose of performing all the
routines for their competition season. This event is reserved for their elite troupe dancers to
evince their hard work and takes place in Grand Haven High School s performing arts center. An
event like this allows for the patrons to be entertained and the performers to express themselves
while participating in a sport they enjoy. For weeks in advance, my friends and I were planning
our car pools to support our friend. The day of the event, we all met and traveled in a few cars
down to Grand Haven High School, including a small detour to Starbucks. Once we arrived, we
had to wait in line for the doors to open. It was general admission so we got there early to ensure
all 15 of us could sit together. While standing in line, I began to observe the people. Surprisingly,
there was a plethora of people at this event, including parents, grandparents, and close friends.
Clearly, the people who were in attendance were here to see a specific individual. Many of them
carried flowers or signs to support their dancer. This created a celebratory and joyful atmosphere.
Soon, the doors opened and we were allowed to choose our seats. We were some of the first to be
seated so I continued to watch the various supporters file into the auditorium. While waiting for the
show to start, I was taking in my surroundings.

The Causes And Consequences Of The Great Famine
Food is the most colorful part of the day. With its gastronomic range, the possibilities are endless.
Everyone in the world depends on food, whether to experience that burst of flavor in the mouth or
to survive. But when there is a shortage of food, what is to blame? The people who eat and
cultivate it? Or factors outside their control? The Great Famineis an example of this question.
The Great Famine was caused by blight that accidently came from America and affected the
potatoes growing in Ireland and in turn, affected the Irish. This was especially hard on the Irish
because in 1845, the potato was their main source of food. They had an average of 14 spuds a day
so they relied heavily on them. Potatoes only lasted two to three months so ... Show more content on

The farmers were the first to emigrate via steam boats to England and Scotland. They were the
wealthier people but as time passed, the people emigrating became poorer. 75% were laborers and
servants. These kinds of people found it hard to pay for the ride over to America. But it didn t
matter. 1 ВЅ million left Ireland in 1847 1851 for NY. Economic expansion in the US with
industrial depression in Ireland increased migration. The fees to cross the Atlantic Ocean were
high and the Parliament regulated it. Adult was single soul and children under 12 were half
soul. It was hard to tell who was what age because of lack of passports. At first when they left,
they were jubilant. But there were too many on the ships and it was like hell on sea. The voyage
took about six weeks or three months. There were too few doctors for medical inspection so
many that were on the ships were sick. The sick were sent to St. John as a dumping ground yet
they all couldn t be regulated and a plethora died on the ships. Many were so used to death and
inhumane conditions at sea that they didn t care if they were sleeping next to a corpse. They were
without fear or emotion (BBC, 1995). When people left, it was a chain migration (Mulrooney, pg.
21). They emigrated in continuous succession groups of two or more and usually had a job or
relative waiting. The movement depended on the placement of family. They

Comparison Of Anne Of The Green Gables
To begin with, the primary aim of this research paper is to investigate the similarities of Lucy
Maud Montgomery with the main protagonist of her book, Anne of Green Gables. This will be
accomplished by looking back at the early life of the author, her childhood, and the hardships
that she had overcame. Also, several works that had interpreted and analyzed Montgomery s life
had a substantial contribution to this research paper. The novel Anne of the Green Gables was
written by Lucy Maud Montgomery in the year 1908. In particular, the Anne of the Green Gables
was held as a children s novel. The story followed the life and journey of Anne Shirley, an 11 year
old orphan child. Notably, the novel had touched the hearts of many people across the globe, thus it
is unquestionable when a mini series adaptation of the novel was released in many... Show more

Actually, it was co authored by Benjamin Lefebvre. The book tackles the way the book had
dominated the Canadian readers and their perception on the hidden meanings that exists in the
Anne of the Green Gables. Additionally, Ned Bustard s book titled Anne of Green Gables
Comprehension Guide contains method of dissecting the novel penned by Montgomery. As a
matter of fact, several authors had taken a special interest in the life story of Lucy Maud

Civil War Research
In my research I hope to explore the range of resources that will allow me to answer my
questions. Some of the sources needed would include: oral histories and personal narratives from
key participates like Jose Figueres (Don Peep), Henrietta Boggs, Manuel Mora, Caldron and more.
I believe the oral histories will allow me to interpret the ideologies each person shared before and
during the Civil War. Other documents that I believe will have a vital influence on my history are
documents from the United StatesGovernment. The C.I.A has multiple documents that were
produced in the years leading up to and during the Costa Rican Civil War. I believe these
documents will allow me to explore the role the United States played. Finally I also hope... Show

As for secondary sources I intended on referring to a variety of different sources, some of which
will look at other nations and how they developed during the cold war era. This will help me access
in what ways Costa Rica was unique. Continuing reviewing secondary sources I hope to review
how the role of neo imperialism affected the recourses to the civil war itself and if the United
States played any major role after the Figueres left office. I also believe that the secondary
sources I use will allow me to place the narrative of Costa Rica s civil war in historical context
compared to other nations around this era. I hope to briefly compare Costa Rica s civil war with
that of other nations.
When writing the paper itself I intend on breaking the paper up into different sections following
a chronological order. I intend on exploring what occurred that lead Costa Rica to move to a
Civil War. I then want to explore the Civil War itself and what Jose Figueres and the other rebels
were fighting for. This section will focus on ideologies of the Civil War. Then I wish to explore
why Costa Rica did not turn into dictatorship, in this section I which to explore in what ways Costa
Rica was different than so many other nations during the Cold War. Table of Contents:
Introduction: o In this section I intend discussing the historiography of the Costa Rican Civil War,
discuss the methods that I have utilized while

  • 2. Heroes Of The Enlightenment Analysis In the video Heroes of the Enlightenment by Humanist Society of Australia Inc, the author explains how during the seventeenth and eighteenth century European philosophy, science and politics were reoriented as part of a movement known as the Age of Enlightenment. The objective of the Enlightenment was to inform the public, aiming to persuade others about the main hero s ideas within that era. As well as, how they shaped the world that we live in today. The first hero of the enlightenment was Isaac Newton who was an innovator of modern science, and he founded the theory of gravity. He believed knowledge was not only written in the bible but also about observing what happens in our surroundings. Newton conceived gravity by watching an apple that was falling from a tree. Where other people would see just an apple falling, Newton had seen universal forces that were in action. Newton believed that God set up the universe in its eternal state. Newton s contributions gave people access to knowledge within the world. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 3. Designing A Design And Building Health Care Facilities For... In the past 15 years, modular constructions are widely used in all kinds of new buildings. Architects prefer the way of built and design because of the sustainable and economic performances. Also, it is an ideal way to improve the variability of a project significantly to adjust to the development of the urban and growth of the population. Texas has the best health care facilities and medical research institutes in the world and keep growing rapidly for decades. It should be a promising design practice to apply modular construction to design and build health care facilities for higher efficiency and sustainability. The built environment should be as importance as the building process (Guenther, 2009). As the trend of healthcare architecture research and design, sustainability is researched by scholars. What is more important, the theory should be tested and practiced in planning, designing and constructing. Varied strategies have been worked out by world wide designers and constructors. Modular construction and design is one of the thousands of strategies. A research done by Wu (2014) analyzed the ecological performance of modular constructions. By criteria of the LEED, charts and calculations were finished to prove sustainable performance of buildings. Also, the author summarized how modular construction works. First, designers should figure out specific rule to determine the modular decomposition. Then, each modular was designed individually by sustainable standard. At last, the modules would be combined together and test the function requirement (Wu, 2014). The author also mentioned that a green building technology modular system could be built up by combining with the theory and the characteristics of green building technology system. Obviously, it is a unique way of design using modular as thinking and design method, also can be called a theory, to meet the sustainable requirements. As a kind of construction method, modular construction itself has own features including sustainability. A book ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Students placed in the expressive writing group were told to write about their academic worry in detail for 20 minutes per session. Audio photic stimulation was administered through headphones for 35 minutes at a time, and programmed for worry reduction. The participants continued this for one month before being evaluated again for pathological academic stress. What were the results of this study? According to the data, all three interventions reduced worry to an extent, while those in the waitlist control group showed no significant improvement. When we seriously we really know anything at all, we innate lead into test of knowing, in the hope of being capable to discriminate the trustworthy beliefs from such as are untrustworthy. Knowledge is the principal intellectual attainment studies of epistemology. Virtually all theorists agree that true belief is a necessary condition for knowledge, and it was once thought that justification, when added to true belief, yield a necessary and sufficient condition for knowledge. All of us have an innate knowledge, concepts, forms, or universals that are an essential and inborn part that compose our mind. Without this rational knowledge would be impossible. Since substances must be capable of independent existence, it appears that they cannot be universals but must be particulars. However, this generated a dilemma since Aristotle also believed that only knowledge were defined and the object of scientific knowledge ( Introducing Grace Wester Thinker ). Thus if the substance is knowable, they cannot be particulars. But now it looks as if substance cannot exist at all since they cannot be either knowledge or particulars. According to Plato, knowledge can be gained by researching within, but Plato also addressed the common man s potential for achieving knowledge despite his deficient condition in comparison to the Platonic idea. In the famous allegory of the cave in the Republic, Plato offers a quite realistic view of the common man as being imprisoned in a world of becoming. This prisoner takes pictures on the wall for reality. In order to feed from this illustration, he has to turn around toward truth. The prisoners, however, are not able to turn around themselves without help from the outside. • 8. Public Opinion of the Affordable Care Act Nearly two years ago the enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was signed into place by President Obama. This signature placed by President Obama has never rested especially well with the American public. As to be expected, the views on health care laws are colored by partisanship. Overall, the opinions towards the health car law have wavered slightly since the passing in March of 2010, and support has yet to reach favorable in 2014. Role of Public Opinion Even with the public being well aware of the elements of the health care law, particularly individual mandates, there is still a lack of understanding of it. According to Pinto (2013), 41 percent of Americans felt they had a good understanding of what the new law entailed, but even after two years and implementation the number has increased just six points to 47 percent. The purpose behind public opinion was to make more affordable health care insurance for uninsured citizens originally (Pinto, 2013). Supporters of the Affordable Care Act believed that government run insurance companies could successfully lower rates by using greater leverage than the private industry (Pinto, 2013). Supporters of such public plans, believed that a small set of companies had control for local health insurance markets. Having such public opinion at such a huge national level meant insurance companies would cooperate. Many Democratic Politicians were publically in favor of public opinion for many reasons ... When trash ends up in a landfill it builds up in to a lager pile, starts to release toxic gases, and pollutes the ground it sits on. Most of the time the trash is burned to make more room for more trash. Landfills have a big effect on the environment. Landfills make gas composition. Is there a way to use LFG to our benefit? How many landfills are being used for their gases in the United States? Some companies are working on using the toxic gases to our benefit. Even animals are being affected by the trash in landfills. What can people do to help reduce the trash in landfills? When trash ends up in a landfill it does not decompose like compost it just sits there because there is lack of oxygenand low amounts of moisture, so it does not break down very rapidly. Because the trash just sits there, it starts to release gases like sulfur dioxide, methane, ammonia, hydrogen, and nitrogen oxide. All of those are very toxic for the environment. The gases in a landfill can move thought soil and collect inside building or homes that are nearby. These gases can cause health problems for people that breathe them in or are nearby. Once hydrogen sulfide and ammonia are in the air, it causes coughing, and irritation to people s eyes, nose, and even the throat. Harry Truman became president during the end of World War II in 1945. His final term ended in 1953. Dwight Eisenhower became president in the midst of the Cold war in 1953 and his last term ended on 1961. Truman was Democratic and Eisenhower was Republican. They each had many occasions when their policies had similar intentions, but they went about them differently. Each wanted to end the fighting and to limit the spread of communism. They each also wanted to help strengthen other parts of the world. They tried to achieve these issues by enacting foreign policies in military, political and economic situations. Truman and Eisenhower each wanted to help limit the increasing issue of communism. One approach they did was getting involved physically and militarily in the countries that were in need. The peace conference at Potsdam was a failure, because communist Russia still stood on their own and as their own separate nation. The Soviet Union had already succeeded in conquering Poland, and much of Europe splitting up Germany. After Hitler committed suicide, the main obstacle for the United States and many other countries was to avoid the looming threat of communism. Truman created the Truman Doctrine to possibly stop or postpone this issue. • 13. Christianity In The Early Middle Ages Essay Christianity in Europe during the Medieval Period encountered many hindrances such as corruption, sex, the Avignon Captivity, and the Great Schism. However, even though the church encountered many controversies which eventually undermined the foundation of the church, monastic revival reformed the church and ultimately restored the original beliefs. Corruption was present in many forms within the church during the medieval period. Many clergy members were landowners in late medieval Christianity and if they were not, the church would count on the nobles to share their profits from their peasants work. (Christian History, 2015) It was also familiar for members of clergy to buy their positions in order to obtain power and wealth. Priests were also known for visiting taverns, gambling, and having orgies with quarrels and blasphemy. Castration Anxiety And Texas Chainsaw Massacre Texas Chainsaw Massacre follows Sally and her friends when they take a trip to see her grandfather s old home, unfortunately when they wander outside the property they get attacked by the family of cannibals living next door. The sole survivor is Sally. Teeth follows teen virgin Dawn who after being raped realizes she has vagina dentata, she then harnesses it with the intent of avenging herself against those who have wronged her. In order to compare these two films, I will be analyzing how each interacts with the concept of castration anxiety. Castration anxiety as outlined by Freud is when a boy looks at his mother and realizes she does not have a penis, he views his mom as castrated and thus to him his mother is a warning of his castration. Carol Clover in Her Body Himself and Dumas in Horror and Psychoanalysis have elaborated on this concept in the genre of the horror explaining that castration anxiety is not only fear of penile harm but of one s power being taken away.... When Rabindranath Tagore states You can t cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water, he is suggesting that you can t achieve your life goals just by thinking and hoping about them. You actually have to work very hard and try to achieve that goal. The author is claiming that you actually needto work for your goals. For example the Everest climbers had a lot to risk and a lot to lose but they still climbed the mountain anyway because they knew that they wouldn t get to the top of that mountain just from hoping they would get carried up there. This quote relates to extreme sports because if you want to do an extreme sport really badly like going wingsuit flying you can t just look at the helicopter take off to drop the people. You actually have to want to jump out of that helicopter and take the risk yourself. As we see in the in the article, A Solemn Warning to Wingsuit Flyers , that a man named Geoffrey Robson died due to wingsuit flying. But that man new the risks of the sport and he took it anyway, because he didn t want to be the one that stares at the ocean hoping he crossed it. • 16. The Civil Argument Of Epistemology For decades, there has been an open deliberation over whether knowledge is intrinsic or if it springs itself from life experiences: the civil argument of epistemology. Epistemology is the investigation of knowledge and its techniques and legitimacy. Individuals from philosophers to scientists to psychologists have argued their perspectives, yet even today the contention is not yet settled. Personally, I believe that it bodes well for knowledge to originate from experiences. Three philosophers that are solid proponents for the belief that knowledge is derived from experiences are Gaston Bachelard, Immanuel Kant, and John Locke. One of the great epistemologists was Gaston Bachelard who was more commonly known as a philosopher of science. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kant concurred with empiricists that concepts without perceptions are empty (lonestar). He acknowledged that concepts and ideas cannot constitute knowledge alone and that innate ideas do not constitute knowledge at all. This brought about his conviction that there must be experience(s) in life for there to be knowledge. His theory was that there are two sorts of reasoning to acquire knowledge: posteriori reasoning and priori reasoning. The posteriori reasoning depends upon experience in the world that provides us with information. For example, if I said that Barack Obama was the president of the United States in 2010, I would only know that this is true through experience; I would not be able to determine this through an analysis of the concepts of president or Barack Obama. In contrast, a priori reasoning does not rely on experience to inform it, but to create the knowledge. Kant believed that with priori reasoning, the dynamic mind relates and understands experiences in terms of causes and effects where an event takes place and causes an experience to happen with the effect of knowledge being gained. Kant s crucial insight here is to argue that experience of a world as we have it is only conceivable if the psyche provides an efficient organizing of its representations; the mind makes deductions prior to experiences, but can only truly experience something in the event that it obtains knowledge from the ... The movement was mostly women whose husbands had uncontrolled drinking habits. Alcohol was also being blamed for health issues like anemia, cancer, high blood pressure and nerve damage. This lead to the ban of alcohol, which was called Prohibition. Anemia is the abnormally low count of red blood cells. This can trigger tiredness and cause someone to become lightheaded. Scientists believe drinking alcohol can increase the risk of cancer because the body converts alcohol into acetaldehyde (a potent carcinogen). • 23. Motives For Colonization In New England And Chesapeake... New England and the Chesapeake Region were both settled primarily by people of English origin, however, by 1700 they had both transformed into two unique societies. This is because their motives for colonization, their geographies, and their governments were all different. For example, the New England colonies typically had much harsher winters than the Chesapeake region and their people came to America to escape religious persecutionin their mother country. On the other hand, the people of the Chesapeake region experienced warmer summers and came there in search of gold. As previously stated, different motives for colonization were partially responsible for transforming the New Englandand Chesapeake regions into two unique societies. The New England colonies were formed for religious reasons whereas the colonies of the Chesapeake region were formed for economic purposes. To emphasize, the people that settled in the New England colonies had been previously punished by their king, Henry VIII, for being non anglican and in turn they left the church of England for the Netherlands (they became known as separatists due to how they separated themselves from the Church). The Netherlands didn t happen to work out for the separatists, so they went to the New World and settled in the New England region. Based on this, it could also be said that the separatists were seeking permanent settlement (as they wanted to escape religious persecution) whereas those in the Chesapeake region ... Barbara Harrison even labeled Dorothy Sayers s Lord Peter /Harriet Vane books, Strong Poison, Gaudy Night, and Busman s Honeymoon, as deliriously happy ending romances (66). We usually think of crypts as graves or coded messages, similar to the letter in Have His Carcasse. The notion of a crypt, however, contains a deeper psychological meaning. Crypts deal with the ideas of introjection and incorporation. These concepts identify the alternative ways in which the psyche handles trauma. When the psyche introjects a trauma, the trauma melds into the subconscious. If the psyche successfully assimilates the trauma, it unites with the rest of the psyche, much like a cube of ice (the trauma) melting in a glass of water (the psyche). Incorporation occurs when trauma embeds itself into the psyche, but remains separate and, therefore, separable. If we return to the idea of the psyche as a glass of water, incorporation resembles what happens when a Ping Pong ball (the trauma) drops into a glass of water. The ball remains a lump in the psyche. Jacques Derrida wrote about the crypt sealing the loss of the object, but also marking the refusal to mourn . . . I pretend to keep the dead alive, intact, safe (save) inside me, but it is only to refuse, in a necessarily equivocal way, to love the dead as a living part of me, dead save in me, through the process of introjection, as happens in so called normal mourning ( Foreword 17). • 43. The Event Of Spotlight Dance Academy 40 individuals were a part of Spotlight s outstanding production on February 6th, 2016. Each year, Spotlight Dance Academy has a Kick Off event for the purpose of performing all the routines for their competition season. This event is reserved for their elite troupe dancers to evince their hard work and takes place in Grand Haven High School s performing arts center. An event like this allows for the patrons to be entertained and the performers to express themselves while participating in a sport they enjoy. For weeks in advance, my friends and I were planning our car pools to support our friend. The day of the event, we all met and traveled in a few cars down to Grand Haven High School, including a small detour to Starbucks. Once we arrived, we had to wait in line for the doors to open. It was general admission so we got there early to ensure all 15 of us could sit together. While standing in line, I began to observe the people. Surprisingly, there was a plethora of people at this event, including parents, grandparents, and close friends. Clearly, the people who were in attendance were here to see a specific individual. Many of them carried flowers or signs to support their dancer. This created a celebratory and joyful atmosphere. Soon, the doors opened and we were allowed to choose our seats. We were some of the first to be seated so I continued to watch the various supporters file into the auditorium. While waiting for the show to start, I was taking in my surroundings. ...
