Living in Hawaii, one of the natural resources that is most valuable to society and the local economy
is access to these coastal and beach resources. At a state level, providing and improving access to
coastal resources has been a priority objective as defined by the Coastal Zone Management Act. In
attempts to valuate the benefits of access to these coastal resources, the majority of previous research
has focused on the value of beach recreation in coastal regions. These studies have found that visitors
decisions on what beach to go to are highly influenced by preferences, perceptions and the site s
characteristics (Halkos Matsiori 2012). According to this study by Halkos and Matsiori in Greece
people are more likely to be willing to pay for improvements in beach water quality, site facilities and
additional beach access points. Recent studies have taken this data one step further to valuate the
economic benefits of each of these identified improvements.
In this case, in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the SMA permitting process, values must be

Last week, while having my morning coffee, I overheard a conversation between a college lecturer
and a well known secretary in The Ministry of Finance. I was about to return upstairs in my office
when I observed the secretary pushed forward, looking the lecturer directly in her eyes emphatically
and aggressively said, You academics just don t get it...the government aint gat no money to take care
no university. I relaxed in my seat as the conversation between the two raged on. This same discussion

The video London Underground Dinner Party displays many different aspects of culture within the
London commuter community. The video shows a group of young people setting up a table and sitting
down to eat food together in the middle of the train. Interestingly, there are different microcultures
present on this one train cart made up of ten to thirty people at a time. Those involved, receive very
different and varying interactions with the others present on the train. These responses and interactions
represent the differences in cultures throughout this small train car. Specifically, in the forms of
knowledge, behavior and the cultural artifacts found throughout the video. This video is only a few
minutes in length, but is able to show so much if you look closely and pause the video from time to

My daughter was just 6 years old when she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Her symptoms
appeared as if she had a urinary tract infection. Normal blood glucose numbers should be around 80,
she was over 800, and in diabetic ketoacidosis. DKA can lead to death if untreated. We spent three
days in 2 different hospitals, had to learn all of the aspects of Juvenile Diabetes, from pricking her

I was brought here a few years ago, I lived in the streets at that time. A man took me to Daulatdia, the
biggest brothel in Bangladesh. He sold me to the owners, who kept me in a room and gave me drugs.
Then, a man suddenly came in and started taking off my clothes. I was so scared, I didn t understand
what was happening (Halima, 17). Halima was brought into the world of sex trafficking as a child and
now lives in a brothel in central Jessore, the last town before the border into India from Bangladesh.

Art and History in Washington D.C., but I found myself in Los Angeles due to the birth of my
Grandson. I attended the museum by myself. The Getty Museum was originally started in 1954 in J.
Paul Getty s home in Pacific Palisades. After Getty s death, the Getty Trust took over the museum.

can t see full frontal nudity. The woman represents fortune, and she is holding a cornucopia,
representing the bounty she may bring. She is sitting on a bubble which denotes that her favors are
fleeting. The man in the painting represents chance. He is looking longingly at fortune as he deposits
lottery tickets into a golden urn. During the time of the painting, civic lotteries were becoming popular
in Italy. It is believed that the painting s probable patron was Isabella d Este, Marchioness of Mantua.
Isabella s emblem included a bundle of lots, signifying her personal experience with varying fortunes.
One interesting fact about this painting is that it was found and purchased for a modest sum at a flea

False love, desire, and beauty frail, adieu! Dead is the root whence all these fancies grew, (Sir Walter
Raleigh). Raleigh portrays the love of poets as false love, which is similar to the way William
Shakespeare describes it in Sonnet 130, where he mocks the way other poets exaggerate their muses
beauty. Though one would assume Shakespeare wrote this sonnet to give to his mistress, he did not, as
he was smart enough to know she would never talk to him again if he did. He in fact wrote it to mock
Petrarchan sonnets which exaggerated beauty to the point where it was no longer real and it was
obvious the poet s love went no deeper than the skin of their mistress. In the sonnet Shakespeare first
appears harsh in criticizing his mistress beauty, but as the sonnet progresses, he subtly reveals that his
love for her is unconditional to ultimately challenge society s cliched beliefs of love.
In the first quatrain and the start of the second, Shakespeare is rather harsh in the way he describes his
mistress which helps later develop how true his love for her is. Shakespeare contrasts his mistress eyes
to the sun and describes them as dull, saying, my mistress eyes are nothing like the sun, (1). In the
Elizabethan era, a common beauty standard were bright eyes, which is why in many Petrarchan
sonnets writers describe their mistress eyes as bright as the sun. But that is an exaggeration.
Shakespeare, however portrays his mistress true features, though they do not meet society s standards.
This reveals that Shakespeare s love, unlike many petrarchan poets , goes beneath his mistress skin.
The use of juxtaposition creates the critical tone Likewise, Shakespeare s harsh tone is prevalent in the
first quatrain. The speaker intensifies the critical attitude toward his mistress when he ridicules the
color and texture of her hair. In the Elizabethan era, a common beauty standard was fair hair, which is
why many poets would compare their mistress hair to gold, but Shakespeare compares his mistress
hair to black wires. He does this with a harsh tone, not just saying her hair is not fair, but going to the
