The Differences Between Vascular And Nonvascular Plants
Land plants can be divided into three different groups. One of these groups are nonvascular plants
which include liverworts, hornworts, and mosses. The other two which are the focus of this paper are
vascular seedless plants and vascular seed plants. The difference between vascular and nonvascular
plants is that vascular plants have vascular tissue which enables them to grow up and be bigger than
nonvascular plants. The difference between seed and seedless vascular plants is the presence of a seed.
A seed is defined by the 10th Edition of Campbell Biology as an adaption of some terrestrial plants
consisting of an embryo packaged along with a store of food within a protective coat. This includes
anything from apple seeds to dandelion seeds. The absence or presence of a seed changes how a plant
reproduces and also leads to different advantages and disadvantages to the plant. Seedless vascular
plants include such plants as ferns, horsetails, club mosses, and whisk ferns. They live in wet
environments because they require water for reproduction. They reproduce through the use of spores.
Using ferns as an example the spores are found on the underside of the leaves. They are found in cases
called sori and each sorus holds many spores which are haploid. Spores are released and they form
gametophytes. Gametophytes make gametes which are also haploid and both the egg and the sperm of
the fern are created in the gametophyte, but in different parts. The egg is made in the

Toxic Traditions In The Lottery
Toxic Traditions
Tradition is not always the best thing, despite what most people might think. In the story The Lottery
we have an example of a toxic tradition. A toxic tradition would be something that has been passed on
from generation to generation, and the meaning of this tradition is then lost over the years. The Lottery
explores the topics of tradition, rebelling against the system, and mob mentality. The way the story is
written is meant to shock the reader when they realize what it means to win the lottery. The reader is
an outsider to the town and can see what s wrong about the whole tradition, despite the blindness of
the townspeople.
In The Lottery, we see a small town that follows tradition a little too closely. The tradition ... Show

However, when she is introduced, it s almost as if she s being set apart from the other citizens. She
arrives late, and is more lighthearted than the others, joking with Joe Summers. His response is almost
foreshadowing the ending, saying Thought we were going to have to get on without you, Tessie. (par.
9) The opposition to the lottery in the play is quite obvious compared to the silent resignation of Tessie
in the short story. In the play, the stage directions help to show how uncomfortable Tessie truly is with
the lottery. Tessie: (with forced pleasantness) Wouldn t have me leave my dishes in the sink, would
you Joe? (page 111) This line shows that Tessie does not want any part in the lottery. The play also
shows Bill Hutchison taking Tessie aside and confronting her about hiding Dave. This action shows
how seriously he, and probably many of the other people in town, take the lottery compared to Tessie s
passive rebellion. In the play there is also the character Belva Summers, who outright opposes the
lottery. She calls the lottery a heathen custom (page 108) Joe and Belva blame each other for their
brother leaving town. Belva blames Joe for it, because he organizes the lottery, and Joe blames Belva
for it, because she s the one who turned their brother around and made him oppose the lottery. They do
not seem to have a very good relationship because of this conflict. Belva seems to believe

New Media Literacy Essay
When the word was first used, literacy had a very traditional meaning: the ability to read and write (
Literacy, 2011). Being literate was the norm, it was required for all and it distinguished race and class.
However, as times change and culture emerges and grows, people acquire new knowledge, such as
technology, that can very well be identified as literacy, or media literacy. As technology leads the 21st
century, students are now expected to excel and master media literacy as well textual literacy (Jenkins,
Clinton, Purushotma, Robison Weigel, 2006). This is because the meaning of the word literacy
evolves into the set of abilities and skills where aural, visual, and digital literacy overlap (New Media
Consortium as cited in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because technology is advancing everyday, teachers, administrators and parents should ascribe great
value, money, time and/or effort to ensure that students are prepared to face the world with as much
media literacy skills as possible to be full participants in society (Jenkins et al., 2006). To do this,
educators and leaders must insure that there are countless resources to teach new media literacy,
whether in school, after school programs or even at home. Teachers, parents, and after school
caregivers all have a responsibility and a role to educate students and nurture their new media skills
(Jenkins et al., 2006). Literature Review Why should educators consider adding new media literacies
to curriculums? The answer is simple: new media literacies or skills emphasize social and
communication skills (Jenkins et al., 2006). This new culture requires that students or participants in
general be prepared and equipped as full participants having the social skills required to contribute and
they must be culturally competent (Jenkins et al., 2006). In addition, participating in online
communities, such as social network sites, intensifies or enhances certain properties not represented in
face to face communications, such as persistence, searchability, exact copyability and invisible
audiences (Boyd, 2008, pg. 2). Although these properties can change social dynamics, they give
students an outlet for their creativity and

Maslow Hierarchy of Needs Essay
Discuss Maslow s hierarchy of need and suggest ways in which it might be useful when working with
children and young people. Maslow (1943) devised a pyramid of needs which has five levels, and are
arranged in a hierarchy of how important they are for survival. These are, in order: physiological
needs, safety and security needs, belongingness, love and social, esteem needs and self actualization.
Self actualization is defined as the desire to become more and more what one is, to become everything
that one is capable of becoming (Maslow, 1943, p.375). The first four stages make up maintenance
needs, and the fifth stage is one s need for growth. There are many ways in which the Hierarchy of
Needs is useful when working with children and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nicholls suggested that Maslow s (1943) s hierarchy can help us make school an end in its self for
children. This is because those who adopt this view are much less likely to avoid work than those
children who see school as a means to an end. Maslow s (1943) hierarchy provides us with a recipe for
making a school an end in its self for students as it predicts that if we meet the higher needs of the
children, they will enjoy coming to school and will want to learn, increasing their level of success and
thus helping them to self actualize. Another way in which the hierarchy is useful to those working in
the school environment are the reasons behind increasing student participation: by giving students
more control, every component of the hierarchy can be met. By giving students a voice and acting
upon their wishes, schools can meet their basic physiological needs because students will say what
they need even if it as simple as school uniform changes or a wider choice of school lunches. Giving
students a voice also meets the belongingness and love component: Hastings (2003) cited in Holmes
(2006) found that children who are given a choice on how to decorate their school, are much less
likely to graffiti it because they have a sense ownership and control, thus feel like they are responsible
for it. Furthermore, this sense of ownership and responsibility gives the children some sort of status
within the school, boosting their self esteem, and when they

Similarities Between Jamestown And Plymouth Colonies
Coming to America, many different groups of people had a hard time migrating here and trying to
survive. Although many came well equipped for the hard journey, being new to the land made it
harder for them to build colonies and thrive. This is because they came across many unexpected
hardships that they were not prepared for mentally and physically. In this essay, I will talk about two
different groups that migrated to America and how they adjusted to the new land and the new way of
life. The colonies of Jamestown and Plymouth Plantation both had many similarities and a few
differences when they came to America in the journey to build more and more colonies. When
Jamestown had decided to set sail to make colonies in America, John Smith ... Show more content on

He soon took on an important role in the tribe the Pocahontas belonged to and he got to learn many
new things. Although he was liked and was able to sustain himself, he knew he had to go back to his
colony soon. When Smith made it back to his colony, he realized that they had gotten worse while he
was gone. They continued to lack food and the system they had as a government was falling apart. So
they all came to the conclusion that Smith should be elected president because he had learned from the
tribe how to set up and run an efficient government. Although Smith was very strict with the colonists,
by being so, the colony was able to get back on their feet and thrive. Later on as time passed, Smith
was injured and had to return to England. Of the 214 colonists that arrived in America, only 60
survived. The Pilgrims voyaged to America around 1602 and they were off to a bad start when it came
to colonize the new land. A while after the Pilgrims had landed in America, they decided to make
William Bradford the governor of their new government, which he continued on out for the rest of his
life. Throughout the time that the Pilgrims were in America, they suffered many deaths that were not
expected to occur. Many important people to the government had died due to lack of supplies. The
Pilgrims did not have the medicine or the food to provide each other when they came down with

Global Health Agendas And Domestic Government s Health...
This is where I examine the intersection of global health agendas and domestic government s health
policies. Recipient countries are encouraged to claim ownership for development strategies, and one
way is through Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSP). These papers would be published and
submitted to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or World Bank every few years detailing where a
country has come from and its strategy in the short or medium term to reach poverty reduction goals.
The PRSP goals for both countries are aligned with the MDGs. However, although Liberia and Sierra
Leone had similar health objectives in their PRSPs, the outcomes for both countries are different.
Internationally, Liberia was heralded as making the greatest progress in its health status as it had the
highest increase of life expectancy in the world (19.7 years) from 1990 to 2012 (WHO 2013).
According to Nkwanga (2015), international donors used Liberia s achievement as proof of success of
the aid programs. Sierra Leone on the other hand did not garner the same achievements with these
performance based measures. According to Health Poverty Action s report (Sharples 2015), Sierra
Leone ranks very low on the Human Development Index at 183 out of 187 countries. It had a high
infant mortality rate of 107 deaths per 1,000 live births and 1165 maternal deaths for every 100,000
live births, one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world (Sharples 2015 p. 4). However, the

The Crooked Line Essay
Ismat Chughtai s The Crooked Line reads like a classic Bildungsroman in many ways. It is the story of
a child born in an environment which is fairly hostile who grows up and is able to move away from
this hostile environment on a journey of self discovery. This basic structure is, however, where the
similarity ends. A Bildungsroman is a novel of development of the central protagonist from birth to a
position of stability within the social sphere. This normative form functions as a basis for Ismat
Chughtai s novel The Crooked Line but instead of being the pattern followed, it is the path not taken.
The normative Bildungsroman is that against which this novel rebels and tells the story of a
protagonist who follows a trajectory which is individualistic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

As it avows to depict reality and change is a fundamental feature of reality, it is imperative that the
realist novel changes constantly as well. This implies that the structural foundation of a
Bildungsroman would also have to be modified in order to make it contemporary and also realist. The
nature of this change, especially in the European context is obvious in terms of the transformation of
the novel from depicting stability into a genre which hinges on the inherent instability of a society. In
his essay on this topic, Franco Moretti in his introduction to The Way of the World argues that the new
novel is the transformative novel. In this, he uses the model of the novel of adultery in which the
growth of a character is located in the sphere of adultery and thereby is essentially an unstable
stability. This instability forms the foundation of the novel form in one more significant aspect; one
which is critical for Chughtai s Shaman as well. Youth is important for the central protagonist because
it is the site of potential which is hitherto untapped. This potential encapsulates the heroic potential of
the protagonist and manifests itself in the larger system of causality in the text. The trajectory which
the central protagonist will choose to follow is begun in a young age. The decisions of the character
work as milestones against which one may measure the success or the degree of closure provided by
the ending. However, as Moretti further elaborates, this Bildungsroman encapsulates within it another
paradox; the individual s growth cannot be parallel to societal growth as the social sphere exists in
order to suppress the individual. This implies that any authentic Bildungsroman hinges on the
discovery of a stable and viable alternative. That the protagonist will in some way find a balance
between the self and the world and therefore s/he will be able to develop personally as well as socially.

Potter V. US Court Case Study
I. The court acknowledges the Potters lawsuit for restitution of sums paid on the property and it was
not for expectancy damages. Clearly, the court stated, By selecting the remedy of rescission and
restitution, rather than expectation, or reliance damages, Potters chose what is usually the smallest
awardable recovery. (case, pg.4) Therefore, the court claims the remedy for this lawsuit was a fair
decision. Since the market value of the property decreases their total recovery and the court felt it was
an appropriate decision to deduct $10,800 from the awarding amount. The court rejects Oster
statement that the amount should have been base on the market value when the contract was breached
instead of when the performance occurs.

Rizescu, M. (2011). Orgainzational Culture Influences on the Organization s Functionality. Revista

communication, economics, politics, and especially business. The Internet and technological
improvements have allowed instantaneous communication almost anywhere, and even poor women in
India are using Smartphones to manage their banking portfolios. The idea of globalism continues to
break down cultural barriers. As this continues it will be essential for organizations to not only
understand, but embrace cultural differences and styles (Trebing and Estabrooks, 2005). Clearly, the
changing demands of global stakeholders require new ways of approaching divergent customer bases.
There are differences in style, skill, education and attitude in every organization now accentuated
when we think of the multi national organization. Correctly managed, this diversity can be a huge
bonus to the organization. Organizations are far more effective once they understand and use diversity
within their strategic and tactical planning process. Also, the new paradigm for global management
includes creating and maintaining a diverse work environment in which cultural diversity is encourage

An Analysis Of John Knowles A Separate Peace
In the words of Oscar Wilde, Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else s
opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation. (Du Profundis) That is certainly a true
statement for Gene Forrester, who almost blindly follows and emulates his friend Phineas; it in fact
begins to develop a theme of duality. But where did such a theme come from? Did it come from the
author s life? Was it from culture? Could it be from religion? How do events and literary devices in
the novel support such influences? John Knowles was influenced in many ways, biographically,
culturally, and religiously, to develop the the themes of envy, harmony, maturity, and war in his novel.

In Chapter Eight of the novel, Finny says, Have you swallowed all that war stuff? (114) This shows
the viewpoint of war being far off and distant, but later in the novel, we see in Chapter 12 this
viewpoint changes. Finny says then, I was going to keep on saying it [there is no war] until two
seconds after I got a letter from Ottawa or Chungking or some place saying, Yes, you can enlist with
us ...Then there would have been a war. (190) This shows that as war drew closer, Finny finally
admitted to himself that the war was indeed a reality, something teenagers from across America
admitted during World War II. As a representation of youthful innocence, Finny s viewpoints represent
a generation s views on the previous generation. These cultural views on the previous generation and
war would have affected Knowles, and therefore his writing.
The biographical, religious, and cultural concepts and events surrounding Knowles helped him
develop and drive home his themes such as jealousy, harmony, innocence, maturity, and war. These
themes present in A Separate Peace are universally constant. Since the beginning of time, people have
broken apart, come together, matured, and fought, and these trends will continue until humanity is
wiped out completely. This allows the readers to identify with the characters of Gene, Finny, Leper,
and Brinker on a personal level, making this book a classic to

that happened. Martine also struggles being near Sophie because she is a constant reminder of her

Teenage And Teenage Driving
Indiana Teenage Driving Teenage driving in the United States has been a large controversial topic over
the years. In the state of Indiana, anyone of fifteen and a half to sixteen may obtain a driving permit.
Indiana recommends early drivers to enroll in the driver education programs to learn the skills of
driving. Young people have created a series of issues that give good reasons to increase the driver s
license age. Underage drunk driving is a huge discussion in larger cities and the youth have more
access to liquor. According to Robert Little and Kenneth Clontz, Fatal vehicular accidents resulting

Driving instructors, throughout the country, should start to emphasis the importance of drinking and
how hazardous it is. Educating people about the consequences to drunk driving should be discussed so
that it may change the minds of younger people throughout the country. Even with educating young
drivers about drinking and driving, there will be some teens that still drink and drive. The majority of
teenagers in car crashes are caused because of teenage drunk driving. Young drivers do not realize that
not only drinking and driving is dangerous for them, but also other driver s lives would be in danger
too. In Young, Drunk, Dangerous, and Driving: Underage Drinking and Driving Research Findings
points out that 50% have consumed alcohol while in the act of driving and almost seven of every ten
youth have driven a car after having consumed a couple of drinks (39). With this in mind Indiana,

state of Indiana, the protocols for police officers have the authority to pull over any suspicious drunk
drivers. Positive test results in drunk driving could lead to serious disciplinary actions, especially for
young drivers. You are considered to be over the limit in Indiana if you have a BAC of at least 0.08%,

certain responsibilities assumed for both the government and people. Preparedness behaviors take

taken by families, households, and communities to get ready for a disaster. Preparedness activities
may include devising disaster plans, gathering emergency supplies, training response teams, and

Film Reflection On The Film Shottas
Introduction
For this assignment, I decided to reflect on the film Shottas . The film begins in the streets of
Kingston, Jamaica home of Biggs and Wayne, the two main characters. They lived within a very
dangerous and violent town, which drove them into their own violent lifestyle. As young men, how the
movie starts off, they rob the local drug dealers of a gun for a premeditated robbery. The money
allowed for them to purchase visas to come to Miami, Florida. While in the United States, as adults,
the two continue their criminal activities leading them to be deported back to their home in Jamaica.
Mad Max and Wayne, who was deported years before Biggs made his return, had already formed a
striving extortion business. Wayne made it mandatory for all businesses in the Kingston area to pay
money to operate there, or they will be killed. The Jamaica Police did not like Wayne or his Shoota
crew, after the gruesome public murder the police then killed Wayne s brother. Later, the Congressmen
offered to renew Wayne, Biggs, and Mad Max s visa to get them out of the country. Happily back in
Miami, the three men aim to becoming the top drug dealers of the city, by extorting the new top drug
dealer, Teddy. As they raise to power in Miami, they commit several forms of extortion, murder, and
assaults. The film ends in extreme violence leading to the murders of Wayne and Mad Max, in a
shootout with Teddy s crew. Biggs then murders Teddy and his girlfriend, while getting away with all
his money and escapes.
Scanning
This movie has a lot to do with organized crime and how organizations typically build their way up to
it. In the beginning, Biggs and Wayne were just acting as partners in low leveled criminal activities,
however, with age came more discipline and a striving criminal organization named Shottas . The film
focuses on different organized crimes, yet for this paper the focus will be on extortion. Extortion is,
the act of obtaining property of another through threats of future harm. It seems to be a major issue
within the movie, because it is the way the Shottas came to power in the underworld.
Analysis
When it comes to extortion, in my opinion, there are different levels when it comes to classifying

Short Story The Lamp At Noon And The Painted Door
In the short stories The Lamp At Noon and The Painted Door by Sinclair Ross, the use of setting is a
tool to help emphasize the relationships of both marriages in each story as well as helping support the
motifs of loneliness and isolation. However, this use of setting is much more effective in The Lamp At
Noon as opposed to The Painted Door.
In The Painted Door, the setting is a small farm which supports a man named John and his wife, Ann.
The farm on which they live is rather desolate as they are not in a very close proximity to any of their
neighbours and are often secluded to their house during the winter seasons with their only interactions
being a game of cards with their neighbour, Steven. This scenario in which these two live can be
reflected by the environment around them. The story takes place in the midst of a tremendous blizzard,
the blizzard is so powerful that Ann can t walk outside without being pushed over by the wind. This
snow covered abyss exemplifies how alone the couple is. The darkness and literal isolation from the
rest of the world are clear indicators of this. The dark and cold also represents how Ann views her
relationship with John. She yearns for his affection and his attention, but despite these needs all John
ever does is work. He works himself to the bone so that Ann can be comfortable with her place in life
failing to realize that all she s ever wanted was affection and company, which she eventually finds in
Steven. The Lamp At Noon also makes good use of its setting to help develop the themes as well as
the marriage of this story s couple, Paul and Ellen. The setting of this story is a dried up farm where
no crops grow. The whole farm is shrouded in a cloud of dust and wind. The dust fills the air of Paul
and Ellen s house completely smothering everything with dust. Ellen, coming from a richer household,
urges Paul to leave believing that they have no future here and that the crops will never grow again.
Ellen left a life of comfort and luxury for a dusty, decrepit farm, resulting in feelings of isolation,
anger and hopelessness. However, Paul is determined to stay and live off the land, he has faith that the
crops will grow and their farm will be prosperous once more. This is

Essay About Moving School
The most significant challenge that I ve had to face was moving schools and even states. It was some
of the biggest and quickest changes I ve ever had to deal with and it wasn t easy especially at ages 8
through 11. I learned to adapt to things faster so I wouldn t get the feeling of being left behind. This
experience definitely changed me as a person making me stronger and independent. Moving to new
schools is never simple; moving meant leaving everything behind and having to start over. From
preschool to third grade I had gone to the same elementary, had lots of friends and knew most of the
teachers. The school itself had been around for about 60 years and they decided it was getting old so
they wanted to build a new school in the back. The only problem was not all the students would be
transferring over to the new school and I was one of those students. ... Show more content on

We got to visit California almost every summer to see family and go to the fun amusement parks like
Disneyland and Universal Studios. I was excited because that meant I d get to leave the new school
behind , along with the mean people and start over. The schools in California were definitely a lot
more different than the schools in Idaho, one difference being that the schools in California were more
outdoors with bungalows. I also realized there was much more hispanics in California than there was
in Idaho. I was beginning my last year of elementary in a new place and then going on to middle
school which was exciting. What I learned in this new school with these new people in a completely
different state was that being myself was probably the most important thing in life. I didn t enjoy the
feeling of having to put other people s wants and needs over my own, that wasn t helping me at all. I
made a lot of friends in 5th grade because they liked me for who I was, not for who I pretended to

The Dispossessed
In describing Anarres as an ambiguous utopia, Ursula Le Guin makes a statement on the state of the
utopia of the mid to late twentieth century. Readers were becoming bored with the perfection and
idealism presented in most stories of utopian societies, and they craved conflict and excitement. As
The Dispossessed begins, the ambiguously utopian aspects of Anarres are obvious; a mysterious and
traitorous Passenger (later revealed to be Shevak) is being transported via ship by a defense crew that
seems fairly blasé about the Passenger s condition as long as it doesn t keep them from their course.
Even this soon into the story, the reader is bombarded with information that makes the world seem
anything but ideal. Le Guin places two similar

For example, there has been a lot of research looking at how violence against women puts them at risk
of contracting HIV. Now we are looking at it from another angle: how does being HIV positive put
women at risk of violence?
Kwezilomso says the Zuma case raised numerous issues about HIV, sexuality and culture and helped
members of the campaign to see that not only should they continue but that they needed to broaden
their approach. Just because the other eight women don t follow the justice system route, it doesn t
mean they are not speaking out in other ways.
In a society that has normalized the abnormal and which appears complacent about the extraordinarily
high level of violence against women and children, the members of the campaign are determined to

Bechtel s Greed
In April of 2000 thousands of Bolivians protested that their water supply had been privatized to a U.S.
based corporation, Bechtel, as part of a loan program with the World Bank and the International
Monetary Fund (IMF). Bechtel has vast political influence as demonstrated by how they made over $1
billion during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, second only to Halliburton, largely from no bid
contracts. Predictably, this company s greed showed no limits, even in one of the poorest countries in
the world. Water prices skyrocketed immediately to almost double the previous prices and Bolivians
were actually expected to pay Bechtel for collecting their own rainwater. Even though the new policy
was clearly disastrous, the former Bolivian President ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

every year billions of dollars are spent on U.S. military foreign aid throughout Latin America, another
unofficial stimulus package for the military industrial complex. We re essentially buying our military
and economic allies. From 2005 to 2009, the government spent more than $3.1 billion on
counternarcotics contracts in Latin America. The majority of that funding, $1.8 billion, went to only
five contractors: DynCorp, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, ITT, and ARINC. The top recipient from that
group, DynCorp, received $1.1 billion. That should be no surprise as DynCorp is exceedingly
connected politically with former executives who include cabinet members from the Reagan
administration, George Shultz and Caspar Weinberger. Also, Bill Clinton s former drug czar, Gen.
Barry McCaffrey, is one of DynCorp s board members. Mexico is one of the largest recipients of U.S.
military aid for counternarcotics operations. Since 2008, the U.S. has provided training, equipment,

Mexican government with $2.3 billion in military aid since 2008. This policy defies common sense as
there is a long history of drug corruption in Mexico. The most powerful cartels have been protected,
while their rivals have been targeted by the Mexican law enforcement. Inserting the Mexican military

Similarities Between Exit East And A Golden Age
Tahmima Anam s A Golden Age , published first in 2007 is set in the city of Dhaka during
Bangladesh s war of liberation in 1971 . Bangladesh then formed the eastern wing of the
Pakistan and after many years of negligent and contemptuous governance, became the battlefield for
the Pakistani Army and India backed Bangladeshi armed fighters.
This work has themes which elicit comparisons with Exit West by Mohsin Hamid . Both of the books
feature a city torn with civil war and main characters who are subject to a sudden upheaval in their
lives once the infighting starts. Unlike Hamid s magical realism inspired dystopian utopia which
envisions a world without border, Anam s work is a narrative firmly set in the bloody history pages of

Eventually as her children threw themselves into the struggle, she too unable to deny them, ends up
contributing to the struggle.
The most striking difference between A Golden Age and Exit West is the fact that the characters are
fighting for their idea of a home. The children think of home when Bangladesh is independent, and
Rehana when her family is safe and together in their house. Despite temporarily leaving Dhaka for
some time, they makes sure to return to their original abode, indicating that their struggle was for their
land itself.
The city of Dhaka itself show many characteristics that can be seen in almost all large cities.
There is some sort of degree of variety in population. Here, Muslims and Hindus coexist in a city
bustling with activity. Rehana s friend circle itself consists of members of both the groups as they
carry on with their mundane gossip and gatherings. The Dhaka college, like educational institutions in
times of unrest, is a breeding ground of revolutionary sentiments, highlighting the importance of
major urban colleges in terms of such mass movements. It is there where Sohail and Maya get a

Alternative Outcome Analysis Of The Battle Of Fredericksburg
Alternative Outcome Analysis of the Battle of Fredericksburg
SSG Ian J. Watterson
U.S. Army
Abstract
This paper will examine the Battle of Fredericksburg through the research of analytical papers,
historical articles and technical reports by conducting the four steps of battle analysis. It will analyze
the effects of the use and dismissal of intelligence assets and disciplines when applied to the planning
of a territorial battle campaign. Using terrain analysis it will discuss how the choice of advantageous
terrain can sway the outcome of a battle. It will also discuss how timing and momentum can be critical
to our overall military planning. Finally, it will present an alternative outcome to the battle by
establishing the utilization of intelligence assets available to both commanding generals and how
altering critical decision points would have presented a significantly different result.
Alternative Outcome Analysis of the Battle of Fredericksburg
The Battle of Fredericksburg
The Battle of Fredericksburg is remembered as the Confederate Army s most one sided victory in its
campaign against the Union Forces of the North. It was also the first battle to occur shortly after
President Abraham Lincoln had delivered his Emancipation Proclamation and the President was hard
pressed for a victory to use to bolster public support for it. General George McClellan fresh of his
victory against of General Robert E. Lee s forces at Antietam was being pressured by the President to

The Chocolate War Character Analysis
The most memorable character in the book The chocolate War was Jerry Renault in my view because
he was a very influential character and stood up for what he believed in. The first thing that stood out
to me was that Jerry s mother had just passed away which was a very hard thing to over come. He is
also becoming a stronger person because he has decided to stand against the universe, because he is
tired of getting pushed around and told what to do. Also with the vigils breathing down his neck to
complete the assignment of not selling for the chocolate sale was a big deal and put stress on him. I
also feel that Jerry has become a stronger person because he has to watch after his father. Jerry has

The Goal of the United States Criminal Justice System
Within the United States Criminal Justice System, it is not only goal to simply punish those who break
the law, but to also reduce the level of criminal activity. In order to fulfill this important aspect of the
Criminal Justice System, offenders must be rehabilitated and motivated to refrain from engaging in
further criminal activity so that they do not return to prison. Since the early 1990 s, our country s
crime rate has been declining. Studies such as the Pew Safety Performance Project point out that this
is an important goal for correctional systems to keep in mind, but it is not the only one. Pew Safety

The Power Of Female Power In Beyonc s Song Pretty Hurts
Beyoncé is a singer known for her fantastic voice, rejuvenating dance moves, and most importantly
her empowering throughout her songs. These skills are no different in her song Pretty Hurts. Released
on June 10, 2014, from her self titled album Beyoncé, the song written by Sia, Joshua Ammo
Coleman, and Beyoncé herself resonates its empowering message with people of all different genders,
body types, and races. This song, in particular, is targeted towards women, especially young women
who are still developing. Beyoncé gained popularity when she started off in an all female group
named Destiny s Child back in 1997, and once she broke off from the group, she only continued to
grow as an artist and person. In all six of Beyoncé s solo studio albums, there are songs with
galvanizing messages of female power and all of them reached number 1 on the charts. In Beyoncé s
song Pretty Hurts, she uses social issues, rhetorical appeals such as pathos, literary devices,
metaphors, and vivid imagery to further the theme of female empowerment.
Pretty Hurts is the opening track on her self titled album, and I believe that this makes a statement
towards the contemporary feminists issues of today. There are many different social problems that the
song tackles. Beyoncé is known as a feminist, and on each of her albums some songs are about female
empowerment such as, Single Ladies, Irreplaceable, and Run the World (Girls). The theme of Pretty
Hurts can be interpreted to be

Meaning Of Valley Forge By Tohmas Paine
The line that Tohmas Paine wrote These are the times that try men s souls has much meaning to the

book called the Crisis which was written to boost morale, and this line in particular showed that they
know that times are tough and that they really need to get out of this, but we couldn t do it without the
people. In Valley Forge, the men were losing morale because they had little to no food and were
basicly trapped. The line was meant to help show the men that they were needed, but this line really
related to the whole war though, because things were not looking too bright for the colonists. They

Rfid Technology For The Consumer And The Producer Alike
Technology is quickly evolving and changing our everyday tasks. The next big thing is RFID
technology. RFID, also known as Radio Frequency Identification Device, is making it easier for the
consumer to pay without swiping their card or without signing. Many already know RFID as pay pass
where you simply wave your credit card over an RFID transmitter to pay for purchases. There are
many benefits and cons to this new technology for the consumer and the producer alike.
RFID has been around longer than the average American realizes. In World War II we start to see this
new technology emerge in the form of a radar. A handful of nations used the radar to detect

Similar technology, such as the IFF transponder, was routinely used by the allies and Germany in
World War II to identify aircraft as friend or foe (Stockman, 1948). In the 1950 s 1960 s scientists did
research on how Radio Frequency could be used to distinguish objects remotely. Companies soon
began to create anti theft systems that used Radio Frequency to determine if something had been paid
for or not. This technology is still used today in stores all around the world. As you enter or leave a
store you walk through two gay columns on either side of the door, these are used as the transmitter
and in every item in the store there is a chip. If the chip is not deactivated as the consumer checks out,
then it will send a signal to the transmitter in the gray columns and the transmitter will in turn sound
an alarm. This alerts the store that something has either been stolen or it was not fully scanned

On January 23, 1973 Mario W. Cardullo received the first U.S. patent for an active RFID tag

  • 2. The Differences Between Vascular And Nonvascular Plants Land plants can be divided into three different groups. One of these groups are nonvascular plants which include liverworts, hornworts, and mosses. The other two which are the focus of this paper are vascular seedless plants and vascular seed plants. The difference between vascular and nonvascular plants is that vascular plants have vascular tissue which enables them to grow up and be bigger than nonvascular plants. The difference between seed and seedless vascular plants is the presence of a seed. A seed is defined by the 10th Edition of Campbell Biology as an adaption of some terrestrial plants consisting of an embryo packaged along with a store of food within a protective coat. This includes anything from apple seeds to dandelion seeds. The absence or presence of a seed changes how a plant reproduces and also leads to different advantages and disadvantages to the plant. Seedless vascular plants include such plants as ferns, horsetails, club mosses, and whisk ferns. They live in wet environments because they require water for reproduction. They reproduce through the use of spores. Using ferns as an example the spores are found on the underside of the leaves. They are found in cases called sori and each sorus holds many spores which are haploid. Spores are released and they form gametophytes. Gametophytes make gametes which are also haploid and both the egg and the sperm of the fern are created in the gametophyte, but in different parts. The egg is made in the ... • 3. Toxic Traditions In The Lottery Toxic Traditions Tradition is not always the best thing, despite what most people might think. In the story The Lottery we have an example of a toxic tradition. A toxic tradition would be something that has been passed on from generation to generation, and the meaning of this tradition is then lost over the years. The Lottery explores the topics of tradition, rebelling against the system, and mob mentality. The way the story is written is meant to shock the reader when they realize what it means to win the lottery. The reader is an outsider to the town and can see what s wrong about the whole tradition, despite the blindness of the townspeople. In The Lottery, we see a small town that follows tradition a little too closely. The tradition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, when she is introduced, it s almost as if she s being set apart from the other citizens. She arrives late, and is more lighthearted than the others, joking with Joe Summers. His response is almost foreshadowing the ending, saying Thought we were going to have to get on without you, Tessie. (par. 9) The opposition to the lottery in the play is quite obvious compared to the silent resignation of Tessie in the short story. In the play, the stage directions help to show how uncomfortable Tessie truly is with the lottery. Tessie: (with forced pleasantness) Wouldn t have me leave my dishes in the sink, would you Joe? (page 111) This line shows that Tessie does not want any part in the lottery. The play also shows Bill Hutchison taking Tessie aside and confronting her about hiding Dave. This action shows how seriously he, and probably many of the other people in town, take the lottery compared to Tessie s passive rebellion. In the play there is also the character Belva Summers, who outright opposes the lottery. She calls the lottery a heathen custom (page 108) Joe and Belva blame each other for their brother leaving town. Belva blames Joe for it, because he organizes the lottery, and Joe blames Belva for it, because she s the one who turned their brother around and made him oppose the lottery. They do not seem to have a very good relationship because of this conflict. Belva seems to believe ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Chad Johnson shows up with a bag full of protein powder and about $7,000 worth of clothes. Chad wanted to win over JoJo, but it obviously didn t work for him. • 5. New Media Literacy Essay When the word was first used, literacy had a very traditional meaning: the ability to read and write ( Literacy, 2011). Being literate was the norm, it was required for all and it distinguished race and class. However, as times change and culture emerges and grows, people acquire new knowledge, such as technology, that can very well be identified as literacy, or media literacy. As technology leads the 21st century, students are now expected to excel and master media literacy as well textual literacy (Jenkins, Clinton, Purushotma, Robison Weigel, 2006). This is because the meaning of the word literacy evolves into the set of abilities and skills where aural, visual, and digital literacy overlap (New Media Consortium as cited in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because technology is advancing everyday, teachers, administrators and parents should ascribe great value, money, time and/or effort to ensure that students are prepared to face the world with as much media literacy skills as possible to be full participants in society (Jenkins et al., 2006). To do this, educators and leaders must insure that there are countless resources to teach new media literacy, whether in school, after school programs or even at home. Teachers, parents, and after school caregivers all have a responsibility and a role to educate students and nurture their new media skills (Jenkins et al., 2006). Literature Review Why should educators consider adding new media literacies to curriculums? The answer is simple: new media literacies or skills emphasize social and communication skills (Jenkins et al., 2006). This new culture requires that students or participants in general be prepared and equipped as full participants having the social skills required to contribute and they must be culturally competent (Jenkins et al., 2006). In addition, participating in online communities, such as social network sites, intensifies or enhances certain properties not represented in face to face communications, such as persistence, searchability, exact copyability and invisible audiences (Boyd, 2008, pg. 2). Although these properties can change social dynamics, they give students an outlet for their creativity and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Maslow Hierarchy of Needs Essay Discuss Maslow s hierarchy of need and suggest ways in which it might be useful when working with children and young people. Maslow (1943) devised a pyramid of needs which has five levels, and are arranged in a hierarchy of how important they are for survival. These are, in order: physiological needs, safety and security needs, belongingness, love and social, esteem needs and self actualization. Self actualization is defined as the desire to become more and more what one is, to become everything that one is capable of becoming (Maslow, 1943, p.375). The first four stages make up maintenance needs, and the fifth stage is one s need for growth. There are many ways in which the Hierarchy of Needs is useful when working with children and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nicholls suggested that Maslow s (1943) s hierarchy can help us make school an end in its self for children. This is because those who adopt this view are much less likely to avoid work than those children who see school as a means to an end. Maslow s (1943) hierarchy provides us with a recipe for making a school an end in its self for students as it predicts that if we meet the higher needs of the children, they will enjoy coming to school and will want to learn, increasing their level of success and thus helping them to self actualize. Another way in which the hierarchy is useful to those working in the school environment are the reasons behind increasing student participation: by giving students more control, every component of the hierarchy can be met. By giving students a voice and acting upon their wishes, schools can meet their basic physiological needs because students will say what they need even if it as simple as school uniform changes or a wider choice of school lunches. Giving students a voice also meets the belongingness and love component: Hastings (2003) cited in Holmes (2006) found that children who are given a choice on how to decorate their school, are much less likely to graffiti it because they have a sense ownership and control, thus feel like they are responsible for it. Furthermore, this sense of ownership and responsibility gives the children some sort of status within the school, boosting their self esteem, and when they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Similarities Between Jamestown And Plymouth Colonies Coming to America, many different groups of people had a hard time migrating here and trying to survive. Although many came well equipped for the hard journey, being new to the land made it harder for them to build colonies and thrive. This is because they came across many unexpected hardships that they were not prepared for mentally and physically. In this essay, I will talk about two different groups that migrated to America and how they adjusted to the new land and the new way of life. The colonies of Jamestown and Plymouth Plantation both had many similarities and a few differences when they came to America in the journey to build more and more colonies. When Jamestown had decided to set sail to make colonies in America, John Smith ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He soon took on an important role in the tribe the Pocahontas belonged to and he got to learn many new things. Although he was liked and was able to sustain himself, he knew he had to go back to his colony soon. When Smith made it back to his colony, he realized that they had gotten worse while he was gone. They continued to lack food and the system they had as a government was falling apart. So they all came to the conclusion that Smith should be elected president because he had learned from the tribe how to set up and run an efficient government. Although Smith was very strict with the colonists, by being so, the colony was able to get back on their feet and thrive. Later on as time passed, Smith was injured and had to return to England. Of the 214 colonists that arrived in America, only 60 survived. The Pilgrims voyaged to America around 1602 and they were off to a bad start when it came to colonize the new land. A while after the Pilgrims had landed in America, they decided to make William Bradford the governor of their new government, which he continued on out for the rest of his life. • 8. Global Health Agendas And Domestic Government s Health... This is where I examine the intersection of global health agendas and domestic government s health policies. Recipient countries are encouraged to claim ownership for development strategies, and one way is through Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSP). These papers would be published and submitted to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or World Bank every few years detailing where a country has come from and its strategy in the short or medium term to reach poverty reduction goals. The PRSP goals for both countries are aligned with the MDGs. However, although Liberia and Sierra Leone had similar health objectives in their PRSPs, the outcomes for both countries are different. Internationally, Liberia was heralded as making the greatest progress in its health status as it had the highest increase of life expectancy in the world (19.7 years) from 1990 to 2012 (WHO 2013). According to Nkwanga (2015), international donors used Liberia s achievement as proof of success of the aid programs. Sierra Leone on the other hand did not garner the same achievements with these performance based measures. According to Health Poverty Action s report (Sharples 2015), Sierra Leone ranks very low on the Human Development Index at 183 out of 187 countries. It had a high infant mortality rate of 107 deaths per 1,000 live births and 1165 maternal deaths for every 100,000 live births, one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world (Sharples 2015 p. 4). • 9. The Crooked Line Essay Ismat Chughtai s The Crooked Line reads like a classic Bildungsroman in many ways. It is the story of a child born in an environment which is fairly hostile who grows up and is able to move away from this hostile environment on a journey of self discovery. This basic structure is, however, where the similarity ends. A Bildungsroman is a novel of development of the central protagonist from birth to a position of stability within the social sphere. This normative form functions as a basis for Ismat Chughtai s novel The Crooked Line but instead of being the pattern followed, it is the path not taken. The normative Bildungsroman is that against which this novel rebels and tells the story of a protagonist who follows a trajectory which is individualistic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As it avows to depict reality and change is a fundamental feature of reality, it is imperative that the realist novel changes constantly as well. This implies that the structural foundation of a Bildungsroman would also have to be modified in order to make it contemporary and also realist. The nature of this change, especially in the European context is obvious in terms of the transformation of the novel from depicting stability into a genre which hinges on the inherent instability of a society. In his essay on this topic, Franco Moretti in his introduction to The Way of the World argues that the new novel is the transformative novel. In this, he uses the model of the novel of adultery in which the growth of a character is located in the sphere of adultery and thereby is essentially an unstable stability. This instability forms the foundation of the novel form in one more significant aspect; one which is critical for Chughtai s Shaman as well. Youth is important for the central protagonist because it is the site of potential which is hitherto untapped. This potential encapsulates the heroic potential of the protagonist and manifests itself in the larger system of causality in the text. The trajectory which the central protagonist will choose to follow is begun in a young age. The decisions of the character work as milestones against which one may measure the success or the degree of closure provided by the ending. However, as Moretti further elaborates, this Bildungsroman encapsulates within it another paradox; the individual s growth cannot be parallel to societal growth as the social sphere exists in order to suppress the individual. This implies that any authentic Bildungsroman hinges on the discovery of a stable and viable alternative. That the protagonist will in some way find a balance between the self and the world and therefore s/he will be able to develop personally as well as socially. This developmental ... Clearly, the court stated, By selecting the remedy of rescission and restitution, rather than expectation, or reliance damages, Potters chose what is usually the smallest awardable recovery. (case, pg.4) Therefore, the court claims the remedy for this lawsuit was a fair decision. Since the market value of the property decreases their total recovery and the court felt it was an appropriate decision to deduct $10,800 from the awarding amount. The court rejects Oster statement that the amount should have been base on the market value when the contract was breached instead of when the performance occurs. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Film Reflection On The Film Shottas Introduction For this assignment, I decided to reflect on the film Shottas . The film begins in the streets of Kingston, Jamaica home of Biggs and Wayne, the two main characters. They lived within a very dangerous and violent town, which drove them into their own violent lifestyle. As young men, how the movie starts off, they rob the local drug dealers of a gun for a premeditated robbery. The money allowed for them to purchase visas to come to Miami, Florida. While in the United States, as adults, the two continue their criminal activities leading them to be deported back to their home in Jamaica. Mad Max and Wayne, who was deported years before Biggs made his return, had already formed a striving extortion business. Wayne made it mandatory for all businesses in the Kingston area to pay money to operate there, or they will be killed. The Jamaica Police did not like Wayne or his Shoota crew, after the gruesome public murder the police then killed Wayne s brother. Later, the Congressmen offered to renew Wayne, Biggs, and Mad Max s visa to get them out of the country. Happily back in Miami, the three men aim to becoming the top drug dealers of the city, by extorting the new top drug dealer, Teddy. As they raise to power in Miami, they commit several forms of extortion, murder, and assaults. The film ends in extreme violence leading to the murders of Wayne and Mad Max, in a shootout with Teddy s crew. Biggs then murders Teddy and his girlfriend, while getting away with all his money and escapes. Scanning This movie has a lot to do with organized crime and how organizations typically build their way up to it. In the beginning, Biggs and Wayne were just acting as partners in low leveled criminal activities, however, with age came more discipline and a striving criminal organization named Shottas . The film focuses on different organized crimes, yet for this paper the focus will be on extortion. Extortion is, the act of obtaining property of another through threats of future harm. • 20. Short Story The Lamp At Noon And The Painted Door In the short stories The Lamp At Noon and The Painted Door by Sinclair Ross, the use of setting is a tool to help emphasize the relationships of both marriages in each story as well as helping support the motifs of loneliness and isolation. However, this use of setting is much more effective in The Lamp At Noon as opposed to The Painted Door. In The Painted Door, the setting is a small farm which supports a man named John and his wife, Ann. The farm on which they live is rather desolate as they are not in a very close proximity to any of their neighbours and are often secluded to their house during the winter seasons with their only interactions being a game of cards with their neighbour, Steven. This scenario in which these two live can be reflected by the environment around them. The story takes place in the midst of a tremendous blizzard, the blizzard is so powerful that Ann can t walk outside without being pushed over by the wind. This snow covered abyss exemplifies how alone the couple is. The darkness and literal isolation from the rest of the world are clear indicators of this. The dark and cold also represents how Ann views her relationship with John. She yearns for his affection and his attention, but despite these needs all John ever does is work. He works himself to the bone so that Ann can be comfortable with her place in life failing to realize that all she s ever wanted was affection and company, which she eventually finds in Steven. The Lamp At Noon also makes good use of its setting to help develop the themes as well as the marriage of this story s couple, Paul and Ellen. The setting of this story is a dried up farm where no crops grow. The whole farm is shrouded in a cloud of dust and wind. The dust fills the air of Paul and Ellen s house completely smothering everything with dust. Ellen, coming from a richer household, urges Paul to leave believing that they have no future here and that the crops will never grow again. Water prices skyrocketed immediately to almost double the previous prices and Bolivians were actually expected to pay Bechtel for collecting their own rainwater. Even though the new policy was clearly disastrous, the former Bolivian President ... In fact, every year billions of dollars are spent on U.S. military foreign aid throughout Latin America, another unofficial stimulus package for the military industrial complex. We re essentially buying our military and economic allies. From 2005 to 2009, the government spent more than $3.1 billion on counternarcotics contracts in Latin America. The majority of that funding, $1.8 billion, went to only five contractors: DynCorp, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, ITT, and ARINC. The top recipient from that group, DynCorp, received $1.1 billion. That should be no surprise as DynCorp is exceedingly connected politically with former executives who include cabinet members from the Reagan administration, George Shultz and Caspar Weinberger. Also, Bill Clinton s former drug czar, Gen. Barry McCaffrey, is one of DynCorp s board members. Mexico is one of the largest recipients of U.S. military aid for counternarcotics operations. Since 2008, the U.S. has provided training, equipment, and intelligence through the Mérida Initiative. This is a substantial program that has equipped the Mexican government with $2.3 billion in military aid since 2008. This policy defies common sense as there is a long history of drug corruption in Mexico. The most powerful cartels have been protected, while their rivals have been targeted by the Mexican law enforcement. Inserting the Mexican military into the equation only adds another layer of ... Bangladesh then formed the eastern wing of the Pakistan and after many years of negligent and contemptuous governance, became the battlefield for the Pakistani Army and India backed Bangladeshi armed fighters. This work has themes which elicit comparisons with Exit West by Mohsin Hamid . Both of the books feature a city torn with civil war and main characters who are subject to a sudden upheaval in their lives once the infighting starts. The Chocolate War Character Analysis The most memorable character in the book The chocolate War was Jerry Renault in my view because he was a very influential character and stood up for what he believed in. The first thing that stood out to me was that Jerry s mother had just passed away which was a very hard thing to over come. He is also becoming a stronger person because he has decided to stand against the universe, because he is tired of getting pushed around and told what to do. Also with the vigils breathing down his neck to complete the assignment of not selling for the chocolate sale was a big deal and put stress on him. I also feel that Jerry has become a stronger person because he has to watch after his father. Jerry has become worried that his father is living ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Goal of the United States Criminal Justice System Within the United States Criminal Justice System, it is not only goal to simply punish those who break the law, but to also reduce the level of criminal activity. This song, in particular, is targeted towards women, especially young women who are still developing. In all six of Beyoncé s solo studio albums, there are songs with galvanizing messages of female power and all of them reached number 1 on the charts. In Beyoncé s song Pretty Hurts, she uses social issues, rhetorical appeals such as pathos, literary devices, metaphors, and vivid imagery to further the theme of female empowerment. Pretty Hurts is the opening track on her self titled album, and I believe that this makes a statement towards the contemporary feminists issues of today. There are many different social problems that the song tackles. RFID, also known as Radio Frequency Identification Device, is making it easier for the consumer to pay without swiping their card or without signing. Many already know RFID as pay pass where you simply wave your credit card over an RFID transmitter to pay for purchases. There are many benefits and cons to this new technology for the consumer and the producer alike. RFID has been around longer than the average American realizes. In World War II we start to see this new technology emerge in the form of a radar. A handful of nations used the radar to detect approaching planes from miles out. Similar technology, such as the IFF transponder, was routinely used by the allies and Germany in World War II to identify aircraft as friend or foe (Stockman, 1948). In the 1950 s 1960 s scientists did research on how Radio Frequency could be used to distinguish objects remotely. Companies soon began to create anti theft systems that used Radio Frequency to determine if something had been paid for or not. This technology is still used today in stores all around the world. As you enter or leave a store you walk through two gay columns on either side of the door, these are used as the transmitter and in every item in the store there is a chip. If the chip is not deactivated as the consumer checks out, then it will send a signal to the transmitter in the gray columns and the transmitter will in turn sound an alarm. This alerts the store that something has either been stolen or it was not fully scanned (Roberti, The History of RFID Technology ). On January 23, 1973 Mario W. Cardullo received the first U.S. patent for an active RFID tag rewriteable memory. In the same year, a California entrepreneur named Charles Walton, received a patent for a passive transponder used to unlock a door without a key (Roberti, The History of RFID Technology ).
