•  Persepolis	is	a	French-language	autobiographical		
graphic	novel	by	Marjane	Satrapi	depic9ng	her	
childhood	up	to	her	early	adult	years	in	Iran	
during	and	a;er	the	Islamic	revolu.on	(1979).		
•  The	9tle	is	a	reference	to	the	ancient	capital	of	
the	Persian	Empire,	Persepolis.	It	was	published	
between	2003	and	2005.	
•  Drawn	in	black	and	white,	the	comic	found	great	
popularity	following	its	release,	and	was	
translated	into	several	languages.
•  Satrapi	grew	up	in	Tehran	to	a	middle-class	
Iranian	family.	Her	parents	were	highly	educated	
and	poli9cally	ac9ve,	that	supported	causes	
against	the	monarchy	of	the	Shah.		
•  When	the	Iranian	Revolu9on	took	place	they	
were	dismayed	and	in9midated	by	the	Muslim	
fundamentalists	who	took	power.	
•  Her	parents	grew	concerned	that	the	young	
Marjane	would	run	afoul	of	the	strict	new	public	
codes	for	women.	They	arranged	for	her	to	study	
abroad	and	in	1983	she	arrived	in	Vienna.
The	Iranian	Revolu.on,	also	known	as	the	Islamic	
Revolu.on	of	Iran	or	the	1979	Revolu.on,	is	an	
event	involving	the	overthrow	of	the	Pahlavi	
dynasty,	who	was	supported	by	the	United	States	
and	United	Kingdom,	and	its	replacement	with	an	
Islamic	republic.	
Demonstra9ons	against	the	Shah	started	in	1977,	
developing	into	a	campaign	of	civil	resistance	that	
was	partly	secular	and	partly	religious.	Strikes	and	
demonstra9ons	paralyzed	the	country.
