Vicks conducted an innovative mobile ad campaign for their Behind Ear Thermometer. They used multiple data sources to target mothers in areas with high flu rates. Google flu data identified high risk zones. Demographic data from apps like Pandora identified mothers. Location data from Where.com targeted mothers within 3 miles of stores. Mothers received in-app ads about being in high risk areas and directing them to retailers. Clicking the ads showed a video on the thermometer's benefits. While highly targeted, such location-based ads could creep out consumers if not designed carefully.

One-in-two mobile owners in the US owns a smartphone, and many more own tablets. As most of these same consumers adapt their personal lifestyle to be “mobile first,” they expect their employers to be there to meet them. With the growing number of personal mobile devices in the hands of users, as well as increasingly remote organizations , there’s a great opportunity for organizations to increase productivity of their employees by allowing the use of these personal devices. Taking this on seems daunting, as IT has less ability to enforce a single standard than ever before. Not taking action, however, and ignoring this trend risks exposing corporate data to public clouds with no visibility on the part of IT. Enforcing a single standard will do a lot to serve all users partially, but none particularly well. "Power to the People: Identify and Empower Your Workforce," the new report by Altimeter Group analyst Chris Silva explores how companies are deploying mobile strategies to meet the the specific needs of their employees and the organization at large.
Digital Influence is one of the hottest trends in social media, yet is largely misunderstood. "The Rise of Digital Influence," the new report by Altimeter Group Principal Analyst Brian Solis, is a 'how-to' guide for businesses to spark desirable effects and outcomes through social media influence. The report helps companies understand how influence spreads, and includes case studies in which brands partnered with vendors to recruit connected consumers for digital influence campaigns. Brian evaluates the offerings of 14 Influence vendors, organizing them by Reach, Resonance, and Relevance: the Three Pillars that make up the foundation for Digital Influence as defined in the report. Also included are an Influence Framework and an Influence Action Plan to help brands identify connected consumers and to define and measure strategic digital influence initiatives.

Insights: Interviews on the Future of Social Media - Edited by Anil Dash & Gi...Brian Solis
This book was created as an exclusive reward for backers
of ThinkUp in the fall of 2013. The interviews
documented here took place over the span of several
months, but have been edited as lightly as possible to
best capture the energy and inspiration of the
interviewees.
The book’s first goal is to help members get more value out of using ThinkUp. More deeply, we hope these interviews reveal the thought involved in creating technology that is meaningful, built on ideas thatemerge over years or even decades of work.

Virtual reality is no longer an off-in-the-distance idea. It’s a quickly emerging trend with which wise marketers and communicators are already experimenting. Read our guidebook and start taking advantage of emerging VR platforms and tools.
Earlier this year, we launched the People’s Lab crowdsourcing platform and approach to help our clients crowdsource insights and innovation. People’s Lab forms the core of our distinctive insights and foresight approach, which consists of four elements: organic conversation analysis, MSLGROUP’s own insight communities, client-specific insights communities, and ethnographic deep dives into these communities. This four-part approach helps us distill a deep understanding of societal values, consumption behaviors and attitudes towards brands, not only in terms of insights that help explain our world today, but also foresights that give us a glimpse of future worlds.

How Open is Eating the World (and What it Means for Marketing)
Open source has been one of the biggest stories in the world of software over the past decade and more. And, today, the principles underpinning the open source software movement are cropping up in more and more different forms in more and more different places. If you have any connection to marketing in just about any field, these trends are affecting you.
This presentation will take you through what open source really means. (Hint, it's not just free software.) It will discuss the bigger trends around openness and collaboration. And it will look at some of the business model implications, both of working with open and competing with it.
This presentation will have a broader scope and will focus less on the technical aspects, but it will have common threads with this one that I presented at the Linux Collaboration Summit in San Francisco earlier in April: http://bitmason.blogspot.com/2013/04/my-presentation-from-linux.html
The traditional brick-and-mortar business model is no longer the only option for the aspiring entrepreneur. Many of today’s greatest successes belong to those who have captured the power of the viral loop by designing products and services that spread themselves through the channels of the Internet, propelled by word-of-mouth recommendations.
The Second Technology Revolution: How the PR Business Needs To Change Once AgainMSL
Not even a decade after the PR industry turned on its head when social media ushered in the Age of Influence, technology once again is causing brands, companies and organizations to rethink its communication in dramatic ways. This time machines that process data and artificial intelligence, combined with immersive technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality, are creating new opportunities for “augmented influence” as well as giving communicators pause to manage a number of emerging new challenges from Machine Journalism to Artificial Influence.

Next Generation Social Media: Alignment of Business Processes and Social Inte...Vinay Mummigatti
As enterprises try to catch up with the social media buzz, many companies are starting to realize that it is difficult to define tangible business outcomes around social media investments. Social intelligence and social analytics are new con- cepts which have the potential to help enterprises move beyond basic marketing and define a goal-oriented strategy around social media.
The next wave of social media investments will be in enterprise programs that are designed to facilitate participation in social media interactions, analyzing the data generated and taking real time actions that govern product, marketing, distribu- tion and pricing processes.
The larger ecosystem of any enterprise includes business partners, employees and customers. Each of these constituents plays an important role in processes that govern innovation, customer experience, collaboration, supply chain, talent management and overall business growth. Social media is emerging as the glue that binds these groups and creates tidal waves that can make or break the fu- ture of any company. The only way organizations can ride this wave successfully is to track the social interactions, derive events and patterns that can lead to business process improvements across different functional areas. Another aspect of social media which is internal to an enterprise is in terms of collaborative busi- ness processes where collective knowledge sharing and decision-making is greatly enhanced through social tools.
Certain emerging trends in technology such as the collaboration between social media and mobile technology providers have created a revolution in the adoption rate of social media. The confluence of social media and mobile technologies is creating upheaval not just in competitive dynamics but also across social and po- litical spheres.

Brands will need to create content that engages and “reaches” consumers across channels, provide valuable services over mere advertising and master an increasingly complicated and expansive content distribution model. And, of course, they will need to rethink the way they create relationships (or conversations) with
consumers before it’s too late.

Is Technology Removing the ‘Care’ from Healthcare?MSL

New solutions are critical to embrace the benefits of improved digital technology in personalised care, while ensuring that patients are not marginalised in the process.
An enquiry led by US cardiologist, geneticist and digital medicine expert, Dr Eric Topol, explores how to support the deployment of digital healthcare technologies throughout the NHS.

SCOTUS Launches New Economy with Legalized Sports BettingMSL
In a 6-3 decision in the case Murphy vs. National Collegiate Athletic Association, SCOTUS ruled that because Congress exceeded its constitutional authority when it passed PAPSA. In essence, Congress tried to prohibit state legislatures from repealing their existing statues that outlawed sports betting. Under a line of Supreme Court precedent known as the anti-commandeering doctrine, federal efforts to coerce states into enforcing federal law are unconstitutional violations of the Tenth Amendment.
To say this is just the beginning would be cliché, but what SCOTUS has wrought with its decision will have lasting consequences that go far beyond sports betting.
Our current consumption patterns are stretched to breaking point. Few would argue the need to fix our systems. It’s how to manage an economically viable and just transition that is making heads ache.

SDG Signals - SBTribe Research by Salterbaxter MSLMSL
It’s been two years since the launch of the SDGs and the UN’s recent progress report highlights that support is uneven and needs to accelerate. New data sources, including

SDG Signals uncovers new insights about SDG communications online and which areas, people and brands are cutting through. We explore the overall SDG online conversation, providing clear opportunities for differentiation, with initial comparisons from the Technology and Food & Beverage sectors. Future editions will put the spotlight on other specific sectors and issue areas.
A joint initiative conducted by MSL and SPARK Neuro gives PR pros true cause for excitement. What was once only subjective – how much people are engaged with content and their emotional experience with it – can now be directly quantified by reading brain activity and other neurological responses.

Each year, Directions takes an in-depth look at an area of sustainability and communications. This time, we’re delving into the quite sizeable gap that still exists between business and society. It’s not the void that interests us so much as the question of how it can be shrunk.
How do we move from just minding the gap to actually mending the gap?

The ICCO Global Summit which took place in Oxford, UK, from 29-30 September, 2016 offered two days of great conversations with colleagues coming from all over the world. MSLGROUP's SVP & Chief Strategy Officer, Pascal Beucler was invited to discuss why Branded Content and Entertainment are a new boundary, and a sweet spot to hit for PR professionals.
Based on Pascal's experience last June at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, as a juror in the newly created Entertainment Jury: this has been a week-long fantastic experience, evaluating how talent and ample narrative formats can elevate content into the cultural mainstream.
Role of Millennials and their Impact on Reputation ManagementMSL
Pascal Beucler assesses why Millennials are a generation that matters. They are a highly influential force. And their importance is only skyrocketing. If you’re not where Millennials expect you to be, you’re nowhere. Millennials strongly impact reputation in their roles as: consumers, employees & brand advocates.

Vicks Mobile Ad
Campaign
2. Innovative ad targeting campaign
In early 2012, Vicks combined several layers of data to reach U.S.
moms in high flu zones with mobile ads for their premium Behind Ear
Thermometer.
springwise.com
3. The mobile experience
Moms received in-app ads which warned them that they were in high flu
zones and directed them to the closest retailer. On clicking the ads,
moms were shown a video on the benefits of the thermometer.

4. Layer 1: Google flu data
Vicks used Google Flu trends to find out which areas were experiencing
high incidences of flu. Google uses search trends and IP addresses to
determine the locations, and provides this data for free online.
1) nytimes.com, 2) google.org/flutrends/us/#cities
5. Layer 2: Demographic data
Vicks was able to reach moms and expecting moms through mobile
apps such as Pandora which collect user data including age, gender,
marital status and whether they are parents.

6. Layer 3: Location data
Vicks used real-time data from location based mobile advertising
network Where.com to target moms when they were within 3 miles of a
closest retail store that stocks the Behind Ear Thermometers.
site.where.com
7. Highly relevant proposition
Thinkers point out that the ad campaign is highly relevant as it reaches
only moms that meet all the targeting criteria and at a time when they
are most likely to make the purchase.

8. Privacy is a rising concern
Marketers and healthcare specialists predict that the increasing power
and possibilities of targeting options will lead to a widespread debate on
protection of privacy and call for newer and more relevant laws.

9. Targeted ads are “creepy”
Thinkers point out that targeted ads and location-based ads can creep
out consumers, and that campaigns should be designed to appear less
targeted to avoid ‘spooking out’ consumers.

10. Big Data
Big Data has been receiving an increasing amount of attention in recent
months, as the amount of data captured increases and brands become
more data savvy.
