Mr Hayden Parkes
 The game sense approach focuses on 
highlighting the ‘play’ aspects of sport, with it 
assumed that most games contain the same 
principles. (Curriculum Support) 
 The skills needed to participate in these 
games or sports are taught as a step by step 
process, with students slowly learning to 
piece them together in order to complete the 
full sequence.
 Game sense separates games into four key 
gaming areas: 
-Invasion Games 
-Target Games 
-Striking and Fielding games 
-Net and Wall games (Jakcie O’connell 
Curriculum Support) 
 Students are encouraged to take control, as it 
takes on a student centered approach. 
 Most activities are paused, with student 
reflection on participation encouraged. (Shane, 
Pill, Australian Sports Commission)
 The game sense approach gives students the 
ability to compete or participate at their own 
level, with no pressure or stress being placed on 
the student. 
 Students are able to reflect on their participation 
and progress, giving them the ability to improve 
their skills at their own pace. 
 A student centered approach, giving them the 
ability to change the game in order to gain 
different skills.
 Game sense focuses on the individual and not 
on the specific set of skills needed for that 
activity. 
 It is a universal method, as it can be used with 
all ages and manipulated to fulfil their needs. 
 It is an approach that can be used by any 
skilled teacher and can make for an 
encouraging, engaging and enjoyable PE 
lesson!
 Students need encouragement. Try to 
encourage children to make their own 
decisions when participating in games. 
 Let them set out the rules! 
 Ask questions to get the student thinking and 
encourage them to stop and reflect.
 PDHPE is an important part of a students 
education. Using the game sense approach 
makes it engaging, enjoyable and fun! 
 Lets try and highlight its importance so 
students come out of school with the 
knowledge and understanding they require to 
make some life decisions.
