3. SO WHAT IS THIS GAME SENSE APPROACH…
 The game sense approach is a variation of
Teaching games for understanding. The Game
sense approach includes the students having to
develop a broader more in-depth understanding
of sport and physical activity. It requires a basic
understanding of the sport so that the student
can than modify the game in a way that is
challenging for themselves.

4. More about Game Sense..
 The main reason that we use game sense approach to teach PDHPE is that it
allows us, as the teacher, to teach a fundamental movement and once the
students grasp this movement we can pause the game and QUESTION them.
These questions can include:
 How to do the task?
 How can we progress the task?
 The game sense approach is a stimulating approach to teaching rather than
using a direct teaching approach in PDHPE. The games are stopped at regular
intervals where the students are than asked to REFLECT and PROGRESS
(Australian Sports Commission).
 Teaching game sense is important in emphasising manipulative skills, games,
development and active lifestyle. All of which are important points in the syllabus

Enough about the theory.. How do we implement it
and WHY?

6. WHY?
Game sense approach encourages students to perform at an
individual and a team effort (Light, 2006). It builds confidence
and team work at its best! Through using invasion and striking
games, game sense approach is evidently shown to improve
the basic fundamental movements in students and students
are shown to be interested and willing to adapt and modify
the games to continue to make the game interesting. By
adapting the games students are going to stay interacted and
interested in the lesson. It keeps the students engaged.

7. Strengths
Strengths in the Game Sense Approach..
• Games that are taught in PDHPE via game sense
approach act in a form of teaching through
conversation (Light & Fawns, 2003). It allows the
students to express through their mind (speech) and
their body (action).
• Game sense approach is effective in terms of it being
an ideal holistic learning approach which proves to
be cognitive, social and physical learning.
SO HOW CAN YOU HELP?
You as parents can emphasise the importance of game
sense to your children by getting outside and playing
games with your kids where you stop and ask them how
to make the game a little bit harder once you
accomplish a skill! Good-luck and remember it is about
