primary schools
Miss Trikas 6T class
Importance of PDHPE
•

It is vital for primary school children to learn about the importance of
nutrition, the goal is to help children to understand why having a healthy diet
is so important, and to teach children about developing healthy eating
habits.

•

PDHPE teaches our children to be happy and healthy. It is important for our
children to learn how to be responsible people in our society.

•

Learning PDHPE will develop general and relevant knowledge and skills.

•

PDHPE encourages students to value themselves and to respect others.

•

PDHPE is an important subject because it teaches children to make safe
decisions about being healthy.

•

Importantly PDHPE allows students to learn about being physically active, to
have fun and to learn how to work together as a group and as a person in a
society.
Getting The Statistics
•

Research has shown that a large amount of children don’t meet the basic
healthy eating recommendations.

•

Over the last 25 years, rates of obesity have risen in many countries around
the world, including Australia.

•

The 2007 Australian National Children’s Nutrition and Physical Activity
Survey showed About one in four boys and girls (23%) were classified as
overweight or obese.

•

Many children consumed an excessive amount of saturated fat, which is a
risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

•

On the days surveyed, over half of the boys (55%) and two-thirds of the girls
(66%) aged between five and eight years met the number of pedometer
steps recommended by the Presidential Council on Fitness and Sport 2002.
Encouraging A Healthy Lifestyle
• PDHPE places an importance on a
healthy lifestyle for children.
• Learning about being healthy will
encourage children to live a balanced and
healthy lifestyle.
• Decreasing problems such as obesity and
issues related with illness.
What Can Parents Do?
• Importance is lacking on PDHPE, parents
and teachers can work together to
educate their children about living a
healthy and active lifestyle.
• Making PDHPE an important and valued
part of our children’s lives will benefit them
in a positive way.
