What problem does PDHPE
address?


Obesity is a major issue in Australia. Many chronic diseases can be
attributed to an increase in unhealthy diets and a growing lack of
physical activity



According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2009-2010, June), in
2007-2008, one quarter of all Australian children between the ages
of 5 and 17 were overweight or obese. The rate of obesity among
boys doubled from 5% in 1995 to 10% in 2007-2008.



PDHPE also addresses common issues such as children engaging in
smoking, drugs and sex at a earlier age.
Why is PDHPE important for primary
school?


PHDPE is important for primary school for various reasons

1.

It allows children to develop a physically active lifestyle at an early
age. An early foundation in this aspect is significantly beneficial for
a child’s future development

2.

PHDPE addresses not only healthy lifestyles, but a safe lifestyle.
Learning about safety in the home and community is helpful for all
ages, but particularly younger children.

PDHPE programs play a key role in helping student’s become
responsible people
Benefits of PDHPE

Through PDHPE, children are able to make better informed decisions
regarding a variety of issues such as drugs, smoking and sex.



It promotes a valuing of self and others, helping children to
appreciate and tolerate diversity

Physical, social, cognitive and emotional growth is fostered through
PDHPE (Board of Studies, 2006)



PDHPE promotes responsible and physically healthy activity. It
teaches skills that enable action for better health and movement
(Board of Studies, 2006)



It is enjoyable and creates relationships in school and in the
community

Everyone can play a part. With the support of parents, schools will
be better able to promote PDHPE in schools.
