It is the first 24-hour operational airport in Japan and constructed 5km offshore in Osaka bay as a man-made island in order to avoid the impact of aircraft noise on residential areas (Figure 1.1). Kansai opened 4 September 1994 to relieve overcrowding at Osaka International Airport. An artificial island, 4 km (2.5 mi) long and 2.5 km (1.6 mi) wide, was proposed.Kansai International airport features 24-hour operability, convenience of transfer between international and domestic flights, and diverse accesses by highway, railways and high-speed ferry.
In the past, concrete pavements were associated with increased tire/pavement noise. In recent years, however, the Next Generation Concrete Surface (NGCS) has provided quieter travel, increased friction and improved ride. The innovative texture provides for a smoother, more uniform ride. Diamond grinding provides increased macro-texture, creating a safer road in wet weather conditions.Tests have shown a decrease in tire/pavement noise by 75%.

Shortcreting has proved to be the best method for construction of curved surfaces. Domes are now much easier to construct with the advent of shotcrete technology. Tunnel linings are also becoming easy with this technology. Not only are these but there a wide range of applications where this technology has been a leading one. This technical paper includes the concept of shotcrete and how it differs from conventional concrete. It also enumerates the different types of process involved in shotcreting i.e. dry mix process and wet mix process. Advantages of shotcrete and its applications in various fields like tunneling, canals, buildings etc. are specified in detail. This paper presents an overview of shotcreting technology along with its applications.
DEFINITION OF SHOTCRETE:-
Shotcrete is a mortar or high performance concrete conveyed through a hose and pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a backing surface. It is the force of this spraying action that leads to compaction of the concrete or mortar which then forms layers of concrete to the required thickness. Shotcreting has been an acceptable way of placing cementitious material in a variety of applications.
Usually patented polypropylene fibers are included in the shotcrete which increases the cohesive nature of the shotcrete through mechanically binding the cementitious materials together. This mechanism reduces the rebound waste that occurs through the shotcreting process and these fibers also resist plastic shrinkage and cracking through their ability to enhance the early stage tensile strength of concrete.
Shotcrete also gives better surface finishes and reduces surface tearing on non- linear sections. Cementitious material containing the poly propylene fibers resist cycles of freezing and thawing and also reduces the chances of water and chemical penetrations.
DOWEL BAR RETROFIT (DBR) is a Concrete Pavement Preservation (CPP) tool that restores load transfer across joints and cracks by installing dowel bars linking the adjoining slabs. By linking slabs, the traffic load is shared, preventing differential vertical movement of the slabs at the joints and cracks, thereby eliminating the formation of faults or stepoffs. It is these faults that cause the rough ride and wheel slap that is sensed when traveling on a concrete roadway that has lost its ability to transfer load from one panel to the next.
Uncontrolled water ingress, especially water from a pavement’s surface, contributes to multiple types of pavement distress. It can lead to spalling, base or subgrade softening, dowel bar corrosion, pavement joint blow-ups and/or materials-related distress.
There are two stitching methods used to repair and strengthen longitudinal cracks or joints in concrete pavement. The first, and most common, is cross-stitching. Cross-stitching uses deformed tie bars epoxied or grouted into holes drilled at an angle through a crack or joint. The second, slot-stitching, uses deformed tie bars grouted into slots cut across a joint or crack. Each technique is beneficial for certain circumstances. Recommendations on where to use these methods are outlined in this special report.
Diamond grinding and patching on U.S. 67 in Arkansas exemplifies how CPP can extend the life of a concrete pavement while improving its functionality. The restored pavement was smoother than it was on the day it was built—and this was all for a price less than that of a standard asphalt overlay.
It has consistently been found that slurry has no negative effect on roadside vegetation or soil; in fact, it has agricultural liming potential. If CGR slurry deposited along roadsides can be utilized as a liming agent, it can promote plant health while minimizing the costs associated with hauling slurry off-site for disposal—a win-win situation for all involved.
The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) uses longitudinal diamond grooving for safety on asphalt as well as concrete pavements. Grooving costs less than overlays, is a long-term, low-maintenance solution, and has excellent skid test results. Work can be performed year-round, even in low temperatures. There is minimal traffic disruption during construction. ODOT installed grooving at three locations.
When Houston's Katy Freeway reopened after construction in 2009, increased vehicle speeds and transversely tined pavement surfaces created a noise level that was unacceptable to residents of surrounding villages. Funding was secured not only from TxDOT but also from the City of Houston and four villages. Transverse grooving was removed and NGCS was installed, improving noise significantly.
The Ohio DOT specifies longitudinal diamond grooving (which helps reduce hydroplaning, increases drainage at the tire/pavement interface and aids in vehicle control) on concrete bridge decks. The superior safety performance encouraged the department to use the technique on several sections of asphalt pavement.
For most concrete pavements, proactively sealing or filling transverse and longitudinal joints improves long-term pavement performance. These procedures reduce water penetration, which can lead to erosion and subsequent pavement damage, and also reduce entry into the joint of incompressibles that exert pressure on the pavement.
CPP has long been used on deteriorated highways, but it also offers an alternative to asphalt overlays when rehabilitating city streets constructed of concrete. Minneapolis’s renewed pavements are expected to last another 25 years, making the total lifespan of the concrete streets 65-70 years. With only one major preservation cycle during that timeframe, this translates into a very low annual cost for concrete city streets.

Pavement Surface: an important consideration in Korea's long tunnels
1. THE NEXT GENERATION
CONCRETE SURFACE
PAVEMENT SURFACE: AN IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION IN KOREA'S LONG TUNNELS

2. NGCS
South Korea may not be
known for is size, but it has
more than its share of cars.
A surface treatment
developed in the U.S.—the
Next Generation Concrete
Surface (NGCS)—has been
widely employed on their
roadway network to
maintain a safe, smooth
driving environment for
the driving public.
3. When It All Began
Improvements to the South
Korean road network began in
the 1960s. Construction of
the Gyeongbu Expressway in
1970 was a major milestone.
Today, travel times across
South Korea have shortened
dramatically and by 2020, a
national circular road network
will be completed.
4. Need for Tunnels
Because of the topography, South Korea’s road network contains
numerous tunnels and bridges. For expressways currently under
construction, tunnels represent 43 percent of their length.
5. Tunnel Construction Challenges
In addition to the drilling,
boring and excavation
operations required, the
paving operations within
these structures pose
their own challenges: the
tight confines and lack of
clearance make it
difficult to construct a
smooth, quiet and
comfortable pavement
surface. Photo courtesy Hexacon, Inc.
6. NGCS as a Solution
To help meet their
safety needs and high
quality standards, the
Korea Expressway
Corporation (a company
that constructs and
operates expressway
networks in the
Republic of Korea and
internationally) chose to
install NGCS in its
tunnels. Photo courtesy Hexacon, Inc.
7. NGCS as a Solution
Developed by the
International Grooving &
Grinding Association
(IGGA) and the American
Concrete Pavement
Association at Purdue
University between 2006
and 2008, NGCS is the
quietest, non-porous
concrete surface available.
8. How Is It Installed?
Using conventional diamond grinding equipment, the first step is to flush grind the
concrete using 1/8-inch-wide blades with 0.035-inch spacers. (The Korean work
used a slightly wider spacer configuration to accommodate local aggregates and
concrete mix designs.) Then 1/8-inch-wide longitudinal grooves are saw-cut to a
depth of 1/8 to 3/16 at ½- to 5/8-inch centers.
9. Why NGCS?
Next Generation Concrete
Surfaces are smoother and
flatter than ordinary
pavements. Upward,
protruding textures on
ordinary pavement are
responsible for much of the
tire-pavement noise.
NGCS, however, has a
consistent profile with a
predominantly negative
texture, absent of upward
texture.
10. How Much Is Being Used Today?
NGCS is used throughout
South Korea on all new
expressway tunnels that are
two kilometers (1.24 miles) or
more in length.
Use of the surface is now
expanding to national
highways and local roads as
well. There are nearly 1.5
million square yards--200 lane
miles--of NGCS in South Korea
as of 2019. Photo courtesy Hexacon, Inc.
11. Hexacon, Inc.
NGCS installation performed by IGGA member company Hexacon, Inc. is
representative of surface treatments done across the country.
Hexacon was established in 2013, when it acquired two Diamond Products
PC-6000 grinding machines and offered services as a diamond grinding
company.
12. Advantages of NGCS
Currently, most NGCS in South
Korea has been installed in
tunnels, but the surface is
rapidly being applied to
highway pavement and bridges
because of its various
advantages such as:
Quiet ride
Safety
Smooth driving surface

13. The IGGA Is Proud to Be Part of the Solution
“The NGCS and its smooth,
low noise, high friction surface
is a perfect fit for the road
building and maintenance
challenges we see across the
Globe.”
