Paul Henry was a Northern Irish painter born in 1877 who is known for his Post-Impressionist landscapes of Ireland. He studied art in Belfast and Paris before moving to London in 1901. In 1910, he visited Achill Island and was deeply moved by the harsh living conditions, staying to paint the island's people and landscapes for 10 years. His 1911 exhibition featuring these paintings received praise for its realistic portrayal of Irish life without sentimentality. Henry helped establish the Society of Dublin Painters and achieved international recognition, though he was distressed by the impact of tourism on Achill Island. He is remembered for his authentic representations of the Irish countryside.
