My grandpa, Leon Makielski, was a well-known artist, creating over 3000 works of art over his lifetime. But the one work of art he produced that I will remember most is the house he built from an old barn with his own hands.
This is Adam’s fifth Summer Loan Exhibition drawn exclusively from Private Collections from both North and South of the border. The Summer exhibition this year celebrates the significant role that women have played in the history of Irish art, be it through their own craft, their organisational skills and their encouragement and support of younger artists; a role that has too often been overlooked.
An introduction to African American painters and sculptors working in the nineteenth century, including Joshua Johnson, Robert Duncanson, Grafton Tyler Brown, Edward Mitchell Bannister, Edmonia Lewis, and Henry Ossawa Tanner.

Furness is a Georgian house of great character in the heart of Co. Kildare. Built in about 1740 for Richard Nevill, it was attributed by the late Knight of Glin to Francis Bindon, the architect and portrait painter who created some of Ireland’s most elegant country houses, including Woodstock and Castlemorres in Co. Kilkenny; he also collaborated with Richard Cassels on the design of Russborough, which he completed after Cassels’ death in 1751. Additions were made later in the century, including the fine plasterwork by Michael Stapleton in the drawingroom. Following the death of a later Richard Nevill in 1822 Furness passed to [edit] the Beauman family, and in 1897 was bought by N.J. Synnott. By this time it had become dilapidated, and the new owner carried out a thorough restoration, while retaining the character of the original building. In 1962 the view from the entrance front was embellished with a dramatic addition – a column surmounted by the figure of Mercury, formerly at Dangan in Co. Meath (the boyhood home of the Duke of Wellington) and brought to Furness as a 21st birthday present to David Synnott from his father. In the 1980s Furness featured in the TV adaptation of the Irish RM stories of Somerville and Ross, in which it appeared as Castle Knox, the home of Sir Valentine and Lady Knox and their daughter Sally. David Synott sold the house in 1987 and it became the home of Patrick and Louise Guinness in 1994. Patrick is the son of the Hon. Desmond Guinness and his first wife Mariga (the Princess Marie Gabrielle von Urach), co-founders of the Irish Georgian Society; Louise was a noted designer of classical interiors in London. Together they reroofed the house and arranged a light and cheerful theme for Furness, including paint schemes, wallpapers, rugs, lamps and four-poster beds. As their 4 children have ‘flown the nest’, Mr and Mrs Guinness have decided to downsize and sell their home and many of the contents. The sale includes period furniture, paintings and drawings, wonderful silver and objets d’art, rare examples of carriages and coaches, garden furniture, and statuary etc., A fine library of books, important manuscript letters and maps, which give an insight into Patrick’s interest in local and Irish history relating to Irish politics going back to the patriot and Irish Whig parties

ernard Nevill, textile designer and educator, who
died in January 2019 aged 88, was a passionate
collector of antiques throughout his life.
Nevill was evasive about his childhood and education.
At age 16 he became the youngest student in St
Martin’s School of Art, where he was taught dress
design and fashion by Muriel Pemberton, and he later
studied under Madge Garland at the Royal College of
Art; he later lectured at both places. The 1950s were
unwelcoming to young designers, but he succeeded in
establishing a name for himself doing freelance work,
and in 1961 was employed by the London department
store of Liberty & Co., first as design consultant and
then as design director. He had a keen instinct, not
only for what was to be valued in the past but for
what trends in fashion were likely to evoke interest.
As a lecturer and as a designer, his erudition and
enthusiasm infected all around him, both students
and clients.
After leaving Liberty’s in 1972, he designed textiles for
another thirty years. His work brought him sufficient
income to buy houses in which to store his mounting
collection of books, textiles, clothes, furniture,
and objets d’art, some of them vast. His immense
collection of original sample books, design books, etc.,
with samples from William Morris and others, cloth of
all types, silks etc. which he amassed while at Liberty’s
and later.
In 1976 he purchased West House in Chelsea,
which he emptied of its contents, cramming his own
acquisitions into the fifteen rooms; and in 1977 he
bought the stable block at Fonthill estate in Wiltshire,
the demesne in which William Thomas Beckford had
built his huge mansion to the design of James Wyatt.
In 1987 one of his rooms in West House was used as
Uncle Monty’s London home in the cult film “Withnail
and I”. Income from “Withnail” enabled him to buy
more antiques, which took up even more space. Nevill
never completed work on either of his houses – he was
always too busy seeking, buying and arranging more
antiques. Collecting, he told his friends, was a disease
– he simply had to rescue beautiful objects even when
he had no use for them, as he wanted to save them
from death.
At age 80 he fell ill and had to part company first with
West House and then Fonthill, the contents being
put up for auction. He took only his most treasured
possessions to his new home, a flat in Cheyne Walk,
Chelsea. Crates of antiques that he could neither bring
with him nor bear to part with remained in storage until
he died.
This sale includes a large collection of furniture,
pictures, copperware, glass and delph-ware,
ornaments, and an important collection of fabrics,
curtains, sample books, and sample fabrics, rugs
etc. from West House and Fonthill. See Lot 1263,
a large collection of sample books, sample fabrics,
original drawings/designs of clothing, fabrics, carpets,
wallpaper, furniture etc., catalogues, reference books
is of particular importance, see description.
A large collection of books from the various libraries
created by Bernard will feature in our Rare Book Sale
in Dublin on December 8th. Julian C. Walton

E
rica de Bary was born in Berlin on 4 January
1907, the only child of Erich Kramer (who died
before she was born) and his wife Elisabeth. Her
mother’s childhood had been spent in St Petersburg,
and Erica inherited from her a love of the culture and
traditions of pre-revolutionary Russia. An African doll
given her by an uncle instilled in her a yearning to visit
Africa. Erica’s mother remarried in 1914 and had two
further children; the family lived at Eisenach in east
Germany.
In 1927, while working in Berlin, Erica met Herbert de
Bary; they were married in 1931 and had two children,
a daughter Erdmuthe (1932) and a son Harald (1935).
They lived in part of the de Bary villa in Frankfurt,
where Herbert worked as a wine consultant. Erica
attended the university lectures on African culture of
the ethnologist Leo Frobenius
Herbert and Erica, who both spoke French fluently,
spent the years 1941-1944 in Paris, where Herbert
was adjutant to a Luftwaffe general, Erica wrote for the
German-language newspaper, and they jointly edited
an illustrated literary periodical. She met prominent
authors such as Paul Valéry and Jean-Paul Sartre and
formed friendships with some of them. Here, too, she
met literary figures from the French African colonies
who were “locked down” in Paris for the duration
of the war, in particular the poets Leopold Senghor
(later the first president of an independent Senegal)
and Jacques Rabemananjara (later vice-president
of Madagascar), both of whom were founders of the
négritude movement – the promotion of a pan-African
culture and identity worldwide.
A compulsive writer all her life, Erica kept diaries
and notebooks, and published folk-tales, essays,
travelogues, poems, and translations of authors such
as Ionesco. In 1952 she and Herbert made the first of
what proved to be many expeditions to Africa. Their
spell in Morocco awakened Erica’s love of the desert
and was followed in later years by trips to Algeria, the
ancient oasis-city of Ghadames in Libya, the Saharan
settlements of Rhat and Tassili, and elsewhere. Erica
related closely to the Tuareg peoples, sharing the
lives of the women. She kept detailed diaries of these
expeditions, which Herbert recorded on camera, and
they amassed important collections of African objects,
the majority of which are offered offered as lot 1436 in
this sale.
Through membership of the PEN Club, the de Barys
became friends of Heinrich Böll, author of Irisches
Tagebuch (Irish Journal). In 1971 Böll encouraged
the de Barys to visit Ireland, and they later bought
two former national schools in County Leitrim, one
as a studio for their artist son Harald and the other
as a second home for Erdmuthe. Several pieces of
the family collection, furniture, paintings and other
artefacts were removed from the de Bary villa in
Frankfurt at this time, and are also included in this
sale note in particular Lot 1361. In 1981 Herbert and
Erica spent their golden wedding anniversary visiting
Glendalough; here Herbert died peacefully.
In her widowhood, Erica continued to live in Frankfurt,
maintaining contacts with her African friends and
visiting Erdmuthe in County Leitrim during the summer.
She died on 17 April 2007, just three months after
celebrating her hundredth birthday. Julian C. Walton

n Father Brown’s Dublin (1980) Marie Jones is
photographed as a Feis Ceoil prize-winner, seated at
her piano in the section on Dublin in the 1930s. The
great photographer was a family friend, “a wonderful
man”, as Marie described him. As for the lady herself,
dying quietly in her sleep in her own bed in her 93rd
year, she represented not just a bygone age but the
personification of vast cultural interests that centred
on music but embraced art, architecture, literature
and even politics.
She had an extraordinary education. Graduating from
the Royal College of Music in London, she was accepted
into the class of Czesław Marek (1891-1985) in Zurich
and studied with him for four years, graduating with
first-class honours from the Swiss conservatoire.
Marek was a pupil of Theodor Leschetizky (1830-
1915), himself a pupil of Liszt, who had studied
with Czerny, who in turn was Beethoven’s pupil and
assistant. Many pianists nowadays falsely boast of a
lineage of teachers but that may involve a masterclass
or a week’s study. Marie had real expertise and real
music. She played many concerts in Europe, and with
the RTÉ Symphony and other orchestras and made
a Wigmore Hall debut, but her career as a concert
pianist morphed into teaching. For those of us who
were her pupils, many were lucky enough to become
her friends. What a thrill when she sat at one of her two
Steinway grand pianos and modestly said “I’ve been
working on” some piece and then played it all from
memory. These concerts often lasted an hour or more.
Offering to turn the pages, she’d say “I don’t need the
music.” Like so much, it was all in her heart.
From a family involved in theatre and architecture,
Marie inherited pieces from them but also collected
what was beautiful, all that had structure and poise.
Her home was a wonder of taste and a cave of
treasures, every piece fascinating. She cared as much
for people and followed her friends’ careers with pride.
Her modest suburban house was a treasure trove; but
that was not surprising as the woman herself was a
hidden wonder, a person whom it was a privilege to
know. Peter Charleton

Garech Domnagh De Brún, who died in 2018 aged
78, was the elder son of the fourth Baron Oranmore
and Browne and his second wife Oonagh Guinness, a
granddaughter of the first Earl of Iveagh. His mother
was a wealthy heiress and the youngest of the three
“Golden Guinness Girls.” His only full brother Tara
was killed in a motoring accident in 1966 aged 21,
an event which inspired John Lennon to write the
song “A Day in the Life.” His childhood was spent
partly at Castle McGarrett in County Mayo, where his
father farmed, and partly at Luggala, the enchanting
Wicklow retreat given to his mother by her father as a
wedding present. He was educated in Switzerland and
at Bryanston School in Dorsetshire.
The two dominant influences on his life were the
entertainments given by his mother at Luggala and
his experience of Irish music and the spoken word.
In 1959 he and his friend Dr Ivor Browne founded the
Claddagh record label; their first album, a record of
pipe music played by Leo Rowsome, sold out. Three
years later, he asked his friend the uilleann piper
Paddy Moloney to form a group for a one-off album;
this too proved a great success, and thus was born the
traditional music group The Chieftains. At this time,
Ireland was modernising rapidly and traditional ways
had fallen out of fashion, but de Brún’s enthusiasm
and determination bucked the trend and instigated a
revival which has continued ever since.
Further patronage of Irish music followed, and de
Brún also promoted writers such as Seamus Heaney,
Ted Hughes and Samuel Beckett.
In 1970 de Brún inherited Luggala from his mother.
Here he loved to entertain, and in the ensuing years
the house became a Mecca for musicians, painters and
poets, for actors and directors. Here too he kept his
rapidly growing collection of antiques and works of art.
In 1981 de Brún married the Princess Harshad Purna
Devi of Morvi in Bombay.
De Brún had a complex nature – intelligent, astute,
eccentric and shy, a lavish entertainer, his outward
arrogance concealing a desperate shyness and
insecurity, frequently kind and generous but subject
to alarming mood swings. His passing two years ago
deprived Ireland of one of its most vibrant personalities.
This sale includes a significant part of his valuable
collection: the cellar from Luggala, personal effects,
jewellery, pocket watches, family silver, objets d’art,
grand tour items, novelty items such as his “opium
chairs”, and his personal collection of unique Edward
Delaney bronzes. Julian Walton
