Topic 1: Past continuous
• The Past continuous is formed with the verb ‘to be’ in past and the
verb + ing.
• It is common to use a time expression indicating when the action
happened, e.g. last year, yesterday, two years ago.
Subject verb ‘to be’ + verb ing complement
Natalie was reading a book last night.
Topic 2. Past continuous
• Use the past continuous to express an action occurred for a longer
period in the past.
• I was watching TV last night.
• You can use time expressions such as last night, yesterday or a
specific time in the past.
Topic 2. Stative verbs
Stative verbs or non-continuous verbs cannot be used in the past
continuous form. These are some examples…
• Abstract Verbs
• be, want, cost, seem, need, care, contain, owe, exist...
• Possession Verbs
• possess, own, belong...
• Emotion Verbs
• like, love, hate, dislike, fear, envy,mind...
Examples:
• He was possessing a house last night. Not Correct
• He possessed a house last year. Correct
