Brandon Willey | @bwilley www.tasteredPear.com Kick start that partnership Date first. Get to know each other’s teams.  Grab coffee or some brew and learn about culture, capabilities,  and process. Get the legal out of the way. NDA, W-9, Billing Rate (agency rate?), etc. Start slowly with one smallish project, if possible. Determine transparency or white-label

Share current projects and future projects, who are your clients? What type of work do you pitch? What niches? Work on that next project together.  Share ideas as to what that project could look like.  Ramp up and build process together

They’re your clients but make it clear how  you would like your partner to handle your clients Set up a Retainer. Project/Client based Agency based Pay on Time or better yet, ahead of time.  You hold the keys but they do too - don’t let it get ugly This is a partnership after all

IE6 – ignore the data, trust your partner The right coding language or framework Be your partner’s advocate to your clients You don’t hold all the answers. Listen. Every once in a while we techies have creative ideas.  Trust the estimates but get clarification. You’ve got to support the estimate in the pitch Get Educated. The more you know the better you can pitch We love to talk about ourselves and our knowledge

QA together There will be bugs. Stomp them together. You have the fresh eyes Revisions and Resolution Leave some hours budgeted to fix stuff

Grab coffee or some brew and learn about culture, capabilities, and process. Get the legal out of the way. NDA, W-9, Billing Rate (agency rate?), etc. Start slowly with one smallish project, if possible. Determine transparency or white-label

Share current projects and future projects, who are your clients? What type of work do you pitch? What niches? Work on that next project together. Share ideas as to what that project could look like. Ramp up and build process together

They’re your clients but make it clear how you would like your partner to handle your clients Set up a Retainer. Project/Client based Agency based Pay on Time or better yet, ahead of time. You hold the keys but they do too - don’t let it get ugly This is a partnership after all

IE6 – ignore the data, trust your partner The right coding language or framework Be your partner’s advocate to your clients You don’t hold all the answers. Listen. Every once in a while we techies have creative ideas. Trust the estimates but get clarification. You’ve got to support the estimate in the pitch Get Educated. The more you know the better you can pitch We love to talk about ourselves and our knowledge

QA together There will be bugs. Stomp them together. You have the fresh eyes Revisions and Resolution Leave some hours budgeted to fix stuff

Editor's Notes

  1. We fancy ourselves quite skilled in the software realm. But even we have our limitations. We don’t program for native blackberry. We don’t write ASP.net or Cold Fusion. We don’t write Flex or Actionscript. There’s a chance that even if you do “Facebook development” you probably can’t thread a 3rd party event management software’s API into a Facebook application. There’s always a limitation.
  2. We now kick our design work out to a number of agencies and then they kick the development back. The end product rocks that much better. In fact, we work with agencies almost exclusively and in a number of cases we hand over the client relationship completely since you guys are so great at that stuff!
  3. We are students of technology. We are always learning, pushing, playing, pair programming, peer reviewing and getting better every day.
  4. Or Agency Fusion in Utah that focus on making you guys look awesome to your clients.
  5. You can always go to India or that independent guy that works from home. They work and they’re usually cheaper. Just be prepared. Be prepared for delays or longer turnarounds. Be prepared for unavailability if they’re out on vacation or booked up when you need them.
  6. They look forward to working with you again and again.
  7. Ramp up – There’s a good chance that the first several projects have already been pitched to the client and scope is already defined. That’s okay. Get through those and then work together on the next ones from the ground up.
  8. Retainer – As with any retainer the advantage is response time, loyalty, and security for all parties involved. Allows for questions at any time, accommodates time involved in scoping or quoting, etc.
  9. First - Now that you’ve established financial security and process you can begin to build trust and lean on each other’s expertise.
