researched (10-20 magazines), put them into categories based
on the name of magazine
EMPIRE TOTAL FILM DIGITAL FILMMAKER
4. 3. What is the purpose of film magazines? Why do they exist?
Can you link this to film marketing?
• One the purposes are that magazines provide a tactile
response, it is in your hands and you are reading it, that being
on the internet just cannot provide.
• Some magazines contain information that the internet can’t
or doesn’t include.
• Magazines provide extra money because its another way of
reaching to the audience. EG catching someones attension
with a beautiful model that they may not realise on the
internet.
5. 4. Where are film magazines available? Give examples
(even if not your chosen posters
• Film magazines are avaliable:
• Online
- Downloading it,
- Suscribing
- App to download so it will be avaliable for audience to view magazines on
mobiles, Ipads etc
• Supermarkets/Book stores
Total films have a app to
download on Iphones
You can read reviews, watch
trailer etc.
6. 5. What is the typical size for magazines? (can be more than
one)
• Magazines all have different sizes depending
on what is it released on. EG. Mobile phones,
ipads, other tablets etc.
• The standard size of a magazine is -
- 8 3/8” x 10 7/8” is an economical and common magazine
page size.
7. 6. How are magazine covers appealing/attractive to the audience? Does the
appeal/attraction differ than that of the film? (is it aimed at same target audience
as other advertising such as trailer/film?)
• The main focus of a magazine is the image/main person
because its the first thing that catches the audience attention.
As its in the centre and mostly in a direct address position
towards whoever is reading it.
• The second thing that is appealling is the main title because
its at the top of the magazine and its the boldest font out of
the whole texts around it.
8. 7. What are the conventions of magazine covers?
(different slides for different conventions)
• The main image is always posioned in the centre of the
front cover and they are positioned in a direct address.
• If the body is not placed that way then the face will
always face the audience.
9. Convention #2
• Masthead – Have different positions but those positions are
always based at the top, they can either be on the left side or
on the right side.
• Mastheads are the main text of the magazine so that it would
catch attention with the bold letters and make them easier to
read as people go past.
10. Convention #3
• Most texts such as slogans, competitions etc are on
the side of the cover to give space for main image in
the centre.
• If the texts were covering the main image in the
centre then this would make it translucent and not
catch as much audience.
11. 8. Similarities and differences between
magazines?
• Some similarities that are in magazines are
huge headlines, main image and the bold
masthead however the differences come from
within the similarities because each magazine
have a different style as to the organisation of
the text and their fonts used.
12. 9. Priorities: What do some magazine covers prioritise (make
most eye catching/bold/important)? What are the 3 most
prioritized features (3 most bold things)?
• Some magazines prioritise their logo because its part of
advertising. Moreover a logo is required so audience will
know the name of magazine.
• Secondly, another priority would be the main persons name
on the cover so curious people will know who it is.
• Thirdly, Another priority is the presentation of text, as they
have to have matching fonts and colours. Also be neatly in
order to not go over the main image.
