2. Headline
• A head line in a large font
statement which gives the reader
an idea of the content of the
article related to it. It is used to
get people attention so they
choose to purchase that paper
benefitting the creator of it. They
began being used due to
competition between newspaper
companies who then decided to
use the attention-grabbing
headlines.
3. Byline
• The byline in a newspaper is the
part that says who write the article
and can sometimes have a brief
article summary. The byline gives
credit to the author of that article
and informs the public who wrote it
allowing them to go on and find out
more about the author if they’re
interested.
4. Strapline
This is a sentence written near the
main headline that is smaller in font
size, however still bigger than the
standard font of the article to attract
some attention. This is usually used
to support the main headline
providing a little more information,
or it can be used to highlight a new
point to the reader.
5. Jump Line
The jump line is placed
near a story headline to
inform the reader which
page and column to go to if
they would like to continue
reading the article.
6. Masthead
This is placed at the top of the
paper which gives the
newspaper its title. This also
provides the date that the
newspaper was published and
where it was published.
7. Plug/Puff
A puff is a newspaper article
written about a person or
organization. These are very
flattering and are intended to
shine a positive light on them
which then triggers a positive
opinion from the reader
towards the
person/organisation.
8. Main Cover Image
The main cover image is typically related
to the main headline on the page. It takes
up a large portion of the front page and
usually uses a close up shot of the person
or a mid-wide shot if it is a larger
group/object, but the main person/object
of the image is normally central to the
shot to help emphasize them. The image
helps draw in attention from shoppers as
it is eye catching and doesn’t require
them to really focus or initially read
anything encouraging them to then
purchase the paper.
9. Caption
This is a sentence placed either
below, above or sometimes on the
image used to explain what the
image is to give the reader some
more insight into what the picture
is showing and what the article is
discussing.
10. Ears
Ears are spaces at the top of the
front page of the news paper which
allow space for things such as
advertisement, weather news, page
numbers or a special feature in the
newspaper e.g. coupons benefiting
the reader.
