Parents and online technologies: Parental Awareness of Youth Online Behaviors & Predicting Resistance to Protective Strategies (Sahara Byrne)

This document discusses a research study about parental awareness of youth online behaviors and predicting resistance to protective strategies. The study used an internet survey of 456 parent-child pairs in the US to examine how supportive parents would be of various protective strategies and how children would feel about their parents using those strategies. The results showed that strategic efforts to protect kids are most likely to be met with resistance from older teens, boys, and when parent-child communication is poor. The best strategies to avoid this "reactance" are those that empower children and involve industry/government responsibility, while the worst strategies are highly restrictive controls like co-viewing, access to devices, and content blocks.

This study compared the neuropsychological profiles of attention and related processes in 72 pediatric brain tumor survivors and 43 children with ADHD. The brain tumor survivors were divided into those with attention problems (n=13) and those without (n=59). Parents and teachers completed rating scales measuring inattention, executive functioning, and behavioral issues. Children completed tests of intelligence, processing speed, attention, and executive function. Results showed brain tumor survivors with attention problems had similar functional impairments to children with ADHD, including more neurocognitive deficits than survivors without attention problems. Screening brain tumor survivors for ADHD symptoms may help tailor interventions for those meeting criteria.
