Paramore, the Digital Agency, presents bi-annual Paramore University events where friends of the agency learn from brilliant digital thinkers and doers about how to improve their digital marketing. In typical Paramore style, the events are fun, entertaining, informative, and savvy.
Friends, a zombie apocalypse is upon us: an onslaught of new mobile devices, platforms, and screen sizes, hordes of them descending every day. We're outmatched. There aren't enough designers and developers to battle every platform. There aren't enough editors and writers to populate every screen size. Defeating the zombies will require flexibility and stamina—in our content. We'll have to separate our content from its form, so it can adapt appropriately to different contexts and constraints. We'll have to change our production workflow so we're not just shoveling content from one output to another. And we'll have to enhance our content management tools and interfaces so they're ready for the future. Surviving the zombie apocalypse is possible. In this talk Karen will explain how: by developing a content strategy for mobile.
Thriving in a world of change: Future-friendly content with DrupalKaren McGrane
There's always another redesign. There's always another new must-have front-end design effect. There's always another platform, a new screen resolution, the latest device. Underneath it all, there's content. What if we could get away from the cyclical churn, the constant reinvention? What if we could stop throwing the baby out with the bathwater? Instead of trying to get all new content every time there's a redesign (or worse, shoving crappy old content into stylish new clothes) it's time to plan for the future.
In this session, Karen will explain how Drupal is the future of adaptive content. She's not saying that like she's some kind of Drupal fangirl (though she is.) She's saying that as a long-time information architect, content strategist, and user experience designer, who sees content through the eyes of the people who create it and maintain it. She'll explain why—from her perspective—Drupal's content modeling tools and flexible UI make it a powerful tool in our fight against the future.

For years, we've been telling designers: the web is not print. You can't have pixel-perfect layouts. You can't determine how your site will look in every browser, on every platform, on every device. We taught designers to cede control, think in systems, embrace web standards. So why are we still letting content authors plan for where their content will "live" on a web page? Why do we give in when they demand a WYSIWYG text editor that works "just like Microsoft Word"? Worst of all, why do we waste time and money creating and recreating content instead of planning for content reuse? What worked for the desktop web simply won't work for mobile. As our design and development processes evolve, our content workflow has to keep up. Karen will talk about how we have to adapt to creating more flexible content.
The Arkansas Governor's Conference on Tourism, held March 6-8 in Little Rock, had an attendance of over 600 members of the Arkansas tourism industry. Hannah gave a presentation on the topic of "The Digital Media Landscape - Do you know what you're paying for?"

Did you know that 20% of US consumers access a social networking site via mobile phone? Or that text-messaging remains the most common mobile activity?

"We live in a world where the little things really do matter. Each encounter, no matter how brief, is a micro-interaction which makes a deposit or withdrawal from our rational and emotional subconscious. The sum of these interactions and encounters adds up to how we feel about a particular product, brand or service. Little things. Feelings. They influence our everyday behaviors more than we realize."

Today, it is virtually impossible to absorb all the content you’re interested in. There’s only so many hours in a day. And you probably still have to study or a job to do.
But then there’s smart algorithms which are constantly learning what we do and don’t like. At a certain point, they help us to make the optimal choice each and every time. They go by the names of Siri, Cortana or Google Now. And they will become the personal assistant everyone carries around.
Bad news for advertisers.
Because, how will advertisers ever get commercial content past all the smartness that has been put into the consumers’ hands?
And how will advertisers have to change in order to be successful?
Businesses everywhere are struggling to come to grips with social media but, generally speaking, they tend to treat it as a technology or a marketing issue. But when you really look at where social media is taking us it becomes clear that embracing social media successfully is primarily a cultural issue for the business.
Librarians across the country have collectively been spending resources on developing simple to complex makerspaces. But, what comes after that? This exciting presentation will talk about great ideas and programs you can use with your makerspaces. Topics include ways to build more community awareness about your library, create new startup companies within your library, and most importantly further define your library as the community anchor. This session will also encourage ways to build more coding programs to teach our future technical entrepreneurs how to build better and more integrated systems and encourage more innovation.
With Fashion Week to inspire us, this webinar focuses on sharing a few favorite digital trends for 2018. Instead of discussing denim separates and art-inspired prints, our team explores hot digital to keep an eye on. The webinar focuses on emerging technologies, exciting design trends and standout digital strategies to adopt in the new year.
Associate Creative Director Jessica DeJong and Chief Strategist Kalev Peekna dive into concepts that could disrupt how we think about digital experiences, as well as trends to easily fold into your 2018 marketing strategy.

Presentation given at the Digital Workplace Conference in Auckland, New Zealand on May 2nd, 2018 outlining the "secret sauce" in a successful marketing strategy, whether that of an organizational or an individual, and focusing on building a brand.
Presented at the Digital Workplace Conference Australia, held in Melbourne AU on August 15th and 16th, 2018. This presentation outlines the evolution that has happened in marketing, and the components that are necessary for successful brand building and digital marketing.
Slides from my talk at the Price Waterhouse Coopers Deals Exchange conference on April 26, 2018. I talk about algorithmically manage, internet-scale networks and how they are changing the very nature of the economy, the shape of companies, and the competencies that are required for 21st century success. There are many similar themes to other talks, but this is tailored to a business audience, and very specifically to one concerned with how to do M&A in an age of dominant platforms.
As an entrepreneur or small business owner, have you ever dreamed of marrying an accountant just so they can do the bookkeeping while you focus on growing your business? Instead, consider how a stack of mobile or desktop technology applications (apps) can help you spend less time on all those tasks small business owners have to manage.
On September 9th I was invited to guest speak to Jennifer Escales Advertising Class at Owen's Graduate School of Management.
We think this is the fourth time I've been invited to do this and I appreciate the repeat invitation. Thanks to the classes for being a great audience, for laughing at my jokes, and for waiting a week and a half for me to get the slides uploaded on slideshare.

There were many major developments in
social media in 2012, but perhaps the
biggest and most important change was
the shift into mobile. 46% of U.S. social
media users now access platforms via their mobile phone. This number is up almost one-quarter – compared to 2011.
Kate Gallagher has spent a quarter of her
life in interactive marketing and developed
Paramore's social media department. She
has written the strategies and implemented them for Tennessee, West Virginia, Ohio, CMT Viacom Networking, Chase Amazon Rewards Credit Card, Gatlinburg, the Wildwoods CVB, and many other destinations and attractions in addition to great national brands like CMT.
In her session she will be sharing her top
five best of the best social and mobile tips
and tricks you can use now

Mr. Personality: Using Personality Profiles to Make Your Company Better
Of course, no PU would be complete without professor of straight talk David Baker. For his session, we talked about personality profiles and why they matter. It was frank, hilarious discussion that edified and provoked.

BEST AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT – HONORABLE MENTION EllisLab’s Reactivation Campaign
Entrant: Kate Gallagher, Paramore | the digital agency
Audience: B2B
Why They Won:
This year's "gutsiest campaign" award goes to the marketers at EllisLab, who asked their entire database to opt-in for promotional messages (since the request had not been made at sign-up). Even though only 7% opted-in, and the team cut 93% of its database, we commend these marketers for the difficult decision they made to commit to building a strong, qualified list.

Web content: it's the meat in the sandwich, not the icing on the cake. Too often, organizations fail to deliver content that meets user needs and serves their business goals. Even during website redesigns, the editorial process gets short shrift in favor of building new features and creating new designs. Thinking about the content is always left until the last minute, always thought to be "somebody else's problem."

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

1. Debunking Mobile Myths
Josh Clark
That super distracted stereotype
who’s texting in one hand,
sending an email on his iPad
with the other, and balancing a
latte on top of his head while
driving doesn’t really exist. Yet
too often we design for these
mythical mobile users, creating
mobile apps and websites as
lite versions of their desktop
counterparts. Instead, mobile
apps should almost always
do MORE than their desktop
doppelgangers.
“Tapworthy” author Josh
Clark will grab his best tweed
jacket and join us at Paramore
University to explain the difficult
craft of designing simple
interfaces for complex mobile
apps, sharing techniques for
future-friendly mobile efforts
and, along the way, debunking
seven stubborn mobile myths.
Josh will also break down how,
when and where to use mobile
apps, why there’s no such thing
as the mobile web, and why
the future is about services, not
apps.

2. In-House Marketing Departments
David C Baker
David Baker will join us again
to share his observations on
what’s happening in in-house
marketing departments around
the world. Is the body count
rising or falling? If you work for
one of them, how do you build
respect through your company -
and how does this change what
you need from an agency or
development company?
David Baker is a Principal at
Recourses.com and, in our
experience, the most straight-
talking guy around. Want to
know what he thinks? Just
stand near him.
David is the author of 3 books,
an international speaker and
the smartest guy I know. His
work has been discussed
in the Wall Street Journal,
USA Today, Fast Company,
Inc., Forbes, CBS Business
Network, MarketingProfs, and
BusinessWeek. He also speaks
at places like Harvard and TedX.

3. Avoiding the Knowledge Coffin
Leslie Camacho
It’s time to stop burying all that
content you just spent weeks
on in the knowledge coffin that
is your CMS. We have to rethink
and redefine what “Content
Management System” means.
Is its purpose just to manage
your content? No. The truth is
that all major CMS systems are
proficient at managing content.
The real question is this: Can
your CMS bring life to customers
and the community at large?
Leslie Camacho, CEO of
EllisLab, will join us at PU to
look behind the code and reveal
what makes a CMS effective,
efficient, and right for your
business. No more dirt naps.
Let’s let our content live.
