Modern grammar uses the term ‘Word Class’in place of
‘Parts of Speech'. Word classes can be further divided
into two classes:
• Open Word Class
• Close Word Class
6. OPEN WORD CLASS
• OPEN WORD CLASS can change by the time as they acquire new
members constantly or we can say that new words can be added to
this class as the need arises. Followings are the members of the
Open Word Class:
• Noun Naming words
• Adjectives Modifies Noun and Pronoun
• Verb Shows action
• Adverb Modifies Verbs and Adjectives
7. CLOSE WORD CLASS
• On the other hand, we never invent new prepositions, determiners, or
conjunctions. These classes include words like of, the, and but. They are
called CLOSED word classes because they are made up of finite sets of
words which are never expanded. Followings are the members of the Closed
Word Class:
• Determiner Specifies, identifies, or quantifies the noun
• Pronoun Replaces a Noun
• Preposition Connects a noun or pronoun
• Conjunction joins words, clauses, phrases
• Interjection Expresses a strong emotions
