BA (H) GEOGRAPHY

University of Delhi
INTRODUCTION
Field work is one of the unique attributes of Geography. As a
subject concerned with the study of phenomena in relation to
the physical environment, it is mostly limited to the
classrooms only ultimately failing to make it more realistic,
meaningful and intellectually challenging. This is where the
role of field work is emphasized the most.
Geographers regard fieldwork as a vital instrument for
understanding our world through direct experience, for
gathering basic data about this world, and as a fundamental
method for enacting geographical education.
It allow students to gather their own (primary) data, provide
opportunities to extend classroom learning through direct
observation and experience, and allow for scientific research
through field experiments.
It involves the process of observing and collecting data about
people, cultures, and natural environments. It is important in
both the social and natural sciences. Social sciences, such
as economics or history, focus on people, culture,
INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH THROUGH FIELD WORK
RESEARCH is the systematic
investigation into a subject.
Field Work backs up the
research, it validates the
nature, data and conclusion
of the research. These two
go hand in hand.
The topics concerned here
are general initiatives taken
by the government for the
welfare of the public. And
hence these can only be
mapped through public
polls.
Field work is the only
alternative left
eliminating the option
of internet polls which
is not viable
considering the study
area.
Research work done in this
field work were to know the
nature of the Policies,
implementation, and to
effectuality of the schemes
some places near the NCR
which would contrast the
situation from the mega city.
Consideration certain parameters
like sampling method, method of
data collection, techniques, data
analysis; the most important
being the execution of the plans
was important.
STUDY AREA
HIMACHAL PRADESH is famous for its natural beauty, hill stations, and temples. It has has been ranked fifteenth in the list of the highest per
capita incomes of Indian states and union territories for year 2013-14. The state has several valleys, and more than 90% of the population
lives in rural areas.
PUNJAB is the only Sikh majority state in India with Sikhs being 57.69% of the population. Agriculture is the largest industry in Punjab.
Khajjiar is a small but immensely
beautiful hill station in the Chamba
district of Himachal Pradesh State.
Khajjiar is also known as the
‘Gulmarg of Himachal Pradesh’ and
‘Mini Switzerland’ worldwide.
It is among the most agriculturally
productive cities of India, Amritsar has
a total population of around 1,000,000.
Being the administrative headquarter
of the district, it is well connected with
most of the important cities of north
India through air, rail and road
ways. The city is a dazzling showcase of
composite culture and secular
heritage.
Named after its founder Lord Dalhousie, the British Governor-
General in India, it is a tourist attraction with several Victorian-style
mansions, Scottish architecture and other charming colonial
buildings. It’s also famous for having a rare combination of 3
ecosystems all together– pasture along with lake and forest
The physiography of Dalhousie is blessed with
beautiful tourist spots. The town is spread
over 14 sq.km of area sited on the western
edge of the Dhauladhar range. The
population is roughly around 10,500
characterised by diligent and simplistic living.
OBJECTIVES
The aim of field survey is to collect ground base information and to observe the practical
implementations of the theoretical conclusions.
To know about the condition of people and whether the various policies implemented by
the government were reaching to them or not
This enhanced their knowledge and helped them to understand the condition of the
people not in their traditional classrooms, rather in the natural environment by interacting
with the locals.
The major objective of this work was to understand the effectuality and implementation of
the policies introduced by the government in the rural landscape of Khajjiar and Dalhousie
and the cityscape of Amritsar. The changing cultural realm with the changing physical
condition was a bonus.
To enquire about the living conditions, occupation, adversities encountered by the people
and the intervention of authorities.
To know how much the people are aware of the policies being made for their welfare?
What type of efforts they made for being updated with the world?
The government
promises a lot, but
whether it reaches the
small marginal
sections of the society,
this was the question
which rose in every
students mind and in
the search of these
answers the survey
was conducted.

  • 3. INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH THROUGH FIELD WORK RESEARCH is the systematic investigation into a subject. Field Work backs up the research, it validates the nature, data and conclusion of the research. These two go hand in hand. The topics concerned here are general initiatives taken by the government for the welfare of the public. And hence these can only be mapped through public polls. Field work is the only alternative left eliminating the option of internet polls which is not viable considering the study area. Research work done in this field work were to know the nature of the Policies, implementation, and to effectuality of the schemes some places near the NCR which would contrast the situation from the mega city. • 5. OBJECTIVES The aim of field survey is to collect ground base information and to observe the practical implementations of the theoretical conclusions. To know about the condition of people and whether the various policies implemented by the government were reaching to them or not This enhanced their knowledge and helped them to understand the condition of the people not in their traditional classrooms, rather in the natural environment by interacting with the locals. The major objective of this work was to understand the effectuality and implementation of the policies introduced by the government in the rural landscape of Khajjiar and Dalhousie and the cityscape of Amritsar. The changing cultural realm with the changing physical condition was a bonus. To enquire about the living conditions, occupation, adversities encountered by the people and the intervention of authorities. To know how much the people are aware of the policies being made for their welfare? What type of efforts they made for being updated with the world? The government promises a lot, but whether it reaches the small marginal sections of the society, this was the question which rose in every students mind and in the search of these answers the survey was conducted.
