To explain what Library portal is and
its usefulness to the students through
identifying resources and services of
Jayakar Library portal.
To study in detail Jayakar Library

4. Research Methodology:
◦ Descriptive method

Scope:
◦ The scope of the study is limited to the study
of University of Pune, “Jayakar Library Portal”.
Researcher studied Jaykar Library portal by
observing the portal content available on web
during May 2013 to June 2014.
5. Literature Review:
Researcher reviewed literature on Portal
Technnology and pointed out few authors’
contribution to widen the library portal
concept in education sector.
◦ Lakos, Amos A. (2004) has highlighted the
importance of library portal
◦ Letha (2006) highlighted the role of a library
portal for various user services.
◦ Murray (2002) he has discussed the benefits a
library portal to an institution.
◦ Cox (2003) he listed the portal benefits and
considered related issues.
◦ Brown (2000) has conducted a research and
explained the need of university portal.
6. What is a Portal?
The “portal” is an entry point to a world
of resources
Portal translates to “gate”.
According to Looney and Lyman 2000.
“ A variety of useful information into a
single, ‘one-stop’ web-page, helping
the user to avoid being overwhelmed
by ‘Infoglut’ or feeling lost on the web”
7. What is a Library Portal?
“A library portal is site where the electronic
information and services available to an
individual members of academicians,
researchers and any other member which are
presented in an accessible, secure,
personalized, customizable and integrated
form.
Commonly referred to as simply a portal, it is
a website that offers access to a broad array
of resources and services of libraries such as
e-journals, online databases, Web OPAC,
new additions and any other static
information about library services”.

Jayakar Library is library of University
of Pune
Established in January 1950, named
in honor of the first Vice- chancellor
Dr. M. R. Jayakar.

16. Findings and Suggestions:
Jayakar Portal’s simple structure helps users to browse
various e-resources on portal.
To encourage more visits to the portal, more links of
interests need to be created and highlighted on
university website and on Jayakar library homepage.
Jaykar library portal should include more number of free
e-resources, e-journals, e-class notes, Educational
videos which will be beneficial to engage more no of
user on library Portal.
Jaykar library portal need to increase national union
catalogues of theses.
Jayakar library portal does not support personalization
to a large extent and does not support users to create
their own personal view on portal.
Jaykar Library portal can enhance services through
adding collaborative tools like chat rooms, RSS etc.
17. Conclusion:
Student’s access to quality learning
Library portal helps them to learn new
things easily.
Learning through Library portal is like a
water or electricity that flows in a network
or a grip, which we tap into when we
want. It is act as an Opening Doors to
Education Worldwide.
