2. Melputhur Narayana Bhattathiri
Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri
Melputhur Narayana Bhattatiri (AD 1559-
1632)was the greatest legendary among the
Guruvayur saints.
father was Mathrudattan, a pandit himself.
He was the disciple of great scholar Achuta
Pisharati.
He was from Melputhur Illam, Tirur, on the north
banks of Bharathapuzha
3. Teachers of Bhattathiri
Bhattathiri studied from his father as a child. He
learned the Rig Veda from Madhava, Tharkasastra
(science of arguments in Sanskrit)
from Damodara and Vyakarana (Sanskrit grammar)
from AchyutaPisharati.He became a pandit by the
age of sixteen. He was a member of Madhava of
Sangamagrama's Kerala school of astronomy and
mathematics. He was one of the last mathematicians
of the Sangamagramaschool, which had been
founded by Madhava in Kerala,
4. Narayana Bhattathiri
Narayana Bhattathiri was born in 1560 AD and
mastered the scriptures at the age of 16. However, he
was not very devoted at that age.
Once when he was rebuked by his Guru Achutha
Pisharodi, he became very repentant and devoted to
his Guru.
After this he decided to surrender himself at the feet
of Lord Krishna in the temple of Guruvayur, and
seek His Grace.

6. Narayaneeyam
Narayaniyam is a literary and devotional Sanskrit work
was written by Bhattathiri in 1586 AD.
Narayaneeyam which name selected by Bhattathiri
because of the base of subject and the name of author,
both are Narayana.
Narayaneeyam is in praise of Lord Narayana (Vishnu) on
the equation between Nara and Narayana.
This works contains 100 dasakas more or less 10 slokas
(consisting of 1036 verses (slokas)
This work highly influenced with Bhagavata of Vyasa
He quoted the various names of Vishnu in each sloka.
7. Prakriyasarvasva
Among the sastra works of NarayanaBhatta,
Prakriyasarvasva has a unique role in the field of
Vyakarana.
The twenty sections of the text explain and illustrate the
sutras of Panini and the auxiliaries.
The prakriyasarvaswa is a comprehensive treatise on
practical Sanskrit grammar explaining and illustrating
the entire bulk of the sutras in paninisastadhyayi
Its essential ancillaries like the varthikas, paribhasas,
ganapata, dhatupatha and unadi rearranged in specific
sections on a pattern more or less similar to that of
prakiyakoumudy and siddhnathakoumudhy.
8. Manameyodaya
Being a scholar of MimamsaSchool of philosophy the
author establishes the main principles of Indian
philosophies by this book.
The main text contains two parts with Mana and
meya.
The name indicated the content. The Mana portion
of this text contains Pramanas- means of right
knowledge according to Indian system of
philosophy.Meya are Prameyas - the object of valid
knowledge.
9. Apaniniyapramanyasadhanam
This is small work, which has an important place in
the study of practical Sanskrit grammar.
By this work the author tries to establish the
importance of other grammar school to Sanskrit
grammar.
According to other schools of Sanskrit grammar the
prayogas justified by him.
10. Dhatukavya
Dhatukavyais also another important work of
MelputturBhattathiri.
It is famous Sastrakavya of Sanskrit literature.
It is a book with illustrations of dhatus like
Vasudevavijaya of Vasudeva.
The kavya has three cantos. Kamsavadha- a Puranic
theme used to illustrate the grammar points.
11. Grhyasutra
The work grhyasutra also a famous work of
Narayanabhatta, on the subject of domestic rituals.
The work dealing with the domestic rituals of
Nampoothiri families following AsvalayanaGrhya
sutra.
In the opinion of many scholars, he wrote this
subject with his father matrudatta.
12. Guruvayupuresa stava
This is also a strotrakavya of SreeGuruvayoorappan,
the temple diety of Guruvayur.
The poet wrote this kavya only with twelve verses.
13. Sripadasaptati
It is another short strotrakavya written by
NarayanaBhatta, praising the goddess of mukkola
temple near Changaramkulam a village in
malappuram district of Kerala.
The work contains with 71 verses by
Sardulavikrititametre illustrating the goddess.
The poet himself narrate the goddess with her place
named Mukthisthala, now a day’s famous as
Mookkuthala.
14. Other works
Bhattaththiri has written many essays in Sanskrit
Subhadraharanam is the foremost in these series.
The other essays are Rajasuyam, Dutavakyam,
Nalayanicaritam, Pancaliswayamvaram, Kiratham,
Kailasavarnanam, Sundopasundakyanam etc…
He has also written many strotras like
Guruvayupuresastrotram, sreepadasapthathi etc…
His Ramayana prabhandam,mahabharatamcampu
are also notable works.
